Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery

Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

A bream delight for anglers at the 2016 Clones Angling Festival…
John Potters of Lisbellaw, Co. Fermanagh hooked onto a bream shoal on the first day of the competition with 36 fish for 163lbs and a likely match record weight this year. To his left was Mick Hare a festival regular who takes part during his annual two week holiday to Ireland from the North of England who was delighted with his 146lb catch, a personal best in Ireland. These first day weights were to be difficult to beat over the next few days but it made for some good competition for the top five places with the leaders eager to hold onto their positions.

John Potter

The four day event is well attended by visiting anglers from England and this year saw 11 out of the 37 travel over for the competition on the prolific waters of County Monaghan fishing a variety of venues by daily rotation. The pole and feeder fishing venues included Corkeeran, Bairds Shore and Bream Rock on the Dromore system and by special permission from the Tyrone Guthrie centre the beautiful Annaghmekerrig Lake at Newbliss. TheCreighton Hotel Clones was the base for the anglers where bait from Irish Bait and Tackle Limited was available to buy on site as the competitors made their daily draw returning each and returned to check out the results.

The anglers were met with warm but showery conditions for the four days over the bank holiday weekend with the fishing tough but enjoyable. The festival as usual provided mixed bags with good nets of quality roach, 4 and 5lb bream and tench and hybrids and perch in smaller numbers. The top weights by venue were;
Annaghmekerrig 163lbs 4oz
Bream Rock 38lbs 5oz
Bairds Shore 36lbs 4oz
Corkeeran 33lbs 12oz

Not many salmon reported from the Laune last week

Billy Downes tells us that as of Tuesday 2nd August Laune raising slightly after Monday’s rain. The river was at 1.1m and still rising. It was carrying a good bit of colour from the Gweestin but this should be cleared by now. News of fish being caught or met is scarce enough despite a good angling effort.

That said a few anlgers met success including Dr Jim O’Sullivan who has become a recent convert to fly fishing. Jim met three fish on the fly in two visits to the Laune in recent days. He managed to land two of them. Tony Murphy had a good fish at Johnston’s on Saturday.Visiting angler Matze Tamme from Germany who was fishing with his friend Matt Standen had a nice peal on worm on Friday and John Turner had a nice fresh fish of 5 lbs at Heffernan’s.

To have a chance of a pull: Fish late, fine, small (trout flies – Alexandra ) and far off with a trout rod. Dr James O’Sullivan had success with grilse and sea trout in last week during the evenings with his trout rod.

Last week charter Skipper Donnie Geary was getting some good fishing for the anglers on John Boy…
On Sunday week last with a group from Cobh sea angling club we fished the peaks east of Power head and had a good catch of Pollack 4/5 lbs. and plenty of Conger. On Monday with a my old school pal John English with family and friends we went south and caught plenty of Whiting, a few cod, gurnards, Ling and Conger. On Tuesday the first of 4 days with a regular group from England, we again went to the eastern marks. The fishing was excellant for the first few hours with plenty of fine Pollack and about a dozen conger, but as the tide slacked so did the fish and the rest of the day was slow.
On Wednesday we went for species, drifting south of Daunt buoy we managed about 9 species even though the fishing was slow. After lunch we moved east to South of Cork buoy and caught some very nice Cod, Pollack, Ling and whiting. finishing with 14 species. Thursday we again went south and stopped for bait about 3 miles from the point, and were surprised to hit a lot of pollack, ling and Cod. We fished the area for most of the day until the wind picked up and we headed for the shelter of White bay where we had a nice Thornback and plenty of Dogs.

Ray to 18lb were landed
Ray to 18lb were landed

On Friday we headed for a wreck south east of the harbour and after a few slack drifts we dropped the anchor fishing was slow to start and a lot of tackle was lost, but we succeeded in catching 15 Ling and 10 conger but surprisingly not one pollack. We finished the day on the bank where we landed 5 rays biggest 18lb.
Also out last week from Cork Harbour was Crosshaven’s Wreckfisher which had skate and some really good looking coalfish.

Good run of sea trout continues at Costello and Fermoyle

Fishery manager Terry Gallagher reports on fishing for the week of 20 July – 03 August…

Water levels at Costello remained close to optimum as regular showers maintained the system in good order. John Maher and friends fished for 3 days and were very pleased with the 68 sea trout and 6lb salmon they notched up during their visit. Most of the sea trout caught were recorded as fresh, so the run continues!

Padhraic McDonagh fished the middle river where he landed 6 sea trout and commented that all the fish were in excellent condition and all fresh. Regular visitor Rene Lachemaer also fished river beats 2 & 3 and he too landed 6 sea trout.

Eamon O’Brien treated his grandchildren to an afternoon picnic on the famous “Rock Hotel” on Glenicmurrin. In between courses Eamon still managed an impressive 10 sea trout.  James Egan and Derek Veitch didn’t fare badly when they landed their 8 sea trout on Glenicmurrin.

 29/07/16 to 03/08/16

Unfortunately the salmon kept their heads down for the most part over the last week but not so the sea trout with some very notable catches recorded. Not least of which occurred when Robert Kelly and William Hamilton took a day on Glenicmurrin Lough and landed 24 sea trout, the best just under 2lbs 8ozs. What was even more remarkable is that this was their first time to fish the lake. They fished the upper lakes the following day catching a further 11 sea trout and lost a salmon.

Glenicmurrin fished consistantly well over the week with Eamon O Brien landing 16 sea trout and regular visitor Larry O Reilly 10. Pete Westwater returned for his annual visit to Glenicmurrin and notched up 13 sea trout. First time visitors, Dave Flynn & Andy Wojnicki were very happy with the 7 sea trout they caught as were brothers Richard and Hugh McGuire who recorded 8. Hugh was very unlucky not to add at least 1 salmon to his catch for the day after losing 2 fresh fish on River Beat 1 that evening.

Not that Glenicmurrin was the only star of the week as Muckinagh Lough produced 18 sea trout for a very pleased Eamon O Brien and Clogher Lough provided 16 fish for Sean Costello and Sean Bollustrum. After 2 relatively disappointing seasons for sea trout, 2016 is shaping up very nicely indeed.

July productive for sea trout anglers at Lough Inagh

Jungle Alex
Jungle Alex tied by colin Folan

Fishery manager Colin Folan reports that water levels remained good during July, however the weather did not help the fishing with humid and thundery spells.  In total 19 salmon, 153 sea trout and 40 brown trout were recorded for the month.  The catches were split fairly evenly between the river beats and lake.

Jungle Alex
Jungle Alex tied by colin Folan

Notable catches for July include Denis Murphy and Michael Heery (Dublin) who fished Inagh for two days and landed 13 sea trout to 1.5lbs and 3 grilse to 6lbs, mostly on a size 10 Green Dabbler.  William Hamilton (Dublin) fished Inagh for a day and landed 9 sea trout on a Connemara Black and Gold Dabbler.

Andy Bowman (Scotland) fished with locals Colin Folan and Kevin Crowley for a day on the river beats and they caught 10 sea trout and two fresh grilse (released) on Blue Delphi’s and a Silver Doctor.

Another notable catch was Ronan Power (USA) who fished Inagh for a couple of days without much action due to the scorching conditions, but managed a cracking brown trout of 9lbs on a Fr. Ronan fly.

These two Loughs, Derryclare and Inagh, lie in the lovely Inagh Valley with the Twelve Pins (Bens) of Connemara rising steeply to the west, and the Maumturk Mountain range to the east. There are two short connecting rivers, which contain four river beats. The fishery has spring salmon, grilse, sea trout and large indigenous brown trout. There are three sets of ‘Butts’ or long fishing piers, built out onto Derryclare Lough for the anglers convenience. There are no boats available on Derryclare Lough and all the fishing is done from the Butts and the bank.  Lough Inagh Fishery is fly only, and normal fishing hours are 930am – 7pm. The river beats are rotated on a half day basis. The manicured river banks, and cosy fishing huts provide comfort for anglers of all ages and fitness.

World Cup results in on Mask

Lough Mask World Cup
World Cup winner Thomas O'Loughlin with (l-r): Sponsor Paul Duffy, World Cup President Joe Cusack, Winning Boatman Patrick Molloy, Thomas O’Loughlin, Boat manager Ronan Cusack, World Cup PRO Denis Kelleher

Ronan Cusack reports that Monday evening saw a climax to the 2016 World Cup flyfishing Championships on Lough Mask as 460 anglers battled it out for the much sought after World Cup trophy. Conditions on the final day were perfect, with soft winds and plenty of cloud cover as the 120 finalists headed off in the morning. The deep water was the place to be again this year, with plenty of hungry daphnia feeders willing to grab at anything pulled fast with a florescent tag.

The World Cup committee had reduced the bag limit this year to 3, with any additional trout being measured and released. These measurements were then converted into weights and the overall catch weight was recorded.

Lough Mask World Cup
World Cup winner Thomas O’Loughlin with (l-r): Sponsor Paul Duffy, World Cup President Joe Cusack, Winning Boatman Patrick Molloy, Thomas O’Loughlin, Boat manager Ronan Cusack, World Cup PRO Denis Kelleher

This year’s winner was the well-known Corofin, Co Clare angler, Thomas O’Loughlin, with a massive catch of 12 trout for a calculated weight of 13.4310lbs. Patrick Molloy of Oughterard was Thomas’s boatman on the day. Patrick also took the prize for being the boatman who brought in the biggest number of fish over the 5 days.

Second place went to Jonathan Craven of Roscommon with 8 trout for 8.5110lbs. Kenneth O’Keeffe from Kells, Co. Meath took third place with 5 trout for 6.0980lbs. The heaviest fish prize went to Feichin McMorrow Jnr from Sligo, with a trout of 2.880lbs.

This year’s best under-21 angler was Diarmuid Kelly from Tipperary with 2 trout weighing 2.770lbs. The best lady angler was Sue Hunter from Galway with 3 trout weighing 4.506lbs. This year’s best overseas angler was Bob Holland from the UK with 4 trout weighing 4.255lbs.

Overall the lake is fishing well at the moment and well worth a visit.

Declan Gibbons reports that the week just gone by saw some excellent fish being caught.

Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge, Glencorrib (www.corribangling.com) reported a busy week catering for Tim Rowley a regular visiting angler from the UK and his family, a party of eight. The fishing was mixed with several trout to dapped mayfly and dry sedges on Monday and Tuesday in the Inchagoill area. On Wednesday Larry said it was great to see the children in the group catch lots of quality rainbows at Mike Faherty’s fishery in Oughterard, a great venue for introducing young people to flyfishing. The remainder of the week produced 12 trout up to 3.5lbs on the lower lake to dry olives.

Offaly man Dan Gilmartin and his partner fished out of Derrymoyle for 3 days and landed 7 fish for 12lbs on wet fly and dapping. Also in the Derrymoyle area Shane Coady from Dundalk had 12 fish for 5 days all released apart from 3, mostly caught on the dap.

Kevin Molloy (087-9604170) report reasonably good fishing to be had in the area on a mixture of trolling, dapping and wetfly with German and French guests on Tuesday and Thursday landing 6 trout for 9lbs.

Basil Shields of Ardnasillagh Lodge (086-0869758) hosted Monaghan angler Peter Boyle, who landed 3 fish on Saturday last on wet fly with the best fish being 2.5lbs. Ronnie McIntyre from Fermanagh had

8 fish for 3 days with the best fish being 4.25lbs. Ian Matchett from Lurgan and Brian McBradley from Newtownards had 5 fish each on a mixture of wet and dry mayfly patterns, with Brian’s fish being 4.25lbs. Dublin man Eddie Rowe had 3 fish for his recent visit to Lough Corrib with his best fish being 2.25lbs. In the Cong area Frank Costello of Ashford Bay Boat Hire and Guiding (087-2524253) reports good fishing in the area mainly on dry fly and dapping, with the best fishing being had on sedges. On Monday last he guided two hotel guests landing 7 trout varying in weights from 1.25 – 3.25lbs                 .

Also in the Cong area Martha Mannion Ryan from Ryans River Lodge (www.ryansriverlodge.com) reports on Daithi Ryan landing 2 salmon – one on the fly and the second spinning, and a brown trout also spinning on the Cong River, which made for a memorable day for the young angler. Martha also tells us that reasonable fishing is being had by guests staying with them in the Inchagoill area.

Local club man Conor O’Leary was next up that evening with a 3.25lbs grilse from the Falls Pool – he caught his fish on a Cascade.  Regular visitor Gael Kerschbaumer started his stay with us nicely with a fine 6.15lbs grilse from the Sea Pool on the 31st, this fish was taken on a Willie Gunn micro-tube. Gary Freed from the US had a 0.75lbs sea trout from Finnegan’s on Beat 2 and another from the Lower Garden Pool on Beat 9, then it was Garry’s turn to catch a grilse and did so in style from the top of the falls, this fish was estimated at 5.5lbs and was released again after putting up a good struggle.

Monday the 1st was quieter with 1 sea trout being released by Greg Rushing of about 0.75lbs.
