A great mix of species from the Atlantic

Co Clare waters saw skipper Luke Aston landing Pollack, ling and haddock last week.  Even though Thursday’s conditions were poor anglers still managed 2 blues to the boat the one below at about 25 lbs and a good fighting 65 pounder.

Carrigaholt - Aug 11th

Friday got wet and windy but there were still some good double figure Thornback Ray around.

Carrigaholt - DoubleSaturday was busy with Pollack and mackerel bashing and Sunday saw a return of the calm seas.  Luke says they got some very good fishing with a nice mix of species, including common and bottle nosed Dolphins, humpback and Minkie whales around the boat.  Great company!

Enjoying the Atlantic too was Séan Maguire’s Lady Gwen II who had good steady fishing last week with lots of mackerel around.  Friday was a little choppy for a group of Limerick lads but that didn’t stop them having great fun fishing.

Conditions improved on Saturday for fishing albeit there was a bit of a swell. They had some lovely drifts for whitefish, and picked up a few nice species. While Sunday was a beautiful day on the ocean with some fine Pollack over the 3kg mark.

Top marks for guide Sid who delivers the fish !

Wexford guide Sid Jones has been a busy man lately.  In early April, IFI invited anglers to participate in the Bass Angling Survey and over 200 of you were good enough to complete the online survey forms.  On offer was the prize of a guided angling session and the lucky winner, Sean Martin from Clashmore, County Waterford, chose Sid Jones of Wexford as his preferred bass angling guide.

Sid tells us they had an excellent trip with great comradery and a few bass landed for each of them.

On a previous trip he had a wonderful couple of days fishing with Murside and her husband Don from Michigan USA. The bass didn’t turn up but they did manage a 45lb specimen Tope for Murside on her first ever boat trip.

While out guiding Tony Murphy  16 bass in total ranging in size from 4lb to 9lb were landed with 10 bas over 6lb and every fish was returned. A fantastic session.

Well done to the boys in Green – BSI Sensas bring it home!

BSI Sensas AC

NCFFI report:

BSI Sensas AC are the proud holders of the Bobby Smither’s Cup and the NCFFI Club Champions of 2016. Two Sensas Ireland teams represented the club in this weekend’s Club Championships which took place on the Grand Canal at Daingean. The two day match also serves to select the team to represent Ireland at the World Club Championships and is therefore fished to FIPS-ed rules.

The Leinster based club sponsored by Sensas Ireland entered the challenge presenting two teams, Green & Black fishing against Kingfisher AC, the Tubertini Match Club and Fermoy AC the current holders of the title who travelled to Italy to represent Ireland earlier this year. The Green team members Damien Maddock, Pat Bartley, Conor Browne, Fint Brennan and Matt Kemmy were victorious.

Gavin Walsh, team manager and sponsor who fielded the teams who would take first and second positions knew it was going to be a tough match with end pegs almost guaranteed to be section winners. And he was proved right with both end pegs winning A and E sections both days. The teams plan consisted of feeding one ball of ground bait the size of a golf ball with a pinch of pinkies and caster with chopped red worm fed on two lines. Hemp was fed at 13m looking for the better quality fish. This worked on Saturday when there was a wind blowing up the canal but not in the flat calm conditions of Sunday. Local knowledge prevailed as the water appeared coloured when in fact this was just the boggy canal bottom and the winning anglers fished 3 foot of line between the pole and float to prevent spooking the fish.

The 56th National Coarse Angling Championships took place recently in Ballybay, Co Monaghan. The market town, situated on the shores of Lough Major, was chosen for its accessibility to a number of angling venues that has the Dromore system on its doorstep. Recent wet weather dampened the spirits of some anglers, but 113 arrived to register in torrential rain at the Riverdale Hotel. This was to continue throughout the day; short sunny spells impacted on the weights of fish recorded…

Change in Weather Helps Visiting Fly Anglers on the River Boyne

The very unsettled weather lately has made fly fishing tough on the River Boyne and the strong gusty winds in particular making dry fly fishing for trout very difficult indeed. However, yesterday saw some respite from the difficult conditions as the wind settled a bit. Vincent and Niamh fished with angling guide Peter Cunningham on the lower Boyne and had some nice trout fishing. Water levels are very low and clear in the river at the moment and there have been hatches of blue winged olives in the afternoons.
