Rory Burke got his first salmon, a 4lb fish caught on fly, from Copal Lake

27/8/15 Lough Currane has a new King of the fly in the making, 15 year old Rory Burke of the UK and the Grandson of  renowned UK and Waterville Angler Mr. Kevin McGillicuddy, caught his first ever Salmon a 4lb fish onthe fly, from Copal Lake. His Gillie MD was telling me that this was his first time ever fly fishing and young Rory finished his day off with a fine 1 lbs. Sea Trout. There was no comment from the rest of the Lough Currane anglers and for good reason, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to work out why, yes you have it they failed again. Wind SW fresh to strong with showers.

28/8/15 Lough Currane was on the quiet side in all departments. Wind W fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

sea trout
Matt Whiteley with his specimen sea trout

29/8/15 We start on the upper Lakes and Lough Derriana and the C&R fly department,  in the last few days Mr. Tony Gibbins and party from Co Mayo have had fantastic fishing with 80 Juniors caught and a few nice Sea Trout in the 2 lbs class. Not satisfied with that, they came down to the Big Lake/Lough Currane and showed the rest of the angling community how it should be done in style. Yes – you have it, today, fishing in the hired out boat department of www.oshealoughcurrane.com, Mr. Matt Whiteley of Westport Co Mayo, caught a cracker of a specimen 6.56 lbs. Sea Trout out at the Sisters on a size 8 Alexandra fly, on a floating line.  Just for the record Matt would have released this fine fish but again sadly this fish was damaged in the gills. Staying with the Co Mayo anglers in the last few days they have had some good baskets of Sea Trout taken from Lough Currane from Junior class up to 2 lbs. For the rest of the Lough Currane anglers there wasn’t a murmur from their reels or their mobiles today but at least the paparazzi was in full swing on his Silver wing Honda. Wind SW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover at times.

30/8/15 Lough Currane was all quiet on the SW front in all departments and to be fair to my Noble Anglers there wasn’t  much wind, and what wind was there was light and variable with plenty of sunshine.

31/8/15 Straight to the Bungalow and the C&R Sea Trout fly department. Mr. Arnold Slater, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 5 Sea Trout, ranging from Junior class up to 4 lbs. Now we cut right across the Lake to Coffee’s Bay. Local Angler Mr. Liam Ellis caught and released a fine Sea Trout on the drift, in the 3 lbs. class.  Wind calm this morning and fresh Northerly in the afternoon with reasonable cloud cover with the odd light shower.

1/9/15 There wasn’t any white horses on Lough Currane today and for good reason it was like a Millpond (not Milk pond), even though there was odd breeze  coming from the North. The only boat to register was Mr. John Fielding, who caught 1 Trout while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. In the words on one prominent Gillie, Its hard out there and there is no argument to that.

That is your ration from the opening days on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Ardee A Team win All Ireland Inter Club Champions

Jimmy Conway with a nice 9 pounder

On Sunday 30 August 26 four man teams fished the All Ireland Inter Club Team Challenge. Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs (IFPAC) has the full report below…

We fished a 10 mile stretch of the Erne around Belturbet. Both banks were fished so around 20 miles of bank was on. The venue was divided into 4 sections. Each bank upstream and downstream from the bridge in the town. Each 4 member team had to divide up so that one team member was fishing each of the 4 sections. Anglers could wander around but their catch had to be witnessed by a member of another club.

Ardee
INTER CLUB CHAMPS Sean Markey, Jody Kiernan, Ronan Murray and Alan Heasley

The river was up a couple of feet from normal level due to all the recent rain. Fishing would probably have been better without the extra water but still 238 pike to 11 lbs 14 ozs were caught and released.

It was rather disappointing that several landowners blocked access to competitors with one passing some racist comments to one of our anglers.

Results were calculated in the Yukon Bar on the main Street, where competitors enjoyed large quantities of sandwiches, cocktail sausages and chips. When the final tot was tallied it was a photo finish between the Ardee A team and the Phoenix A team.

  • 1st Ardee A 23 pike 48-10
Jody Kiernan, Sean Markey, Alan Heasley and Ronan Murray.
  • 2nd Phoenix A 14 pike 45-15
Pat Gorman, Jason Gorman, Ibar Condron and Sean Condron
  • 3rd Team Slovakia 15 pike 38-02
Andrej Duran, Marek Ceman, Bachlak Jaroslav and Robert Sloboda.

Andrej Duran had the best individual bag.

Lough Allua fishing well, pike to 102cm landed

97cm pike
Novice anglers Jean and Logan had 8 pike to 97 cm

Pike anglers having been enjoying the sport on Lough Allua in recent days. Greg Latour has the details…

pike
Stu caught 8 pike of which 3 made his top 3 – the biggest was 102cm

27 August: Stu, my guest on today’s guided fishing trip on Lough Allua , was delighted with a total catch of 8 pike. He managed to beat his PB 3 times today , the biggest fish, caught on a rubber shad, measured 102cm. The weather today included lashing rain and gusty winds but the pike certainly didn’t mind.

97cm pike
Novice anglers Jean and Logan had 8 pike to 97 cm

30 August: Logan and Jean brought 8 pike to the boat and many more were lost. The biggest pike measured 97 cm , barely missing the meter mark, while another few measured between 80 and 90 cm. Jean and Logan never caught pike before , so they really enjoyed a lively fishing day on Lough Allua.

Lough Allua ranks amongst the top pike fishing waters of Ireland, regularly producing pike of 20 and 30 lbs. and still it is one of the least known pike venues on the island .

NCFFI All Ireland Junior Champions of 2015

bream
In general catches were modest but some good bream helped one angler steal a lead

On Saturday 29th August, Lakelands Angling Ballinamore, Co Leitrim played host to Ireland’s premier junior coarse angling event, the All Ireland Championships. NCFFI has the full report…

The participating anglers were divided into separate sections, Novice, U14, U18 and for the first time U23’s. The inclusion of the U23 section is to recognise the hard work and dedication of those who have applied for and had the opportunity to represent Ireland on the International stage over the past few years. Until now when our junior anglers reached 18 they were forced to take part in senior only events causing some to walk away from the sport. The inclusion of a U23 section aims to encourage a transition for our young anglers from under 18 to senior, where confidence and skills can be improved, and as with so many other NCFFI initiatives we hope to see clubs and others follow this example.

bream
In general catches were modest but some good bream helped one angler steal a lead

47 young hopefuls met at Smyths Siopa Ol & Tae to draw their pegs at 10am having travelled far & wide across Ireland. There was great representation from our clubs; Killinarden Angling Initiative – KAI, Dublin the recently affiliated Carraickmacross Coarse Angling and Youth Development Cub, Monaghan, Kildare’s Royal Enfield CAC and Erne Anglers Club from Enniskillen.

As everyone registered they were presented with a free pint of maggots and castors courtesy of Irish Bait and Tackle Limited and a kilo of Sensas ground bait thanks to Sensas Ireland. As is the norm for NCFFI events everyone was required to dip their nets and the dipping station was provided by Inland Fisheries Ireland on the bank for convenience.

All sections were pegged on the mighty Lough Garadice which boasts parking behind your peg and toilet facilities on most shores. Grassy Bank was the venue for the Novices, with the U14’s on the Deeps of Church Shore with the U 18’s on Cully’s Shore. The U23’s were tasked with the more difficult Haughton’s Shore. High winds and showers of rain made moth methods more difficult for the juniors.

The match was fished over 3 hours, something we may extend for the U23’s in future and there was much excitement with word of bream from Cully’s. Weigh-in was quickly done and everyone headed back to Smyth’s for a warm-up and sausage & chip supper.

Fresh water is an ever more valuable and sought after natural resource. The island of Ireland possesses an aquatic heritage which is unique in Europe. Packed into a land area of just 84,000 km2 is a vast array of loughs, rivers and streams. Some of the bolder strewn, brassy river channels flash by for all to see; some are hidden from view and furtively skirt unnoticed along the edges of the hedgerows. Still others flow largely beneath our feet, only appearing above ground for tantalisingly short periods. Our lakes are shallow, often wind swept and amongst the most highly productive still-waters in the world. Easily damaged by over-enrichment, they demand careful and thoughtful stewardship. During our course we will examine this unique resource: its sources and origin, its contribution to biological diversity and its importance for the landscape and for humans. The course will teach the basics of becoming a Freshwater Detective and how, using the presence or absence of specific insects or fish, to read a river corridor or lake shore. This in turn will ensure that students can become guardians of this unique Irish resource. The course will comprise six talks and four field visits.

A wet blustery week makes the anglers work hard on Delphi

Delphi 1

David McEvoy from the Delphi Fishery reports from a wet and blustery Delphi:

Well the blue skies didn’t last for long here at Delphi or anywhere else in the country for that matter since my last update. We have had 79.5mms (3.12”) of rain in the interim. The river has rarely fallen below 35 which made for lovely water but the fish were far from cooperative. There were also a few days were Doolough in particular was unfishable due to high winds.

Delphi 1As a result ten fish were landed in the intervening period. First off the mark on the 16th was Hugh Brennan who landed a nice fish of approx. 3.5lbs at Glencullin Point on Doolough on a Silver Stoat. Hugh was fishing with Peter Morris and they proved to be the dynamic duo for the week. They had two on the 17th, both off fin. The first was taken by Peter in Salmon City weighing in at 4lbs7ozs on a Delphi Collie and Hugh had the second, also from Salmon City of 6lbs7ozs on a Cascade. Brendan Keenan also had a nice fresh fish off the Schoolhouse on the river of 4lbs on a Silver Stoat.

Peter Morris had his second on the 19th at the Harbour on Doolough of approx. 4lbs again on a Delphi Collie. He had another from Salmon City on Fin on the 20th. The fish was again taken on a Delphi Collie and weighed in at 4lbs12ozs.

Hugh Brennan managed to land two on the 21st from the river. The first was taken in the Quarry pool on an Ally Shrimp and weighed in at 8lbs6ozs. The second also on an Ally Shrimp was from the Grilse pool and weighed in at 4lbs5ozs.

Delphi 2The past week has been slow with three landed. David Allcutt had two. The first was a nice fish of 6lbs2ozs in the Stream on Fin taken on a Silver Stoat and the second was from Cooleens of approx. 5lbs again on a Silver Stoat. The third was taken by Niall Green at the Black Rock on Glencullin of approx. 3lbs on a Red Assed Green Peter.

We also had our sea trout specialists Tom and Shirley Morrison last week but I’m afraid they only managed to land four. Sea trout so far this year have been poor and well down on last year, not only here but on a number of fisheries.

With September starting tomorrow hopefully we will start to see more activity with the salmon as they often tend to become more aggressive later in the year.
