South Shore Sea angling Club reports on their first competition of the year, fished at South Arklow Beach…
22 January: What a miserable morning with constant rain… the stuff that gets you really wet but we are a hardy bunch and our spirits were not easily dampened .
30 of the country’s finest anglers assembled in the car park armed with top class bait and the best of fishing tackle to do battle over the next five hours.
High attendance was expected and we were not disappointed, although there was a number of top anglers missing because of digging duties for the Winter Festival.
We had in attendance a lovely lass Emma without a “G”… from the Marine Institute who was tagging codling. She put in a hard shift getting her ear chewed off at every peg by inquisitive anglers.
Well done Emma!
As expected there was loads of pin whiting from the off. Getting one over the size limit of 18cm was another story – “bloody frustrating”.
Score cards were quickly filled with the allowed undersized fish and the hard bit of finding a run of bigger fish started.
With the onset of darkness and the rain stopping hopes were high of a few lucky dogs appearing … “not a chance “
There were bags of Whiting , Dabs , rockling and Flounder and with the two zones being introduced this year it would be interesting which end would fish best. As it happens it was fairly even as can be seen from the results.
Well done Jim O brien on winning the competition. Your skill at picking out the bigger fish is something to behold.
As reported earlier in the week our cleaning of the beach worked a treat with the plastic bag passed along and all rubbish binned. All anglers had buckets with water to help fish recover and get dispatched back to their watery home.
Well done lads !!!!!
