Lady Gwen and Clare Dragoon are both back on the water now off the Clare coast and the fishing looks like it was worth waiting for…

Luke Aston’s Clare Dragoon was back in action on 13 June. They had a lovely day on the sea. Starting out there were plentt of mackerel off Loop Head and they enjoyed a very steady drift of fish on mixed ground. Apart from the usual suspects in the deeper spots they picked up a ballan wrasse in 75 m on stones. Most information on the species says they don’t go deeper than 40m! Some nice little Ling were taking as well and that was just on feathers.

Cod and wrasse
The cod you’d expect, the ballan wrasse was a little out of his depth

The action picked up yesterday, another lovely calm day on the sea. Once again there were plenty of big mackerel at Loop Head and a nice mix of whitefish just a couple of miles out.

Luke prepped his anglers for the boat’s first go at the tope this year and they had 6 in the Clare Dragoon in just over an hour. And plenty dropped runs. So a good sign of them about. Luke says he has plenty of availability in the coming weeks and the odd weekend date still left.

Meanwhile Sean Aston was out and about on Lady Gwen II. Since getting back on the water his anglers have really been enjoying the fruits of the Clare coast. They’ve been getting a lot of species. Among the catches were some fantastic cod, pollack and coalfish. We finished a little early as everyone had caught enough fish. Thundery weather slowed things down at times but dramatic skyscapes and scenery helped make up for that.

Sean tells us that the Lady Gwen II has large deck space, so social distancing is very comfortable for groups of 6.

Go fishing…
