William Appleby, UK, with his first ever Irish salmon
Fishing on the River Moy picked up only slightly during the past week. Water levels dropped with angling conditions improving further but angling effort was still low.
William Appleby, UK, with his first ever Irish salmon
On the Ridge Pool, flyangler William Appleby, UK, caught his first Irish salmon ever, a nice 9 lbs. fish!
Paul Whelan, Co. Kildare, had one at 6 lbs. on bubble & fly on Gannon’s, while David McIvor, Northern Ireland, caught a grilse on the Foxford Fishery. David’s fish took a worm. A cracking thirteen pounder was caught by Luxemburg angler, Jacques Montaldo, on the Cloongee Fishery while spinning.
Further upriver, on East Mayo, regular visitor, Stuart Longhurst, Germany, proved that flyfishing can be very productive. Stuart had a total of three grilse averaging 4.5 lbs.
The ‘Lakelands & Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championship’ is match fishing in Ireland at it’s very best! Taking place from September 7th to 11th with a Guaranteed Prize fund for top ten Pairs of €20,650 and £1500 tackle prizes for the winners from DAIWA.
Sponsorship to the value of £6,500. 100% payout
Day one…
We were out and about at Section 3 Fermanagh for Day One and quality fish have made the difference on these venues. As is the norm for good fishing pre-baiting of the venue was essential and DCAL Inland Fisheries gave us a hand to produce ground bait in bulk to get the feed out there on these previously unfished sections.
Andy Leathers got his campaign off to a good start with 13.850kg from peg 3. Casting to 50m with a base-weighted cage feeder and double red maggot n a 90cm trace, the Browning Hotrods angler sneaked enough to see off Dean Barlow’s, Drennan International net of bigger fish. Philip Jackson showed his class with a 75 fish net from peg 9. his 18.120kg was top weight of the day overall, but only scratched the surface of how good Magho can be.
Lower Lough Erne is an impressive body of water and the Magho Jetty shore is known for some great bream catches of up to 50kg. it’s not currently available to the every day angler but a fish survey being carried out by the anglers during the championships will contribute to the Lough Erne Management Plan which we hope will bring better access for all in the future.
The organisers would like to thank DCAL Fisheries and the Ulster Angling Federation for the special dispensation awarded to use this venue this September.
Day two…
No change at the top of the pairs, with two-times winners Cathal Hughes and Philip Jackson still ahead of a reshuffled chasing pack.
In the Daiwa Cup, Dean Barlow hits the top today from Brackley Lake (Cavan 4), on peg 5. Dean’s 18.825kg came on the pole, which after most weights coming to the feeder, will give others pause for thought.
THE DAIWA CUP
The fantastic sponsorship from DAIWA of vouchers to the value of £6,500 supplements a 100% payout for this optional match running inside the Pairs. With 5/4 peg sections paid by default there is the opportunity for everyone to pick up some money with 82 out of the 84 competing anglers entered.
Ken O’Neill in IFI Limerick reports on the pike competition news in East Clare…
In Kilkishen area 17 anglers were fishing a competition had a modest catch of 12 pike. the best of these was 11.2 lbs caught by John Punch.
An interclub competition on the 18th October has been organised by the Lough Graney Angling Club. This is an open competition. Teams of 6 are entered into the competition for €60 per team. There is also an optional €5 pool for the biggest Pike caught that many anglers will also take part in.
Eileen Carroll Murphy IFI reports from the River Bandon for the week ended 9th September 2015:
River Bandon
Water levels dropped off quickly last week and so too did the run of salmon with one or two fish reported. There are a few sea trout being caught at night on the lower reaches.

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane:
02/09/15 Straight to the action in the Salmon department, UK angler Mr. John Fielding, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 12 lbs Salmon on the troll and finished their day off with 3 fine Sea Trout ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. and just for the record all the Sea Trout were put back to fight the elements of the spawning streams. Now to the C&R fly department, Mr. David Burton of the UK, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 3 Sea Trout to his rod, ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. Now to the evening shift, this evening Mr. Liam Ellis and Mr. John Holsted, caught a fine 5 ½ lbs. Sea trout, which was sportingly put back to fight another day. Now to the apology department, on the 29/08/15 I went to the Higher lakes where there was some great fishing but when it came to the reporting or I should say the spelling of the anglers good names I failed miserably in my duties so lets put the record straight and I will let the plaintiffs put the record straight in their words. Hi, great report however both names mentioned were misspelled. Matt Whiteley should be Matt Whitelaw and Tony Gibbins should be Toby.
03/09/15 The only angler to register with his fly rod was UK Angler Mr. David Burton, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 1 Junior, which was sportingly put back and for the rest of the angling community there was no comment. Wind NNW light with reasonable cloud cover.

06/09/15 Lough Currane was like a Millpond and my Noble Anglers scored nil from the pond, if there was some reel action they failed miserably in their duties in the reporting their catches so remember its not what Lough Currane and the Waterville Fishery can do for you, its what you can do for Lough Currane and the Waterville Fishery and the local business. Contact : [email protected] To register your interest www.loughcurrane.com07/09/15 Again Lough Currane was like a Mill pond for the majority of the day and in the words of Local gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com in a text message sent at 14.21pm, its looking unlikely that photographs will be required this evening, unless these fish have a dramatic change of heart, well thankfully for his client, Mr. David Burton, did see a bit of action this evening, he caught 2 Juniors which were sportingly put back and considering all the elements were against my Noble Angler’s, David and his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com did well and for the rest of the angling community it was all quiet on the SW front. The wind eventually did get up late this evening from the South with bright sunshine all day.
08/09/15 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong SE wind. We start in the hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Marc’s Fly Fishing Team from Belgium, caught 3 Sea Trout, their weights are as follows 2 lbs. 3lbs. and 5 lbs. Now we head West up the North Shore to the Bungalow and www.oshealoughcurrane.com UK anglers James and Tom Marriot, fly fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 4 Sea Trout ranging from Juniors up to 5 lbs. Another Hard Fighting Boyne Salmon Takes to the Air in an Attempt to Win Its Freedom
After a few hours fishing for himself on Saturday, local angling guide Peter Cunningham was back on the River Boyne over the last couple of days with four French anglers, none of whom had ever fished for salmon before and all first time visitors to Ireland.
The water level has continued to drop in recent days but there is a lingering tinge of colour that is finding it very hard to clear. Armed with licences, permits and spinning, fly and shrimping tackle, Pascal Mellet, Lionel Fahy, Christophe Klein and Tom Lunt visited the Rossin, Slane and District Anglers waters just outside Drogheda on Monday 7th September. Prior to fishing on Day 1, Peter established each anglers fishing method of choice and explained the technical aspects of each of the techniques to be used to the group.
Peter Cunningham Explains the Techniques to be used to the Group
Then it was off to the river to try and catch one of the River Boyne’s hard fighting salmon. Within the first two hours of fishing Lionel was into a very nice fish on shrimp which made a number great runs but just as the net was being readied the fish took the line under a large rock and gained its freedom, much to the chagrin of all. Still, Lionel was extremely happy with having hooked into a big Boyne salmon at his first attempt.
Lionel Fahy Into A Big Boyne Fish Yesterday With Guide Peter CunninghamA Powerful Tail Splash Shows How Determined This Fish Was to Win Its Freedom
Not long after this Christophe hooked into fish number two, this time on spinner but again the fish was lost after a number of powerful kicks on the surface. They say, third time lucky and so it was for Pascal Mellet who hooked into fish number three. A lovely fish, that made a number of powerful runs and jumps but despite a valliant attempt to win its freedom it was eventually taken to the net and landed. A quick weighing of the fish on a scales, by a helpful club member recorded a weight of 13lb 9oz. The fish was then returned quickly to the water and assisted to recuperate before being let off to continue its upstream journey.

As the day finished the lads were delighted with their experience and all were looking forward to Day 2.
For Day 2, Peter had decided that a change location would give the lads a better feel for the full fishery and fishing was focussed on a number of beats further upstream. The colour was still in the water but not long into the session Pascal was into his second fish of the trip and was again taken on shrimp. This fish was expertly played and landed by Pascal and weighed around 7lbs. Unfortunately, this was the only fish of the session but the group were not at all disappointed as the fishing had far surpassed any expectations that they had.
We hope to see the lads back soon and wish them well on their trip West!!

Owen McEnteggart of Dundalk with cracking Lough Lene Rainbow
Angling guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports from Lough Lene:
Lough Lene will close for trout fishing on the last day of September, but there is talk of an extension, which will see Lene close like Owel, and Ennell on October 12th. Anyway it was screaming reels on Lene last week for local and visiting anglers alike. Earlier in the week reports of rainbow trout up on eight pounds had anglers pricking up their ears. John “Tosh “Grimes on Ginnell Terrace had a whopper just over 8lbs, unfortunally I got no photograph of this super fish.
Owen McEnteggart of Dundalk with cracking Lough Lene Rainbow
Owen McEnteggart was back in Mullingar for a few days, and really enjoyed his few days on Lene and in the Annabrook House Hotel. Owen from Dundalk has featured in our angling slot over the years, and has many friends and family members here in Mullingar. We had some cracking rainbows on Lene all caught on dry flies tied by Owen, and we had a few daddy Longlegs that the fish simply could not resist. Also back on Lene was our pal Marty Smith from Macklesfield near Manchester in England. Marty is a member of Lough Lene Anglers, and always tries to get over for a few days before the season ends. We only had a few days but boated some lovely brown and rainbow trout also on dry fly. The best fish rattled the nets at 4.96lbs.
