Friends Jeff, Paul, Nigel and Harry from the UK who have been regulars to Ireland now for a number of years. The weather was not always the best for fishing but they stuck it out, prebaiting a few different venues see them catch some nice fish during the sessions.

Bream, Hybrids and Tench were their main target however on some of the sessions it was the Roach that turned up to feed in numbers. Kevin said, the guys are experienced when it comes to fishing and know the weather plays it part. The lads stuck with it and caught some very nice Bream, Hybrids and Tench during their stay, hopefully the conditions will be better next time around.

All fish released safely back to the water.

West Cork salmon rivers: 8 on Ilen, Mealagh quiet

Reporting from IFI Macroom, Eileen Carroll has an update on the salmon fishing in West Cork…

RIVER ILEN

8 salmon landed for the week, best 7.5lbs landed by Donal Kelleher, club angler, on worms.

RIVER MEALAGH

No report.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Jason Nash of Bandon Angling Association reports tells us that of the 5 salmon caught in the club waters 3 were tempted by the shrimp, 1 succumbed to a worm and another fell to a spinner. Although the river is clean and easily fishable, a flood at this stage would be more than welcome.  Ebor Benson from the Bandon club provided the photos for this weeks reports andyYou can see more of his fantastic work on his Facebook page, https://m.facebook.com/EborBensonPhotography/

For the new year, Bandon Angling Association have set up a new website which you can view here. A new guiding service has been launched in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon.

Some good grilse fishing in the Laune more rain needed

Billy Downes reports that as of 13 June the Laune water level is  still very low at 0.8m despite recent rain. Members encountered a few nice grilse during the week – one Tralee angler had four grilse for the week but he was the exception because most of us are struggling to meet one.  It helps if you get out of course.  The Laune is still fishable by all methods but a good rain would improve prospects.  That said there will always be a few fish running even in these conditions provided they manage to avoid the draft nets in Cromane and Killorglin.

Prospects: Pray for rain and get out there.

Beat 3:  Beat is in need of water more so than lower fisheries about two feet of water would do.   The Brown trout fishing continues good and a few salmon are resident in pools.  Please note that the €10 trout permit allows an angler to fish for brown trout ‘fly only’ If you want to spin or worm fish you need to purchase a €25 permit.

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association

Lots of juniors and sea trout to 3lb in Owenmore

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

16 June: The water levels are still perfect for fishing at the moment and hopefully we will get more rain before the week end. We have had some terrific fishing over the last few days. We had a grisle of 7 lbs yesterday and even though it was in the river a while it put up a terrific fight before it was released. We had a lot of juniors running but we also has trout up to 3 lbs weight, bars of silver with sea lice on them. We had a few small trout caught that had a worrying amount of sealice on them. One little trout had nearly 30 around the gills alone. If anybody else has noticed this they might contact me.

Stop blaming EU over our angling regulations – Senator Conway-Walsh, The Mayo News

THE Irish Government’s refusal to license small inshore boats as passenger vessels during sea-angling events does not originate in any EU law or regulation. Thats is according to Senator Rose Conway-Walsh who has accused the authorities of having ‘contradictory policies on boating regulations’ in light of clarification sought and received from the European Commission by her colleague,  MEP Liadh Ní Riada.  “Sea angling is an important…

Waterways Ireland has been advised by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) that a fish stock survey will take place, commencing on Mon 13 Jun, on Lough Derg.

Click for full size map
Click for full size map

There will be 170 sampling sites in total and most survey nets will be set on the bottom of the lake.

However, there will be surface floating nets, 30m and 220m in length, also set during the survey.  Every effort will be made to set these from late evening to early morning to avoid routine boating traffic. The nets will be marked with large orange buoys and where possible navigable channels leading to harbours will be avoided.

The vessels associated with the survey will not hamper navigation.

Masters are requested to keep a sharp look out for the net marker buoys when on passage to avoid running any entanglement.

Waterways Ireland thanks its customers for their cooperation in this matter.

A Devaux Sedge Does the Trick for Jack During an Evening Session on the Boyne

The Majestic River Boyne "A Trout Fishers Paradise"

Peter Cunningham shares a report from Jack Rogers who has been doing a fair bit if trout fishing recently and has enjoyed some success during the last few weeks on Lough Sheelin. Recently though, Jack has been staying closer to home and has done some evening trout fishing on the River Boyne over the last few nights. On Monday evening Jack caught a lovely wild brown trout on the Boyne which he estimated to be in the 2-3lb bracket. The fish was taken on a devaux sedge and in Jacks words “it haired off on me once hooked.” According to Jack he had a very good fight from the fish even though it was caught on his heavier 7 weight rod.

According to Peter water levels are up about 7″ following heavy showers over the last few days. The water is also slightly coloured and there is some weed in suspension. Sedge fishing on the Boyne will improve in the coming weeks if the weather and water conditions cooperate.

For all of the up to the minute information and advice Peter can be contacted at the Drogheda Angling Centre, by email at petercunningham3@gmail.com or by mobile at 086 4682516
