In her address, Councillor McGloughlin stated that it was a great day for Greystones as it now had a functioning harbour, a large marina and magnificent club house facilities for the five water based clubs. Greystones will, she expects; become a large centre for marine activities and she wished the Greystones Ridge Angling Club continued success in the future. The event was celebrated by current, former and founder members of the club as well as friends, families, neighbours, community members and local dignitaries. In attendance were Mr Sean Quirke of Wicklow Co Council, Councillor Derek Mitchell, Councillor Tom Fortune and retired Councillors George Jones and Kathleen Kelleher. Many retired members of GRAC were in attendance including Mr  Noel Belton (one of the oldest surviving members), Mr Christy Nutty, Mr Hugh Taylor and Mr Michael Doyle.

The club Chairman Mr Dermot Macaulay welcomed the dignitaries and honoured guests, neighbouring club members, retired members and current members to the new facilities. He hopes that the new facilities will become an object of pride for the population of Greystones and its environs. He thanked Wicklow Co. Council and in particular Mr Sean Quirke and the members of Sisks and again Mr Brendan Sheehy in particular. This club house could not have happened without their drive and energy. He also congratulated the club members and executive for their patience and fortitude during the long drawn out construction phase.

GRAC was formed in 1959 at a meeting in Greystones and had it initial base above the ‘Creperie’ next to the Beach House at the Harbour. The club grew in strength and in 1977 a club house was built by the members who raised the funds from club members by way of redeemable bonds. The old club house on the North beach was opened by the Minister for Education Mr John Wilson who as it happened was a club member.

The development of the new club house complex commenced in 2007 and the club houses are now complete and operational for the Greystones Ridge Angling Club and the Greystones Sailing Club in operation. The Diving club, the Rowing Club and the Sea Scouts club houses will be operational shortly following their fit out.

Join Up Now

The new club it is hoped will be a centre of excellence for Sea Angling. It is going to proceed with angling courses for young and old and GRAC intend to promote sea angling for all with some introduction to sea angling courses. The club welcomes new members so if you are interested in joining or finding out more about the club they invite you to enquire via the GRAC facebook page HERE

Some Nice Pike Action in the North-East for Visiting French Anglers

Dominic Pictured With One of Todays Pike

Angling guide Peter Cunningham has been in contact to let us know that some of his French clients had a nice bit of pike fishing yesterday and today in the north east. Although conditions have not been ideal for pike anglers Dominic and Jean-Jacques from the south of France had 7 nice pike on Wednesday 22nd June with the best measuring 87cm. All of the fish were taken on lures and were very hard fighting. The water is low and clear and some rain would help matters.

The lads were back in action again today Thursday and had a couple of fish up to lunchtime one on a lure and the other on a dead-bait. According to Peter one good high double fish was lost. The fish battled vey hard and eventually won its freedom by throwing the hooks.

Irish Angling Update – 23 June 2016

Catch Photo Release
Releasing a trout on the River Suir

It was another week of historic catches for Irish anglers. The rain saw salmon fishing improve on many rivers and the cloudy, cooler conditions were a help to coarse anglers too, with good bream and tench at a number of venues. At sea there were some exciting reports from boat and shore, but it was a kayak that provided some of the most stunning thrills…

We’ll get straight to the business of Catch of the Week. Graham Smyth has this honour more than once and this week is perhaps one of his finest moments yet. Graham has continuously pushed the bounds of what is possible for a kayak angler and his catch of a porbeagle shark at the weekend is is one of the most exciting winners of the Catch of the Week we have featured.

Charter boat anglers fishing from Union Hall were also getting shark and other big fish with skate to an estimated 196lb landed. There were also plenty of blue sharks for boats out of Courtmacsherry where specimen whiting and even hake were recorded. The change in weather has limited fishing on the more exposed coasts of the west but building shoals of mackerel are a good sign. At Killala Bay anglers enjoyed catching a range of species with cod, pollack and ling all taken in double figures.

The unsettled weather saw quite a bit of rain in different parts of the country. Where it fell over the headwaters of our salmon rivers there was usually a good run of salmon. Chief amongst these was the Moy which saw 645 salmon landed last week. Other rivers in the area also showed an improvement and there were 215 salmon at Ballisodare and good fishing on Carrowmore Lake, the Owenmore and the Garavogue. Fishing picked up on the Erriff too and a run of decent sea trout was welcomed by anglers. The Galway Fishery had a great week with almost 100 salmon caught. In Kerry and Cork, the Laune, Lough Currane, Owenmore Fishery, Ilen, Lee and Munster Blackwater all produced good fishing following the rains.

Congratulations to Italy, not for last nights soccer result, but for their win in the World Master’s Fly Fishing Championships fished on Loughs Corrib, Inagh, Fee and Muck last week. On the individual front, it was celebrations all round for well-known Renvyle man Jackie Coyne, who won the gold medal for top angler. On Corrib the settled weather continued up to the weekend, making for ideal conditions for Caenis fishing in the mornings, but the weather has turned more unsettled and breezy now, giving better daytime fishing. Sheelin anglers are starting to turn their attention to Sedges although there are still fish being taken on Spent Gnat. Last week there were much fewer anglers on the lake and only 43 trout were reported, the best a fish estimated to weigh 8lb. The Fane was one of the rivers that did not get much in the way of rain and the river is still very low. Small dries are working well with light tippet and long leaders but the trout are very spooky due to the conditions.

The Farney Festival is being fished at venues around Carrickmacross. So far there have been a few good bags in excess of 10kg. Good bream and tench are showing in the catches which are expected to continue to improve over this 5 day event. There were also catches of good bream in the Shannon at Athlone. Daily weights in the 10kg class were reported at Daingean – serious fishing for a canal venue. Other venues that are fishing well include Lough Egish and Lough Ramor.

As always summer sees many pike angler down rods, but that’s not to say there is not some great sport to be had. Lough Derg’s pike angling guides continue to produce the goods for their clients and some good fish up to and over 100cm have been reported in the last week. Midlands venues are also fishing well and American anglers fishing with Michael Flanagan had some lovely fish as part of their angling holiday.

IFI would like to thank all of the bass and sea anglers who participated in the Irish Bass Survey which had been running since early April. The survey has now closed and with over 200 anglers submitting complete responses we should get some really interesting and important information back on all aspects of bass angling and the bass fishery in Ireland. Results of the survey are expected to be published and posted on the IFI website towards the end of August so watch this space.

Met Eireann tells us that over the coming weekend, Saturday will have scattered showers for a time but they will be much lighter and not as prolonged as those of the previous two days. Sunday will start mainly dry and bright but it will cloud over as the day goes on, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle developing in the north and west through the afternoon and evening. On both days highest temperatures will range from 15C on northwest coasts to 20c in the southeast. Winds will be light to moderate, mainly westerly.  The weather will stay slightly unsettled early next week with a westerly Atlantic flow continuing, though many areas will see a lot of dry weather and temperatures will be around normal for the end of June.

Not a bad fishing forecast for anglers on holiday or looking forward to getting out in the next few days.

All that’s left to say is Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling reports on some great pike fishing in the Midlands…

It’s becoming a very small world these days on the angling scene with facebook, social media and all that stuff. I was contacted last week by Steve Nolan from Kansan who was traveling across Ireland with his wife Kathryn. We managed to get them to venture to Mullingar, and spend a few days fishing our local lakes.

Steve is based in Fort Leaveworth Combined Arms Forces Center, and Kathryn is on a break from school teaching. It was not their first trip to Ireland, but never dropped into Westmeath. Well the rest is history, as Steve and Kathryn was over the moon with their few days in Mullingar.

I will be keeping in with the Nolan Clan from Kansas, and you can be sure they will be back in the capital of the Midlands.

West Cork salmon rivers: 10 on Ilen, Mealagh remains quiet

Reporting from IFI Macroom, Eileen Carroll has an update on the salmon fishing in West Cork…

RIVER ILEN

10 salmon landed for the week, best was 10lbs landed and released by Ian O’ Sullivan, local angler, on a Flying C.

RIVER MEALAGH

No report.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Irish Bass Survey – thanks for taking part

As an added incentive, we offered bass survey respondents the chance to win the prize of a day’s guided bass fishing; one lucky angler had his name drawn from the hat and that angler was Sean Martin from Clashmore, County Waterford. Sean has chosen Sid Jones of Wexford as his preferred bass angling guide and the pair will be hooking up in the coming weeks for a day’s bass  fishing somewhere on the Wexford shore – we’ll keep you updated on how they fare.

Cod, ling, pollack to double figures on Killala Bay

Donal Kennedy, skipper of the Leah, reported excellent sea angling for some of his clients on Killala Bay during the early part of June.

Happy Mayo anglers on Killala Bay
Happy Mayo anglers on Killala Bay

On June 5th a party of French anglers enjoyed a day’s fishing on Killala Bay. They left Killala harbour at 8.30am in good time due to the big spring tides. The weather was perfect and the sea was calm while the skipper headed out far into the bay. Mackerel was the order of the day first but as always the skipper was well prepared with fresh frozen mackerel to use as bait. The French anglers enjoyed a cracking day’s fishing catching fine cod, ling and pollack with many of them into double figures.

On June 12th a local party from Co. Mayo set out for a day’s fishing in the bay. Conditions were also perfect and the fishing was steady. The group caught fine cod and ling up to double figures together with pollack, pouting and coalfish.
