13 August 2023: What a fantastic weekend! Cork Sea Angling Club had their two day Kerry Perpetual Fishing competition – sponsored by The Angling Hub – Ireland – this weekend in Fenit, Co Kerry.
There were 13 Anglers at the check in was at the Spa on Saturday at 11am followed by fishing from 12:00 to 17:00.
The weather was hard. The wind was blowning a gale and as fast as the whistle blew we were into fish. Last year’s winner was Mark Gargan and he was fighting to keep the trophy and was doing a great job of that with a 76cm undulate ray, a beauty, early on.
That was soon beaten by Alan O’Dowling with a another fantastic fish; a 79cm undulate ray. Alan kept his winning position up to the last hour. Then James Raymond’s rod on peg 13 buckled over and his reel screamed. Every head on the beach had their eyes locked on peg 13. It wasn’t long when he brought in a fine 105cm stingray. Absolutely brilliant , well done James.
At the end there were 16 thornback ray, 13 painted ray, 7 undulate ray and 3 stingray, (all the rays), 3 dogfish, flounder, gurnard, bass and an eel. It was fantastic fishing from all 13 anglers.
First place was James Raymond, second was Alan Dowling third was Noel Cashman and in fourth place Mark Gargan, well done lads. But that was just day one…
Day two was a 4 hour species hunt competition on Fenit pier, and after a fantastic breakfast in the West End Hotel Fenit we started day 2 fishing from 10:00 to 14:00. Rules were simple: most species wins. And what a surprise, with two hours to go Noel Cashman brings in a 79 cm stingray and an hour later it was Mark Gargan with a 94cm stingray. It was surreal, but the most species on the day were caught by Alan Dowling taking first place second year running with 7 species and Donal Domeney with 5 species taking second.
