On Sunday 11th June Naas and District Anglers held a summer knock up match on Gills pond in Ballinakill. Eddie Long reports…

We drew our pegs at 9:30 and began setting up for what we’d hoped would be a bagging session. Weather wise, the day started out quite sunny but there was a very strong wind blowing across the lake. This wind was definitely going to make fishing very difficult for those of us unlucky enough to draw a peg on the right side of the lake from Pegs 15 and upwards.

Just before the all in there was a bit of a downpour and as luck would have it I’d left my boots at home. I had the best Goretex money could buy but alas it was channelling the rain water straight down into my runners, boo hoo.

I fished a swim at 10m to my left by the lillies with a green swim stim groundbait. To my right I fished a red mix with sensas tanches at 8.5m . I also had a chuck of the method feeder at 35 turns into the centre of the lake and another closer in at 20 turns hoping for an auld lump of a carp. It wasn’t to be on the method as all I hooked were weeds. I spent most of my match fishing my left hand line and it produced a few fish, some puppy trench and one 2lb’r tench which felt like a proper beast on my 12s elastic. Presentation of the bait was practically impossible with the wind constantly blowing the pole left and right and most on my side of the lake were struggling badly. The other side seemed to be much calmer with the wind on their backs and there did appear to be more fish being caught there but not by all.

Bright at times and very windy but some nice fish caught

I had to leave the match a half hour early because I had to go to work so I packed away my gear and left my keepnet behind to be weighed in. I didn’t mind leaving early too much as I hadn’t had a fish for over an hour and it began to rain again so…

Ballinakill is a beautiful lake stuffed with lovely fish but conditions were against us and she just didn’t produce the goods on the day, oh well!

A massive well done to Trev Campbell on his results, he’s on fire at the moment  and also to the runners up. It was a very tough and very close winter league that went right down to the wire.

A massive thank you to Norman Rothwell and the Ballinakill A.C. for letting us fish your fantastic lake. I tell ya we’d kill to have such a wonderful venue to call our own but we’ll have to wait till one of our members wins the Euromillions.
