Paddy Dunworth at Celtic Angling has been busy with clients over the last week. Bridget Mooney and family from Indiana treat her three sons, Casey, Eamon and Griffin, to a day’s fly fishing on the Maigue. A strong upstream wind made fishing difficult, but each now has a good grasp of casting into a wind, along with the fundamentals of fly-casting. The highlight of the session was the grilse which splashed its way up a shallow run with only the dorsal fin showing as it thrashed through the 4″ shallow fast water just below the bridge at Adare.

Ben Bartlett, Bob Joseph and Nick Joseph from Idaho were also out with Paddy. They only had time for an afternoon session. Conditions were tough with vigorous weed growth and lower and lower water levels as the dry spells continued. They had some plucks, but daytime fly-fishing is trying this time of year. Trout are no fans of bright sunlight, and they tend to wait until the evening rise and the juicy sedge-pupae, fine dining indeed.

Finally, Matt and Liam O’Neill travelled all the way from Hong Kong to fish the Maigue. Although Liam at 9 is younger than Paddy normally caters for, Paddy needn’t have worried and the youngster quickly got to grips with the river banks, water, casting and even the catching!

All fish were safely released.
Go fishing…
