Dan O’Neill, fishery manager at Mount Juliet is back again with more news from the Nore…
With the water levels now low and water temps staying warmer for longer during the day a trip with dry dropper was the obvious choice. Accompanying me today was a friend of mine Alan who shares as much passion as I do for fly fishing.
The beat of choice was at the top end of the fishery which only becomes fishable when the water runs below .40. The Klink pattern we decided to use was one given to me by a fellow angler – very simple but effective. Below the Klink we were using a iron blue nymph with a small bit of flash behind the 2mm bead.
Selecting our position in the beat we began fishing. It wasn’t very long before Alan lifted into the first trout of the day which was followed by many more. We were very careful and precise on where we fished in the run and found the fish to be tight to the top of each run taking the nymph on the drop at times.
It was a pleasure to watch Alan fish the runs and even better was watching him play out the trout in such beautiful scenery.
We are in need of rain at the moment on the Nore as water levels are quite low now. Fish are still quite energetic and in amazing conditionand it always amazes me how each trout has such unique markings.
