Tough Dangling at Daingean for Frank Holding Memorial

This post was compiled from angling reports shared on the Edenderry Coarse Angling Club Facebook page:

A

fantastic turnout of 66 anglers lined the banks of the Grand Canal in Daingean for the annual Frank Holding Memorial Match. This year marked the 10th anniversary of Frankโ€™s passing, and it was great to see so many anglers come together to honour his memory.

Conditions looked promising, with good water levels, plenty of colour, and lots of fish-holding features. However, despite signs of fish activity throughout the section, the fish proved reluctant to feed, making for a challenging dayโ€™s fishing.

Catches consisted mainly of small roach, rudd, and perch, with the occasional bonus tench and skimmer. To round off the day, anglers were treated to torrential rain during the weigh-in, making the collection of results a challenge in itself!

Tough fishing aside, the event was another fitting tribute to Frank and a great gathering of anglers from across the region.

Overall results as follows:
1st Overall – Nicky Harrison – 5lb 6oz
2nd Overall – Bob Hulme – 5lb 4oz
3rd Overall – Stuart Greene – 4lb 10oz

Fishing off to a Flyer at Edenderry Festival

The Edenderry Festival is in full swing this week as anglers from far and wide compete in what is one of Ireland’s premier canal matches. The festival format combines a 3 Day event and a 2 Day event, and things kicked off last Sunday with a preliminary competition, but it was Monday when things really got going, with the first day of the 3 Day competition. Overcast skies and a bit of a breeze made for near perfect conditions, and the fish were the icing on the cake, as they were present in good numbers and feeding well. The resukt was fantastic weights off all sections.

PikeSeeker recommends tench tactics

Arturย PikeSeekerย reports on a recent tench fishing trip where he catches some really nice fishโ€ฆ

The end of May to the beginning of August is a good time to put away the spinning rod and grab some feeder tackle. During this period, the tench start feeding, and you can catch some truly beautiful specimens.

I love catching tench because they’re beautiful and very brave. Sometimes the fight lasts several minutes before the tench finds its way into the landing net. The feeder method works fantastically.

Here are a few tench from my recent trip to one of the lakes in Co. Cavan. Beautiful surroundings and truly beautiful fish. I recommend it to everyone!

32 Species Caught in Dunmore East Small Boats Festival

Barry Murphy reports from Dunmore East on a successful Small Boats Festival…

After an unsuccessful year in 2025 the Dunmore East Small Boats Festival was back and with help from sponsors there was a large prize pool to fish for. As with all boating activities the small boats have been a victim of the weather on more than one occasion in recent years. We would like to thanks all the anglers for bearing with us at times, fortunately, this year the forecasters were on our side and from a week out the weather looked good on the weekend. We were just lucky to get the weather window for the weekend.

Friday was rougher than forecasted, thanks have to go to the Kilmore boats Shamrock Tackle and Fin Chaser who made the journey up in not ideal conditions.
An early start Saturday morning for the committee to assess the weather and get registration set up, it was clear the weather was not going to be as good as predicted earlier in the week. Due to safety concerns a restriction was enforced for day 1. The restrictions were Hook Head the most southern point on the Wexford side of the estuary and the Shannon Head at Dunmore East on the Waterford side of the estuary and everything north of them two points.
Boats left the harbour at 8 am and had until 6 pm to try adding as many species as possible.

Personally, on Team Rinnashark we found the fishing tough, we added a few species, but
numbers of fish were low ending the day with 11 species. Leading the way on day one was Shamrock Tackle with an impressive 14 species, shows what the estuary has to offer. 2nd on 11 was team Rinnashark and 3rd with 10 was Finn chaser.

Day two and the forecast was better; the actual winds were higher than forecasted so the initial review by the committee was to restrict from the fall skirts rock to hook and review after two hours. Thankfully the winds dropped and the sea flattened and at 1030am the call to go outside was given. Great to see some mackerel were caught letโ€™s hope the numbers increase over the coming weeks. Boats were scrambling and moving from mark to mark to add to there tally from day 1. Reef and rock marks south of the hook as well as the clean ground marks around Tramore Bay.

Some fine fish were caught to name a few a nice Bass for Dave Godwin on Shamrock Tackle, a nice 90cm Hound for John Dunphy on Nicole N Will, a good pollock of 59cm for AVA and a nice 106cm Bull Huss for Alex Murphy on Nicole N Will.

Over the weekend 32 different species were landed between all the boats to show whatโ€™s on offer in the area. Fin Chaser and Here Fishy Fishy did well adding another 11 on day 2 but another steady performance adding 8 on day 2 to come to a total of 22 from Shamrock Tackle saw them get their hands on the trophy again, well done lads super performance! Second place with 21 was Fin Chaser and 3rd was Here Fishy Fishy. The biggest combined Huss\ hound fell to Nicole N Will, biggest Bass and flat to Shamrock Tackle, biggest Pollock was caught by team Ava and the biggest ling was by Fin Chaser.

The weekend ended with prizegiving in the Haven Hotel where food and pints made the fish grow as the night went on; a great night was had by all. The committee hope everyone had a great weekend and thanks all the anglers and lastly the most important the sponsors without them this would not be possible.

Plenty of visitors from far & wide enjoy a cast with Celtic Angling

Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling has been busy guiding in the Limerick area over the past week or so. During that time, he has welcomed guests from Essex in the UK, as well as Missouri, Colorado and California in the USA. Some were newcomers to the sport, while others were experienced anglers, and all tried their hand at fly fishing on the River Maigue. Breezy conditions made things tricky, but they all managed to get a trout or two, and will no doubt bring back plenty of memories when they return to their home waters.

Tench Tempted by Artem’s Custom Made Lures

Innovative lure maker and angler Artem Novikov of Makeshiftlures was in touch to tell us of his pursuit of tench with custom-designed homemade lures:

My theory was that tench eat natural food sources such as caddis, mayfly, damsels, dragonfly and other nymphs. So if I make a lure small enough and buggy looking so it can imitate a nymph but nothing in particular, then tench surely will take a bite at it.

I came up with a pattern that has rubber legs, dubbing on the body two hen pheasant feathers at the front and more rubber legs. Colour of the lure is olive, as it seems to be the most common colour of the nymphs.

Arrived at the lake before sunrise and cleared the spot with a rake and fed it with my usual mix of Weetabix, digestive biscuits and bread. The feed was only needed to attract tench to the spot, and once they are there, to be casting around with a tench lure in hopes of a bite.

I would cast to the far end of the clear spot, let the lure sink and retrieve it very slowly with pauses letting it sink each time to the bottom. Bites would come suddenly usually when I least expect it. When the lure would sink to the bottom and I would start ro real it in again usually Tench already have taken it and I would feel first heavy fish at the end of the line and when tench knows he is hooked then the runs pulls and head shakes would come.

It’s great fun to be catching tench on a light spinning rod and a small lure. It is definitely an unusual way of catching them for me.

I fished all day from the morning to about 8pm. Managed to catch 5 fish all in around 45cm to 48cm”

Secret specimen lake for wild tench & bream

Not content with fishing the usual haunts, Alin Dragan likes to beat his own path to the water, searching for unfished swims that hold their own secrets. In the latest episode on his YouTube channel, Alin explores a new water, seeking specimen tench and bream โ€“ here’s his intro:

Fishing in Ireland for specimen tench and bream during early spring can uncover some truly forgotten waters, and this hidden Irish lake felt like stepping back in time. In this session, I explore an overgrown, rarely fished lake in Ireland in search of wild tench and big bream that still thrive untouched in these quiet waters.

With old boats, dense cover, and barely any angling pressure, this place had all the signs of a forgotten specimen fishing paradise. After hearing stories about this abandoned-style lake, I decided to set up for a short early spring fishing session targeting tench and bream on traditional tactics. What I found shocked me โ€“ beautiful dark fish, untouched surroundings, and a water that genuinely feels like nobody fishes anymore.

Galway and Erriff Fisheries Reopen as Water Temperatures Decrease

After the hot weather last week, several IFI managed fisheries closed due to water temperatures exceeding 20C on Thursday. Cooler weather followed in the second half of the week, and water temperatures have declined sufficiently by yesterday evening to allow the Galway and Erriff fisheries to reopen from today, June 2.
