Scientific monitoring has been carried out weekly at St Mullins since April under IFI’s EU Habitat Directive Species Monitoring Programme.

There have been mixed shad angling reports so far this year. The average size of shad caught initially were quite small with some larger specimen-sized fish caught last weekend. Angling catch also provides a useful barometer of shad numbers and sizes.

Shad must always be treated with the utmost care and respect when angling for them.

All shad angling is Catch and Release and minimal handling is always encouraged.

This year as a guide for anglers a Shad Leaflet – Shad Consevation and Handling has been published and is being distributed to anglers in St Mullins.
