Salmon fishing picks up on Munster Blackwater after rains

August is notorious as being a “sulky” month for Salmon angling, with many Salmon browning up. However, with the heavy rainand rising river levels late last week salmon angling has taken off again upstream of Fermoy in the Killavullen & Mallow areas.

Jason Corcoran tells us they had some fantastic fishing at Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery on August 10th. There were salmon showing on all beats with a total of 13 fish hooked and 7 making it to the net. Some of the anglers getting fish to the bank were Michael Dooley, Stanko, Morrie but the top angler of the day goes to Kenny Walsh with a fantastic fish of 23.5lbs on the fly. All fish were released to continue on their precious journey.

At Fortwilliam it was a similar story and Michàel Keneally had a great day out guided by Chris Coady on the Glenmore beat. John Paul Williamson landed 3 fish best of 9lbs  off the Bishops beat and Ian Carter landed 2 fish off the Ellis beat. Once again, all beats fished.

Glenda Powel also reports great fishing on the Blackwater Salmon Fishery and thre were more salmon caught and released yesterday. With all the fish about and the water, it’s no surprise that rods on the fishery are being snapped up. But it’s well worth enquiring to see whats available…

Marcin Kantor put together this video of a great day on the river late last season. On the day he managed to hook 8 salmon on the fly while landing most of them. Really gets across the excitment of salmon fishing. You can follow his fishing adventures here: Marcin Kantor – Offbeat Angling

Finally, Eileen Carroll Murphy in the Macroom office tells us that some excellent Sea Trout are being caught in the waters between the mouth of the Araglin River near Kilworth, Co. Cork and Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, however very few anglers are targeting this species

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
