Oisin Cahill of Inland Fisheries Ireland reports that Sunday May 24th saw the final event for Fisheries Awareness Week within the Eastern Basin District at Courtlough Trout Fishery near Balbriggan. The event was hosted by Garrett Ruigrok and his team in collaboration with IFI staff.

The fishing was restricted to fly only with catch and release being required. A well-stocked lake and a beautiful setting awaited our novice anglers

The weather for the event started overcast with a little wind and after a very knowledgeable fly casting demonstration by Garret over 45 anglers hit the water. The fish were coming fast and furious with two fish recorded to 10lbs in weight.

The lake was allowed settle for an hour during lunch and as the sun came out so did more and more anglers!

117 juvenile anglers fished the lake during the day and 45 adults with the majority having never fished before. All age groups took part in what were glorious conditions.

The fishing was constant with each angler on the day catching a fish. Garrett and his team alongside IFI staff were able to assist and provide tuition for these anglers and ensure their day was enjoyable and rewarding.
