The Department of Rural and Community Development, is currently taking applications under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS). This initiative provides funding for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure. It also provides support for the necessary repair, maintenance, enhancement or promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure in rural areas across Ireland.

The focus of ORIS is to support outdoor recreational infrastructure in countryside areas across Ireland that not only provide an outlet for the communities in which they are situated, but that also deliver added value from a tourism perspective.

The scheme supports outdoor recreation activities such as angling, walking, trekking, cycling, kayaking and hiking. It helps to make use of the resources of the countryside that contribute to healthy active lifestyles, supporting the economic and tourism potential of rural areas for both local communities and tourist visitors alike.
