Dan O’Neill at the Mount Juliet Estate reports on the trout fishing on the Nore…
With the water running slightly higher this week some of the trout runs are fishing slightly bette. My two fisherladies this week were Klara and Linda. Both were new to fishing although after 30 minutes you wouldn’t have thought so. After teaching both ladies the basics they picked their spots along the run at Georges Wall Klara fished the head of the pool while Linda fished the tail end. The water has most definitely cooled down (and quite substantially too) over the past week.

At the head of the pool with some fish starting to show their presence on the opposite side of the main run. We started with an elk haired sedge. Showing Klara the general line to fish she landed the fly beautifully on the water. Feeling confident that Klara was OK and in with a good chance I walked down stream to Linda and went through some of the lines for her to fish Linda also landed the fly nicely on the water (another deer haired sedge). Spotting some rising trout nearby caused a very serious look of concentration on her face. Then all of a sudden we heard a commotion coming from the head of the pool which of course was Klara. The words “It’s my first fish” echoed in the woods in front of us.
As anyone who takes someone fishing will know, it feels like someone has lifted a ton of blocks off your shoulders as you see the sheer delight and excitement on the person’s face when they catch a fish. As all this excitement was going on I had made my way to Klara to help her unhook her first fish. A beautiful brown trout was the prize. After a quick look at the fish and an explanation of what it was he was released back into the river.
We fished the run for another few minutes before heading to the middle of the stream and tried the slightly deeper water. Klara made one of those casts where you just think “that’s worth a fish”. It sailed down the run and all of a sudden the line went tight and the rod dipped over. Lifting into the fish it was quite clear this was a better one. Talking Klara through the fighting of a better fish, the fish did all the usual tricks with an acrobatic jump out of the water and a run downstream. With the fish now tiring we were in close quarters which is the most dangerous area. Just as the fish turned on his side and glided towards us he flicked his head and threw the hook! We did get a good look at the fish thankfully, a beautiful brown trout that has now adopted the name “Harold”. So all in all a great outing with two very keen young ladie that no doubt I’m sure will be seen on the banks of the river or indeed in it in the very near future.
