On Sunday last, Ennis Anglers fished a competition out of Greenfields on Lough Corrib. A total of 16 anglers participated in the event catching 8 trout. Results were as follows:
- 1st Basil Sheilds with 3 trout for 5.6 lbs.
- 2nd Brian McInerney with 2 trout for 4.6 lbs.
- 3rd Christy Scanlon with 1 trout 1.14 lbs.
On Saturday & Sunday last, Oughterard Regatta hosted their team competition out of Baurisheen Bay. Top Rods were Harold O’Toole & John Reidy, both Galway, with 11 trout over the two days with a weight of 9.98 kg. Second place went to local duo Kevin Molloy & Mike Faherty also with 11 trout with a weight of 9.30 kg. Third place went to Moycullen angler Mike Keady & Cornamona angler Tom Doc Sullivan with 6 fish for 6.15kg. Thirty-eight anglers participated in the event which saw a total catch of 74 fish.
Staying in the Oughterard area, Basil Sheilds of Ardnasillagh Lodge reported excellent Duckfly fishing in the area. On Wednesday last, Peter Boyle caught and released four trout, best fish at 3.5 lbs., while Robert Crichton, Cork, had four trout for his day’s fishing. Visiting Scottish angler, John Jacks, and Larry Kelly, Dublin, enjoyed an excellent week’s fishing, catching a total of 24 trout with all fish released and with two fish over 4 lbs. and two more over 5 lbs. Belfast anglers, Mark Patterson & John Malcom, had great sport boating 11 trout for two days with all fish sportingly released. On Saturday last Basil was guiding an angler from the UK who experienced a red letter day catching 9 trout for an estimated 28.5 lbs. Regular Lough Corrib visitor, Glen O Connell, had three trout for his days fishing estimated at 6 lbs.
Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge, Glencorrib also reported a fantastic start of the new season with 61 fish being recorded since March 20th. On March 21st, one of Larry’s regular visitors had 12 trout including two over 5 lbs. Only ten days later he caught a whopper of 6 lbs. which was returned after a quick photo. To make things perfect, Larry added another six pounder to his 2016 catch list while fishing with visiting angler, Malcom Patrick.
Duckfly hatches have started to slow down in some areas but as they do, Olives are starting to appear which should provide good opportunities for the coming weeks.
