Tope, congers and plenty of bait off Clare coast

First tope of the Season on the Clare Dragoon

Luke Aston of the Clare Dragoon and Sean Maguire of Lady Gwen reports on the charter boat fishing off the clare coast…

First tope of the Season on the Clare Dragoon
First tope of the Season on the Clare Dragoon

01 June: Luke Aston’s crew started the day with plenty Mackerel at the loop. Then it only got better as they tried for a tope for the first time this year. There were plenty of them about and they soon had 8 in the boat for a short enough session. All the tope were male and the best was 157cm long and around the 40lb mark.

A good conger
A good conger

02 June: Still a good sign of mackerel today and the Pollack seem to be moving inshore a bit says Luke Aston. They had a conger session north of the Loop. It was a bit slow but this fine conger was among the catch. In the estuary on the Huss marks they had no luck with just the Doggies to keep them company.

Sean Maguire says his anglers had a very enjoyable evening trip to the Loop. They got lots of mackerel, coalies and some fine pollock.

03 June: Fishing was good in the early morning on Lady Gwen, but slowed a bit in the afternoon. All the same, even when it was slow they still were still getting pollock and some fine big mackerel… and great sunshine.

04 June: The good weather continues off the Clare coast and it’s just a joy to be on the water according to Luke. Fishing is easy and plenty fish about. Mackerel seem to be all over the ground now and there is a good mix of whitefish with plenty Haddock coming onto the ground.

05 June: Sea conditions are still perfect which is good because the tides are very big and fast. Luke reports the fishing is very good with lots of species. Stage of tide does make a difference though with the fishing changing a lot.

Cod

06 June: As Luke comes to the end of a busy 10 days the forecast is giving some bit of a change but it was still a lovely day on the sea. Just north of the Loop the marks were full of small Coalfish with fine mackerel and Pollack through them. Further north they had some nice fish including a double figure Cod and a 15lb Bull Huss.

Interesting start to the charter fishing season at Downings

Cuckoo wrasse

Michael McVeigh of the charter boat Rosguill in Downings, Co. Donegal reports on the start to his fishing season…

Cuckoo wrasse
Cuckoo Wrasse

05 June: Mackerel are playing “silly buggers” same as this past 4 years – they should be fairly plentiful at start June, but not so – they are scarce. Our old friends from way back 13 years ago have returned from vacation (or perhaps they were in jail)  – lots of Octopii turning up. Tory Pollack are off to a reasonable start, which is more than can be said of the Flatfish at Tory – Dabs plentiful, but our real targets of Turbot , Brill & Plaice are “missing in action” – actually missing in inaction! Wrecks fishing as normal for early season – billions of Coalfish but decent Pollack & Ling if you can get to fish for them. Limeburner is fishing OK for Gurnards, Whiting & the usual suspects – reports of good numbers of Haddock.

Bert's Ling

07 June: Had a good day on the Wrecks with some nice Ling and a couple of bonus Cod. Limeburner fishing well for Haddock, Whiting, Gurnards, etc.

Thresher shark for Kinsale boat tops West Cork reports

Thresher shark from Kinsale
John Harrington with his thresher shark from Kinsale. This fantatic fish wins John Catch of the Week

Ger Murphy of Sea Breeze III out of Kinsale reports that Dublin angler John Harrington hooked a very rarely encountered thresher shark yesterday. It was an epic fight lasting 3 hours and John stayed on the reel the whole time. The reel was stripped on a number of occasions. The rod being a 20lb class was only just up to the rod the Shimano 4/0 reel really showed it’s class in lasting the pace. The huge fish was estimated to weigh in the region of 300lb, but as it was safely released after being unhooked we’ll never know for sure. One thing that is certain though, is that this is the first reported catch by an angler in Irish waters through we have had in the Irish Angling Update. Two years ago there was a report of a thresher shark breaching off Dungarvan and there have been occasional sightings and commercial landings, but this catch is a real landmark for Irish angling and we hope to see more caught over the season.

It must have been the weather as a second boat from Kinsale had another species rarely encountered by anglers. Dan Lynch of Halfway Tackle and the Irish Boat Angling Team was fishing on the Silver Dawn out of Kinsale on Saturday when he had a hake. Other fish of note caught on the day were ling to 20lb, blue shark and some good whiting, cod, coalies and pollock.

Over at Courtmacsherry Mark Gannon tells us his anglers were getting some decent conger and also a juvenile skate amongst all the other regular ground fishing species.

Adrain Nowotynski of the Rod n Reel out of Union Hall was also making the most of the fine weather this week and reports some good blue shark fishing is being had at the moment. Yesterday they fished at anchor for the day and so a had a bit of ground fishing as well as the sharks, although the sharks were plentiful and kept things busy. Best was estimated at  110lb.

James Quinn reports another good week in Galway, with perfect water levels and a great run of grilse through the fishery giving anglers great sport, in spite of bright sunshine and high temperatures.

John McCarthy from landed 3 fish to 4.5lbs on fly, while father and son Steve and Mark Turner from the UK had a fish each on shrimp. Dublin angler Dave O’Reilly landed a 4.5lbs on fly. Tipperary man Jim Delahunty said he would not come back if he didn’t catch on his visit, presumably after a couple of blanks, but James now has to put up with him for while longer, after he landed a 5lbs grilse on fly. James says he doesn’t mind too much!

Waterford visitors Paul Whelan 3 fish and Eamon Power had 5 fish to 4.5lbs between them, all on fly, while Mike Daly had a lovely 7lbs fish, also on fly. Local angler Eoin Trill had a 4.5lbs grilse on fly, while Limerick man Gerry Hartigan landed 2 grilse to 5.5lbs on shrimp. The 6th was a bumper day with 19 fish. – Dublin men Gary Rogers had 2 fish of 4 and 5lbs on fly, and Dermot Quinlan had a 4lbs grilse on shrimp.

Mask quiet in Mediterranean conditions but dry fly providing good evening sport

Ronan Cusack says there was not much to report from Lough Mask this week as the majority of visiting anglers have now returned home, looking more like they spent the mayfly in Tenerife rather than Lough Mask!

Local angler and angling guide Michael Vahey fished with D. Fitzpatrick from Finland last week and they had a total of 12 trout on dries for the week (best fish 2lbs, all returned). Cameron from the United States Fished with Nick Craig from the UK for a day on Wednesday last and they had 5 fish on a combination of dries and buzzer (best fish 2.25lbs, all returned). Gerry O’Brien, Ballinrobe also reported doing well on dries in the evening once the sun went down and temperatures dropped. Ronan Cusack and Mark Rogan had 3 on Sunday on nymphs and small dries (best fish 2.25lbs, all returned).

The outlook for the coming few days is for more unsettled weather, so there is a possibility of a bit of good fishing over the weekend.

Spectacular early morning sport on Corrib in heatwave conditions

Anna Dawson from Scotland releasing a fine trout caught on a Caenis pattern
Anna Dawson from Scotland releasing a fine trout caught on a Caenis pattern

Early June Sunrise Banner Pic

This week’s banner photo shows the sun rising over Greenfields Bay on Saturday morning. A beautiful morning when I had the pleasure of watching pods of trout feeding on a large hatch of Caenis between 5am and 8am. After a poor mayfly season, it was a joy to see so many trout feeding hard, and indeed the old saying “The early bird gets the worm” is most apt when it comes to fishing on Corrib at this time of the year. Caenis fishing is really delicate stuff, with small dries, fine tippet and light rods the order of the day. The Caenis hatch very early, and it can all be over by 7am, but with the hot sunny weather we have been enjoying lately, this is the most pleasant and productive time of the day to fish anyway.

Declan Gibbons reports that the heatwave conditions affected the Annual Mayfly Competition held on Sunday by Cong Angling Club, with 27 rods participating and only two anglers weighing in trout! In first place was Dan O’Donovan with one fish for 1.9lbs and in second place was Domhnall Ryan.  Domhnall also won Best Junior Angler on the day.

Kevin Molloy of Baurisheen Bay Boat Hire, Guiding & Self Catering (087-9604170) reports on Cork man Harry Couch and his two sons, dapping for two days, having excellent sport landing 17 trout dapping with the best fish being 4lbs. Visiting anglers from Spain Stephen Walsh and Michelle Ursv enjoyed three days trolling on Lough Corrib catching a total of 12 trout, all released apart from two for their visit, one of which was a ferox of 13lbs and was sportingly released.

Basil Shields of Ardnasillagh Lodge, Oughterard (086-0869758) says there was less activity on the lake due to weather conditions and hatches and any clients he had out were all Caenis fishing. Northern Ireland angler Jimmy Johnston had 4 fish for his 1 day visit with the best fish being 4.5lbs. Dr. Terry Bradley from Lisburn had one fish on Caenis.

Also held in the Oughterard area was the Cathal Noone Memorial Cup (Heaviest Fish Competition) and the winner on the day went to Mike Faherty with one trout for 12.25lbs.

Galway angler Harold O Toole has been enjoying some excellent sport in the week gone by, catching 9 trout for 4 mornings on Caenis with the best fish being around the 3lbs mark on the lower lake.

Richard Molloy of Ballard Shore Boat Hire & Self Catering (087-2879339) reports a quieter week on the angling front with Ashbourne man Paul Geraghty catching one trout for 5lbs trolling.

In the Greenfields area on Sunday Paul Dignam, Ennis and Tuam angler Sean Naughton had 3 trout on dry may flies for their efforts in what was a very bright day with high temperatures.

Larry McCarthy at Corrib View Lodge, Glencorrib (087-9135222; www.corribangling.com) reported a huge improvement in fishing over the last week with great early morning sport. Larry was guiding a regular client from England and had 25 trout over 3 days with several fish over 4lbs and one over 5lbs, all caught on Caenis patterns. Anna Dawson from Scotland caught her first 2 trout both on small dry fly, one which weighed 4lbs 6oz. In total 6 anglers guided by corribangling.com over the week caught 47 trout! Not bad for short early morning sessions.

West Cork salmon rivers report

Reporting from IFI Macroom, Eileen Carroll has an update on the salmon fishing in West Cork…

RIVER ILEN

4 salmon landed for the week, 2 caught by tourist anglers from Wexford and the other two were landed by club members.  Best was 8lbs on a Flying C by one of the visiting anglers.

RIVER MEALAGH

No report.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.
