Angling guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports from Lough Lene:
Lough Lene will close for trout fishing on the last day of September, but there is talk of an extension, which will see Lene close like Owel, and Ennell on October 12th. Anyway it was screaming reels on Lene last week for local and visiting anglers alike. Earlier in the week reports of rainbow trout up on eight pounds had anglers pricking up their ears. John “Tosh “Grimes on Ginnell Terrace had a whopper just over 8lbs, unfortunally I got no photograph of this super fish.
Owen McEnteggart was back in Mullingar for a few days, and really enjoyed his few days on Lene and in the Annabrook House Hotel. Owen from Dundalk has featured in our angling slot over the years, and has many friends and family members here in Mullingar. We had some cracking rainbows on Lene all caught on dry flies tied by Owen, and we had a few daddy Longlegs that the fish simply could not resist. Also back on Lene was our pal Marty Smith from Macklesfield near Manchester in England. Marty is a member of Lough Lene Anglers, and always tries to get over for a few days before the season ends. We only had a few days but boated some lovely brown and rainbow trout also on dry fly. The best fish rattled the nets at 4.96lbs.
