In Donegal the quality of the fishing continues to meet high standards for both shore anglers and charter boat fishermen. At Downings the Rosguill has been getting a great mix of species including the ever popular John Dory.

Skipper Michael McVeigh tells us that Limeburner is fishing well, reefs are fishing well, Tory is fishing well, mackerel are a little patchy, the sand is fishing well and water temperature now 15 degrees or more. Apart from the tasty species like brill, turbot and, as mentioned earlier, John Dory, his anglers are also getting blue sharks.

Staying with charter fishing Kiwi Girl out of Mullaghmore and fishing on Donegal Bay continued to get great blue shark fishing over the weekend. Other trips yielded some fine fish including John Dory once again.

Killbegs Mariners report that there was plenty of sunshine over the Bank Holiday weekend on Donegal Bay’s shores and some lovely fish were caught. There were great hard diving wrasse and pollack whipping the lure rods over in close, in the camouflage of the kelp beds while the distance rods worked the really hard fighting spotted rays and flatties on the sand. All released to enjoy their bank holiday after pics.

There is no doubt that summer on the bay is in full bloom now with all forms of mini species on the bay acting out their annual hunts and survival techniques.  Drop a smidgen of ragworm into a seemingly barren kelp stack and it gets ambushed by tompot blennys and wrasse. Huge shoals of small sprats whizz by followed by coleys and pollack and all being attacked from the sky by gannets. Great to watch it all from the rocks chucking in lures and baits. In a single day we get as many as 11 species; turbot, flounder, plaice, dab, Tompot Blenny, ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse, pouting, pollack, coley, dogfish. In rain and sunshine just glad to be out. Catch, photo, release
