Little angling effort on Lough Melvin though grilse are plentiful

Lindsey Clarke reports from LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 13th  to Sunday 26th June 2016 (2 weeks).

The reports from Lough Melvin over the past fortnight have been variable. Trout fishing has been good on some days and very poor on others. The mayfly hatch seems to be over already which is not surprising given that it started very early this season. There has been little angling effort for salmon despite the lough now containing large numbers of grilse. Most rods fishing the Northern Ireland portion of the lough have long since used their 2 tags and are not fishing the lough now. There were some 10 grilse caught for the week, all by trolling.

Drowes River is full of grilse and catches have averaged a dozen a day

Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 13th  to Sunday 26th June 2016 (2 weeks).

Water levels were fairly low on the 13th with the gauge only reading 0.37m The river rose slightly the following day with the gauge reading 0.40m but the river gradually fell over the following 6 days but good rainfall on the 20th and 21st and showers thereafter meant the river began to rise rapidly and then more steadily. By the 26th the river had risen to 0.56m, a lovely height for angling. The Drowes had a very good run of grilse and fished very well over the fortnight with the average daily catch around 12 salmon! The greater part of the catch consisted of grilse in the 3 to 5lb size bracket. For the period to date, there are 88 salmon recorded in the catch register at the fishery office with many more records yet to be entered when visitors return and rods staying at the fishery accommodations tally their weekly catches. Grilse were caught from all areas of the river on fly, spinner worm & prawn/shrimp.

Drowes - The fly That Took S. Carty’s Fish At Briney’s.Space precludes giving all catch records but given here are a selection of some of the catches taken from the Catch Register at the fishery office. On the 14th, Dave Cox recorded a 6½lb grilse caught on a fly from Red Roof. Brendan Lyons reported a 10½lb salmon caught on a spinner from Black Hole and Brian McClintock accounted for 4 grilse weighing around 4lb each caught on worm & spinner from Black Hole & Red Roof with one of these being released again. On the 15th, William Rainey logged 2 grilse weighing 3 & 4lb caught on prawn from the Sea Pools. John Gallagher caught and released a 5lb grilse on fly from the Eel Weir and William Marshall registered 2 grilse weighing 4lb each caught on prawn from the Sea Pools. On the 16th, Patrick O’Malley recorded 3 grilse weighing 5, 5 & 7lb caught on shrimp from The Wash Stones and The Grazing’s. On the 18th, Brett McKee reported 2 grilse weighing 4 & 5lb caught on prawn and fly from the Sea Pools. Walter Demmer recorded 2 grilse weighing 4 & 5lb caught on prawn from the Wash Stones. Michael Maguire logged 2 grilse weighing 3½ & 4lbs caught on shrimp from the Eel Weir and the McCutcheon party accounted for 5 grilse weighing from 3 to 5lb all caught on fly from the Eel Weir. On the 20th, Barry Chew recorded 3 grilse weighing 3 & 7lbs caught on a Toby spinner from New Bridge and Carlos Marcos accounted for 2 grilse weighing 3 & 4lb caught on worm from Red Roof. On the 21st, Columba Fitzpatrick logged 2 grilse weighing 3 & 4lbs caught on worm from the Black Hole. On the 22nd, Nigel Abrahams recorded 3 grilse weighing 3, 3, & 3½lb caught on worm from Upper Mill and the Thierry Schwede party accounted for 5 grilse weighing from 3 to 4lb caught on spinner from Boat House. On the 23rd, William Rainey recorded 3 grilse weighing from 3 to 5lb caught on prawn from the Sea Pools with 2 of these being released again. On the 24th, the Thierry Schwede party landed another 3 grilse weighing from 3 to 4lb on worm and shrimp. On the 25th, William Rainey reported another 2 grilse weighing 3 & 4lb on prawn from the Sea Pools with one of these being released again and Calum Kettles logged 2 grilse weighing 3lb each caught on shrimp. On the 26th, Nigel Abrahams recorded a further 2 grilse weighing 3lb each caught on worm from the Blackwater. There were numerous records of single grilse catches over the 2 weeks that have not been included here.

With the good grilse run and the good water levels, prospects look extremely good for the coming week

Some nice salmon up into the double figures for the Laune

Noel Hickey a lovely fish of 11lbs
Noel Hickey a lovely fish of 11lbs

Billy Downes reports from the Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 27th June Laune water level now at .96 M  .   Rain on Tuesday should send it up to a better height for all methods. There was some good news on the fish side over the last few days.   Thomas Ward fishing Beat 3 managed to meet and land two beauties of 9 lbs and 7 lbs on the fly.  Noel Hickey landed a fish of 11 lbs on Laune Anglers waters and broke on a larger fish after a good few minutes of play.  Matt and Paul Murphy managed to meet a few fish one of 10 lbs, lost and landed a few grilse at Johnston’s earlier last week.  Other than that news of fish being landed is scarce enough.

Ted O’Riordan:

Ted O’Riordan was secretary of Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers Association for 17 years up to 2006. Sadly he passed away on Thursday.  As well as performing the work of secretary of the Association in an exemplary and fashion for all those years Ted was also a serious opponent to the imposition of Catchment Management (Kerry Style) on the Laune system and campaigned to end drift netting off the Irish coast.  He wrote an Angling Column in the Kerryman which was widely read much further afield than Kerry and by an audience more extensive than the angling fraternity.  He is sadly missed by his wife Maureen, his children and extended family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis

Laune:

The Laune with the slight rise is very fishable by all methods just now. More rain would improve prospects.  I see there is more on the way on Friday.  Good high tides all this week, to benefit from the tides, be fishing in the lower river about 3 hrs after high tide at Cromane.  As our previous secretary Ted O’Riordan used to say ‘salmon run the Laune every day of the year’.  I saw this for myself on Saturday evening when I had to get out of the way of fish running off the tide in 6 inches of water.

Prospects:

A rise in water should improve things especially over the weekend.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters from now to 31st July cost only €25 excellent value compared to other fisheries and the chances of a fish.

Beat 3:

The Beat is holding a few fish now and well worth a try especially if the level comes up a good bit.

The Brown trout fishing continues good. Please note that the €10 trout permit allows an angler to fish for brown trout ‘fly only’ If you want to spin or worm fish you need to purchase a €25 permit.

For Beat 3 Permit costs click on: Beat 3 Permit Prices 2016

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25 for 2016

Hard fighting Bandon fish provide great sport

Scottish angler Mr Barton
Scottish angler Mr Barton

Jason Nash of Bandon Angling Association reports that Mr. Barton from Scotland caught a lovely, sea liced grilse on the fly on Friday. Great sport on a single handed rod! Very encouraging to see a good run of grilse pushing through the system at the moment.

Scottish angler Mr Barton
Scottish angler Mr Barton

He tells us that Salmon continue to run the Bandon, again mostly grilse. It’s very heartening to see a good, early run of these fish and whilst they are not running in big numbers, the entry of fresh fish is consistent. What should be said also is that the fish are in great condition and it has been mentioned on numerous occasions how hard fighting they have been. There is still no sign of any major rainfall on the way but the showers are helping to freshen up what is a low river.

River Bandon

There were about 25 fish reported for the week. The majority of them were grilse and were caught on the lower river on worm ‘ shrimp ‘ and fly.  The river is very low at the moment but there is rain forecast for midweek so that should liven things up.

Clare charterboats battle the weather to get the fishing

Luke Aston of the Clare Dragoon and Sean Maguire of Lady Gwen report on the charter boat fishing off the Clare coast…

Wednesday saw Luke head out West again.  The day was a bit rough but the fishing good with lots of Pollack, ling and haddock and a mix of other fish.

Luke Aston - 22.06.16Friday fished in a strong nw breeze which gave them good shelter to the Loop and there were lots of mackerel all over. Luke says they did poke their heads outside the headland but wind vs tide meant rough seas and no drift. However they came on some very good sized pollack back in the shelter and it finished up a good day.

Well done Liam...
Well done Liam…

Saturday saw just about workable conditions but it made for hard fishing as the drift was very fast. A couple of fine lumps of Pollack around though.

Luke Aston - June 25thThe weather at present is making fishing conditions very hard although today Luke just did a short day in the estuary and the best fish was this Bull Huss around 8lbs.

Luke Aston - Bull huss around 8lbsSaturday saw Sean McGuire travel a bit to get decent fishing but then they had some good fishing in the afternoon.

Some lovely grilse from Munster Blackwater

BALLYDUFF BRIDGE SALMON FISHERY

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery report on a great week with guests catching their first ever salmon and a delighted David Walker landing a sea-liced grilse of 3.5lbs on Thursday. The delight on his face says it all. Well done also to Jason catching another grilse on the fly on Wednesday night also. Martin Cronin had 2 fish of 3lbs each on the fly at Ballincurrig both fish safely released.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery - Salmon

On Saturday Tony O Riordan hooked 6 fish and landing 4 safely releasing 3.  Pat Boland landed another fish at the Bridge and Tony Murtagh catch 2 fish at Ballincurrig on the fly safely releasing both.   A lot of fish were seen on Ballyduff beats throughout the day.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery - Salmon June 2016

Monday too was a great day at Ballyduff Bridge Fishery with Tony Murtagh landing a fresh fish of around 5lbs at the bridge and 2 other fish being lost also. Well done to Patrick and Stephen who landed and released two fish one of around 3lbs and another one of around 12lbs from the Ballincurrig beat.

FORT WILLIAM

Paul Whelan tells us that fishing is still fantastic there at the moment with another 4 landed last Wednesday on fly with 3 released safely.
Alwynn Moss had a nice grilse of 5lbs on fly off the Glenmore beat.
Micheal Long from Carlow had a nice fish of about 7lbs off the Castle beat released safely. His son Robert had 2 beauties of about 10lbs also on fly which too were released safely.

BLACKWATER SALMON FISHERY

Glenda Powell reports some new fish in the system after the rain and says;  Great salmon fishing continues on the Cork Blackwater and we are catching fish almost every day. In fact I am sure that we are losing as many fish as we are catching as the salmon have been in a peculiar taking mood for the last two weeks, often taking a quick run with the fly and dropping it.  It is great for keeping the angler awake and anticipation of a fish on the next cast is very high. The fish that we are catching are mainly grilse however there have been fish caught in the last week up to 8lbs and one today of 7lbs.  Most of the salmon being caught are carrying sea-lice, fresh in on the tide. We had rain yesterday and the gauge at Ballyduff has risen by 8 cms and this small rise is bringing in more fresh fish – we had three fish on the fly today on our lower beats. The water temperature at Ballyduff is 12 degrees and we are using floating lines with short intermediate tips and size 10-14 flies or little tubes. Black spinners with copper blades seem to be the favourite at the minute for anyone spinning although the fly is working better than the spinner.  We still have some availability left for this week, however Sunday 3rd July and Monday 4th July is fully booked. September is fully booked for guiding/tuition with me, yet I still have a few spaces left if you would like to book fishing in September. If you would like to go fishing then you can either contact me Glenda on 087 2351260 or if you can’t get me then please call Noel on 085 7220923 or email glenda@glendapowellguiding.com or glenda@blackwatersalmonfishery.com

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery

Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season.
