Lots of rain put the River Boyne well up last week but when you have travelled all the way from South Africa there is no turning back, is there? So it was for Nick Marvin and Dave Gibbon who were visiting Ireland last week and were booked in for a day of salmon fishing on the River Boyne with local angling guide Peter Cunningham. Unfortunately, they arrived just as the water levels had risen and got very coloured due to the recent torrential rain.
Undeterred by the less than favourable conditions, Nick and Marvin visited the lower Boyne with Peter to have a go for one of the rivers legendary salmon. Despite the best efforts of all concerned the salmon failed to oblige on the day and no fish were taken during the lads flying visit. Despite the lack of a fish both Nick and Dave were delighted with their day on the Boyne and were very taken with the river and the location. Fishing is sure to improve again when water levels have dropped and cleared a bit.
Peter Cunningham is one of the North East’s top angling guides. If you fancy a days guided fishing for salmon, sea trout, wild brown trout, pike or bass, then why not give him a call or drop into him for a chat in the Drogheda Angling Centre, Boyne Shopping Centre, Drogheda.

It was the first fish caught of the trip and ripped nearly 300yd of line from the reel on the first run. They had a number of tope after that and also some great cod and pollack on light gear.

A nice clean fish released by Glen Harmon on Woodstream yesterday
As predicted by Ian Powell of Blackwater Lodge the fishing picked up for the weekend. Things started to to improve on Friday when his anglers had six salmon to 12lb, mainly on spinner with one on fly…
The 12lb. fish was taken by Dave McDowell (N. Ireland) – his Pesonal Best – and there was a First Ever Salmon for Jerome Guiry (Dungarvan).
The fishing continued to improve on Saturday and ten fish to 11lb. were caught. The 11lb. salmon was taken by Michael Foran (Kinsale) and Glen Harmon had an 8½lb fish. Both fell to fly.

There was no rain at all on Saturday and so fishing was rather challenging on Sunday. There were few fish moving today & no influx of fresh fish seen. Seven fish for the day including six from our very top beat 28 miles upriver.
There were few fish moving on Monday, the last day of August, throughout most of the river though 40-50 were seen on one upper beat where 3 were caught. Total for the day was five.
We have caught 123 for August & 368 for the season to date. The fish/rod day for August is 0.4 which is nevertheless rather good.
There are very high (4.1m) tides for the next 2 days, which should help to bring some fresh fish in. Fishing remains challenging butthe weather will be dry and stable for the coming week making for very good and very pleasant conditions.
Wicklow Boat Charter skipper Kit Dunne gets a first hand view of what some Bull Huss had for dinner. He reports:
We’re getting some fine well marked Bull Huss lately up to 14lb. Ranging from 5lb to 14lb with varied coloration depending on the grounds, beautiful fish, until they throw up on the deck almost every time. Had one lately throw up 3/4 mackerel and an Octopus 13″ long.
Daniel O Kelly had this beauty on a recent trip when we landed 4 Huss and 6 Tope.
