Kevin Lyons of Melview Lodge reports on the angling achievements of his guests:

Elliot with a nice Perch.
Elliot with a nice Perch.

Regular Belgium anglers Jean-Pierre and son Nick were here once again for a spot of Pike fishing, this time J.P invited his other son Elliot to join them. For Elliot it was his first time fishing in Ireland. Kevin said the guys caught a total of 41 Pike to 104cm and some very nice Perch on lures.

But it was first time Lucky for Elliot who had the biggest fish of the week at 104cm, most were tempted by trolling lures with a few caught on dead bait roach. Well done guys, see you in September.

Good Lough Derravaragh pike for two brothers

And another for his brother Des
And another for his brother Des

Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling  enjoyed fishing with two brothers and shares the story:

The Byrne brothers were back out fishing last week on Derravaragh, and had a few cracking pike on lures and dead baits. It was an evening session, and the pike were really on the move. Hugh had one super fish that really tested his skill, and it took him 10 minutes to get it under control. It dived deep and got caught up in heavy weeds, but eventually we boated the pike. Photographed it, and returned to fight another day.

Back home for the pike fishing in Mullingar

Rory and Rian Caffrey
Rory and Rian Caffrey

Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling reports:

Dermot Caffery and his family were back home in Mullingar for a few weeks’ holidays from Boston. Its now 3 years since the Caffrey family move to America, and naturally some angling had to take place while back in Mullingar.I had the pleasure of doing a few hours with Dermot’s son Rory and his cousin Rian Caffrey. Prior to our day out I had some very good fishing, but only managed to boat a few fish while out with the lads. Rory does a bit of fishing in and around the Boston area, and will be sending over a few fishy pics, from his angling adventures over in America.

Load of species for Donegal anglers afloat and ashore

John Dory
John Dory on the Kiwi Girl

In Donegal the quality of the fishing continues to meet high standards for both shore anglers and charter boat fishermen. At Downings the Rosguill has been getting a great mix of species including the ever popular John Dory.

John Dory
John Dory on Rosguill

Skipper Michael McVeigh tells us that Limeburner is fishing well, reefs are fishing well, Tory is fishing well, mackerel are a little patchy, the sand is fishing well and water temperature now 15 degrees or more. Apart from the tasty species like brill, turbot and, as mentioned earlier, John Dory, his anglers are also getting blue sharks.

John Dory
John Dory on the Kiwi Girl

Staying with charter fishing Kiwi Girl out of Mullaghmore and fishing on Donegal Bay continued to get great blue shark fishing over the weekend. Other trips yielded some fine fish including John Dory once again.

Rays on the distance rods
Rays on the distance rods

Killbegs Mariners report that there was plenty of sunshine over the Bank Holiday weekend on Donegal Bay’s shores and some lovely fish were caught. There were great hard diving wrasse and pollack whipping the lure rods over in close, in the camouflage of the kelp beds while the distance rods worked the really hard fighting spotted rays and flatties on the sand. All released to enjoy their bank holiday after pics.

Tompot Blenny
Tompot Blenny

There is no doubt that summer on the bay is in full bloom now with all forms of mini species on the bay acting out their annual hunts and survival techniques.  Drop a smidgen of ragworm into a seemingly barren kelp stack and it gets ambushed by tompot blennys and wrasse. Huge shoals of small sprats whizz by followed by coleys and pollack and all being attacked from the sky by gannets. Great to watch it all from the rocks chucking in lures and baits. In a single day we get as many as 11 species; turbot, flounder, plaice, dab, Tompot Blenny, ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse, pouting, pollack, coley, dogfish. In rain and sunshine just glad to be out. Catch, photo, release

Irish Kayak Fishing Open postponed

Gary Robinson reports:

It is with great regret that Kayak Fisherman Ireland has to announce the postponement of the Irish Kayak Fishing Open 2016 until further notice. The event will very much go ahead in the future but presently there are issues regarding feasible insurance cover for the event. Not wanting to be so irresponsible as to host an open event without adequate insurance cover, the best course of action is to postpone the event until adequate cover can be sourced. Apologies to any anglers for any confusion and inconvenience caused. Please keep checking the site for updates because the event will go ahead on an alternative date with fantastic prizes on offer. Stay tuned!

Kayak angling in Ireland

Gary discovered the thrill, freedom and pure joy of kayak fishing almost by accident. After purchasing kayaks with the intention of paddling trips with his long-suffering partner, he started to assess the suitability of such a craft as a fishing platform. Some internet searches showed him that he was not alone in his thoughts. America and Australia already had blossoming populations of kayak anglers. Needing no more encouragement, he set about rigging his first sit on top kayak and transforming it into a fishing platform to gain access to some of the more inaccessible waters.

Twenty-three species reported from Killala Bay!

Donal Kennedy, skipper of the “Leah”, reported that weather during July had been very mixed with northerly winds being most problematic as Killala Bay gives almost no shelter. However, Donal managed to provide his clients with quality fishing knowing his fishing grounds so well.

Members of the Larne & District Club had two fantastic days fishing on the 21st and 22nd of July with a phenomenal 23 species caught.

Only recently, a party of local anglers enjoyed a day’s fishing aboard “Leah” catching numerous rays up to double figures and returned alive. As the day progressed, whiting, red gurnard, tub gurnard, more rays (4 species) along with some lovely brill, turbot, plaice and dabs were landed; all in all a total of 12 species were caught. The rays caught were thornback, cuckoo, blonde and spotted.

Plenty of salmon still about but harder to catch at Ballisodare

Luke O’Connell reports

Things started to taper off somewhat at Ballisodare, with plenty of fish still about but proving hard to catch. However, a total of 116 fish were caught over the past two weeks with 46 of these released.

The most productive method was the worm taking some sixty fish, fifty fish were caught on the fly (most released) and only 6 were landed on the prawn.

Visiting Angler, Neville Aston, had a fine 11 lbs. fish on the worm at the Falls on Tuesday July 19th. On the same day, visiting French angler, Willie Marti, caught two nice fish of 7 lbs. and 5 lbs. on the prawn. On Monday 25th July, JJ Sullivan had a 6 lbs. fish on the fly at the Falls plus several more takes and hook ups. Albert Berry caught a brace of fish around the 5 lbs. mark also.

Most of the fish are averaging between 4 lbs. and 5 lbs. and the worm offers the best chance of catching at Ballisodare at the moment.

Fishing on Moy slower than in previous weeks but still over 260 salmon reported!

Ivan and Ian Clatchey, NI, successful on the Ridge Pool

Shark week off Clare coast, blues, porbeagles, tope and sixgills

4.6m sixgill shark
4.6m sixgill shark - a real monster

Last week it was tope and blue sharks for anglers on the Clare Dragoon and over the weekend there was more in store including serious sixgill sharks. Skipper Luke Aston reports…

Before the weekend we had blue sharks and tope (in the Estuary) and our run of good fortune with the sharks continues

4.6m sixgill shark
4.6m sixgill shark – a real monster

On Saturday we were out at the Skate / Sixgills again today and had a monster to the boat. At 4.6mtr long it was one of the biggest I’ve seen. Considering the record one we caught was 3.9mtr and 1056lb I can say this one was well over 1300lb. A fish of a lifetime for Tony Carrig.

On Sunday we were back out with a new group and had a lovely drift on the reefs. Some fine Ling around. Monday was a wet one but we had a nice day at the Congers tucked up in shelter.

On Tuesday, 02 August, we had a great shark drift with action from the off. We had 7 blue shark and 2 Porbeagles to the boat and a lots of runs and dropped baits. Looks like it’s going to be a top shark year and great to see the Porbeagle about so early. They were about 35 and 75lbs and the bigger one gave a good scrap.

Also fishing the Clare Coast was the Lady Gwen. A group of Limerick anglers were out on Friday and they had a good mix of species including spurdogs. Saturday and Sunday was spent on the reefs in pursuit of pollack, mackerel and the like. On Monday it was wet but the angles were well prepared and had some nice species today, including a”baby blue shark” that was tagged and released.
