Kit Dunne reports on a sharking trip out over the Celtic Deeps…
13 September: Congratulations to Shane Devine on his fine Specimen Blue Shark, 107lb calculated weight. After an epic battle, his Father Conor assisted with boating the fish, measured photographed and returned fit and well.
All in all a day of quality not quantity with one Porgie to the side as well. Dolphins, Guillemots and Fulmars kept us amused on a slow drift.
Reports of many tuna in the area had us excited but we had NO sightings. For a long day it went too quick, great company with these guys and an old angling bud John Mcloughlin.
East coast round up
SHARK fishing out of Kilmore Quay has been sporadic this year, with more days cancelled than fished its been hard to get a run at it. We’ve had from 10 Sharks a day to zero, however, the quality has been very good with a few Blues well over 100lb and many in the 90’s. Porbeagles are generally in the 60-80lb bracket, small yet aggressive fighting fish. Kian Ryan got his first blue Wednesday at 85lb calculated weight, Paddy Keogh got another, or possibly the same one an hour later.
The bottom fishing has produced Haddock, Gurnard Whiting, Ray, Spurdog and a lone Hake.
WRECK fishing out of Wicklow has been very productive, we set out to investigate these areas and found them to be well worth the 20Nm steam. The highlight was a 12lb Pollock for Jerry Dixon, our first Irish Specimen Pollock. Many Pollock were taken between 8 and 10lb, a few Cod between 4 and 8lb and a few small Coaly.
Next on the agenda is to target the Porbeagles on these wrecks.
TOPE fishing is very good at the moment with a few pack and young tope still about, the big females are inshore also. A fine Specimen of 161cm long was taken by Nathan Condell in an evening session on Thursday just 20 mins from the Harbour.
SMOOTH-HOUNDS are still about IF YOU CAN GET CRAB. The Marks South of Wicklow Head produced numerous Hounds with a 104cm specimen 2 weeks ago for Lee Greene. The same areas have recently produced small tope and about 30 good BullHuss on one trip.
Shark fishing will continue for another 3 weeks weather-permitting, Wreck fishing will continue throughout Autumn / Winter. Tope should keep producing some big ones into October when we then target Spurdog for the Winter Season.
