Over 19 salmon and 14 sea trout in last 7 days at Currane

Kevin and Brian with their catch of the day.

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane:

6/8/15 There was a big flood yesterday and Lough Currane was more on the quiet side today for the majority anglers but www.oshealoughcurrane.com reported that one boat did catch at least two Salmon on the fly. Wind light westerly, with reasonable cloud cover.

7/8/15 Mr. Paddy Barrett takes the headlines and for good reason he caught two salmon to his boat and for the rest of the angling community there was no comment. Weather there was bright  sunshine with a light West wind blowing down the lake all day.

8/8/15 There was some good Salmon Fishing on Lough Currane today. My catch of the day goes to Scottish Anglers, Michael and Julia Wigan, they caught a fine 6 ½ lbs Salmon on the troll and their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com was telling me that this is was their first time fishing on Lough Currane and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Staying in the trolling department a Guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley, caught a fine Grilse. Now to the fly department, a guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 2 Salmon. In the Sea Trout department an Angler fishing the South side caught a few nice Juniors before the Lake got on the wild side and talking of wild, the wind was SW fresh to strong with rain all afternoon.

9/8/15 There was great fishing on the Waterville Fishery today and here are the facts of the day. I start with catch of the day and that goes to 9 year old Master Brian Hoare, who caught his first ever 4 ½ lbs.  Salmon on the fly and his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com said fair play to young Brian, he played his Salmon like a pro. All I can say is may it be the first of many and staying with Brian, his Father Mr. Kevin Hoare, caught a fine 3 ½ lbs. Sea Trout on the fly, plus he told me that they lost a Salmon and rose another.

Now to the Sea Trout department. Michael Jones, fishing out of the Bog, had 5 Juniors  and I met a couple of nice Sea Trout. Now we head upstream to the upper Lakes and Lough Cloonaghlin, Mr. Jim Sayers and his good friend John caught a fine 4 ½  lbs. Hen Sea Trout and a nice Sea Trout of 1 ½ lbs. and also caught a good few Brown Trout and just for the record all their fish were returned to fight another day. Anglers take note. Plus they were all caught on the fly.

On that note, we will take off from Lough Cloonaghlin and land safely on the Banks of the River Inny. Mr. Noel Clancy of Kildare and Waterville caught a cracker of a 13 lbs. Salmon on the fly and in the past week, Dr. Derry Gibson caught a fine 9 lbs. Salmon on the Inny again caught on the fly. On the World Famous Butlers Pool and of www.watervillegolflinks.ie  local Angler Mr. Kevin O’Shea caught two fine Grilse on the fly. Wind SW light and overcast all day.

10/8/15 There was some good all round fishing from the Waterville Fishery. Local Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a fine 6 ½ lbs. Grilse on the troll. Now we cut across the Lake to the North side and the Bungalow, Arthur Samios aged 14 from Sydney Australia with his 7lb salmon caught on the troll while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Junior Scully. Now we head for the Upper Lakes and Lough Cloonaghlin, Mr. Kevin Lavery of Killarney, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 2 Brown Trout both in the 1 ½ lbs. class and finished his day off  with two Sea Trout ranging from 2 lbs. up to 3 lbs. Yes you have it, we take flight across the Valley to the River Inny, Mr. Ivor O’Connor, caught a fine 6 lbs Salmon caught on a Park Shrimp Micro Tube Fly. Mr. Sion Brain of www.kbfishingireland.com caught a fine Grilse on the world famous Butlers Pool and of www.watervillegolflinks.ie. Wind WNW fresh with good cloud cover.

11/8/15 All quiet on the SW front and with little to no wind and bright sunshine that’s not surprising and if there were any catches of some sort my noble Anglers failed to report their manipulations. Just for the record there was a light breeze from the west this evening.

12/8/15 Lough Currane was like a mill pond with bright sunshine and with all the odds against my Noble Anglers, Lough Currane came up trumps. First in the striking zone was French Angler, Mr. Ludovic Tessier of Orleans France, who caught a fresh 10 lbs. Salmon on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and just for the record they lost two more. Now we head for the West end and the Bog. Local Angler Mr. Gerard Cronin caught a fine 5 lbs. Grilse on the troll and by the time he got back to the Bog this evening his Noble Salmon was half way to Dublin. On his arrival back at the Bog he was greeted my a Noble Fishery Officer and he asked Gerard did he have any luck. Gerard replied caught one and its on its way to Dublin City with its blue tag intact. Weather as already stated.

That is your ration from the opening days on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Good salmon and sea trout fishing during the rains on Owenmore Fishery

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

13/08: We had great fishing during the wet weather on both the river and lakes. We had a good run of grilse and we had salmon caught up to 12 lbs. The lakes fished well also. We have more juniors in the system than we have had ever before and it is not uncommon to have 20 of them a day in the lakes.

The nights are cold for this time of year with temperatures dropping to as low as 5 and 6 degrees with the result that the night fishing is shorter than usual. Sometimes the rise only lasts for about 10 mins. The good news is that there is more rain forecast for the middle of next week with maybe a light fall over the week end.

Ian Powell of the Blackwater Lodge gives us a report on how the week progressed on the Munster Blackwater:

12/08: The weekend saw the three Best Days of the Season with 15, 18 & 14 fish caught respectively, but the last 3 days have been much quieter.

Conditions: No rain in the catchment for the last few days. The forecast is now dry right through until the end of next week with some rain on Sunday & Tuesday. Today was a very bright hot sunny day. he upper river at Millstreet is falling steadily. The clarity is at least 3 feet.

At Killavullen the river is also falling slowly & is at 1.20 this evening. Excellent fly height & clarity which is ~3 feet & slightly peaty. The Ballyduff gauge is down to 0.31m by nightfall. Again excellent fly height & clarity which is ~3 feet & slightly peaty.

Water temperature at Ballyduff: 12.6ºC / 54.6ºF.

Catches: Sunday was the Third Best Day of the Season. Fourteen fish to 11lb. were caught. Seven fell to fly, four to spinner & three to shrimp. The water is fining off to superb fly order. Best at 11lb. was taken by Frank Ryan on the lower river & there were more better fish than in previous days with fish of 9, 8 & four 6 pounders caught. One rod landed four on the fly.

Dan Hawker
Dan Hawker about to release the Biggest Fly-caught Salmon
at the Lodge for 2015.
He caught it on a small Cascade at the Hut on Kents. This fish wins Dan the Catch of the Week.

The last 3 days have been much quieter than the previous 3 when 47 fish were caught for 42 rod days. On the 9th., we passed the 300 fish mark for the season. Two grilse were caught on the tenth & then yesterday four fish were caught including the Second Best Fish this year which is also the largest fly-caught fish of the season. It was an extremely fresh 13 pounder which was landed by 19 year old Dan Hawker on Kents on the lower river. He released the fish.

Today was very hot & bright with just a few rods out. The river was quiet and no fish were caught.

We already have 67 fish caught for August & 312 for the season to date.

Prospects: Should be good in the coming days if the weather is not so sunny.

Availability: No problem for rods & accommodation at the moment.

Some great fishing on the Bandon over the weekend

5lb grilse
Alvey Kemp with his first ever salmon, a lovely 5lb grilse

On Friday morning the Bandon River was still very high and fairly coloured but the expectation locally was that it would be good for spinning as levels dropped.

By Sunday the river was at 0.31m, a beautiful height after the recent flood. The Bandon Angling Association tell us that they had reports of half a dozen grilse caught plus a few more lost over the last couple of days. One fish in particular was estimated to weigh in the high teens of pounds before breaking the unfortunate fisherman’s fly leader.

It wasn’t all hard luck stories though. There were some lovely catches were made over the weekend along the whole length of Bandon Angling Association club waters. Members report that the average size of fish is increasing as the autumn run kicks off.

5lb grilse
Alvey Kemp with his first ever salmon, a lovely 5lb grilse

One angler who was delighted with the fishing was Alvie Kemp, fishing with Peter Aspinwall on the Kilcoleman Fishery. Alvie caught his first salmon ever after a couple of years of effort. The fish came to a Stoats Tail variant tied by guide Peter. Peter had some good fishing himself and managed a 7lb salmon.

Another angler also caught his biggest salmon ever on the Bandon River on Sunday. The fish weighed in at 15lb and was  caught on homemade fly – a traditional single pattern. The angler said it was an incredible battle with the fish going down to the backing on his fly reel three times. To add to the drama he had no landing net but luckily another angler near by had one and did the honours.

Jason Nash of http://savagefishing.blogspot.ie/ blogs that he caught and released a couple of grilse earlier last week while spinning during the high water. Sunday was a good day for Jason too and he had an 11lb fish on a small cascade. Moments later he lost a second even bigger salmon… “With line fully extended, I had a lovely take on a small cascade pattern. A great fight ensued and after some hairy moments I slipped the net under a lovely 11lb fish. Moments later another, bigger salmo salar smashed my fly. Alas, after a few slow, deep and stubborn runs it shook the hook following some violent surface thrashing. Indeed, isn’t that why it’s called fishing and not catching!? At least prospects for the future are looking very promising. ”

The River Bandon is a most scenic and prolific game fishing river flowing through some of the most picturesque country side in West Cork. It’s source is a few miles north west of Dunmanway from where it flows through that town and and on through the villages of Ballineen, Enniskeane, Kilcoleman, Bandon and Innishannon where it become tidal and widens into an estuary before meeting the sea past Kinsale.

Carrigaholt selection from blues to rays

Carrigaholt blue

Luke Aston from Carrigaholt Sea Angling has had a nice range of fish over the weekend both big and small.  Luke tells us:

On Saturday we had some people over from London to catch a Blue Shark but not for the first time this year the forecast was not great! Winds were to pick up to gale force by early afternoon. So nothing else would do but a first light start. We were back in by 1o o clock with 6 blues landed up to 80lb.

On Sunday Luke had better weather, however there was a fresh sw breeze so they stayed in the estuary.  Plenty doggies and rays and even a nice Tope for Sunday’s group.

More Quality Fishing on Lough Ramor, Co Cavan

A Longer Session Produced More Fish but Evening was Best

On Friday last the 7th August, the weather had settled down from the very unsettled conditions earlier in the week on Lough Ramor. The winds had dropped away completely and bright sunshine posed additional challenges due to the clear water. Feeder was the method of choice with 2lb hook-length and size 14 barbless hook.

Fishing was tough during bright periods of sunshine but bites were to be had when banks of cloud moved across the sun and a light ripple came on the water. Thankfully, most bites were good and deliberate with none of those finicky tip trembling bites that sometimes can be impossible to hook. Simple ground bait was the order of the day with brown crumb darken down with a black mix and single or double red maggot worked a treat.

The best of the fishing came during the last 2 hours of the session and as the light started to fade and the bites came thick and fast. Quality hybrids were the bulk of the catch with some really nice roach and an occasional skimmer and perch.

8 year old Gaius is an all round fisherman with great catches at Melview

Kevin Lyons reports from  Melview Fishing Lodge :

Gaius who is only 8 years old made the trip to Ireland with parents Claus and Britta from Germany for his very first fishing trip to Ireland, fishing various venues alongside their fishing guide Kevin Lyons. The first day produced some nice Pike for him, the second father and son give it a go on their own but the trip was cut short with high winds and bad weather but they still managed a couple that morning.

Day three was taking in some sites which included Dublin and it’s Zoo which was a great day for them, but on their return I could see that young Gaius could not wait to get out fishing again. The next day along with a few Pike Gaius caught some very nice Perch, he asked if he could catch some Tench and other course fish. This was made possible by taking him to a local fishery due to the high water levels at the time on a lot of the surrounding lakes, well what a great day this was for him producing some great Tench along with big Hybrids and Roach. So good was the day he returned the following day to catch some nice fish along with a nice bonus Carp, Kevin said the last day we went to a venue where I know there are some big Pike just so we could finish the holiday on a high.

The morning was very slow and the Pike did not come out to play until the afternoon with the largest being around 70cm, but Gaius did not care he just wanted to catch fish which is great to see in someone so young but for him it was just about the taking part. Kevin also said, after seeing his casting and fishing ability at such a young age I’m sure he is going to make a great angler in the future. Let’s hope he returns to Ireland to do some more fishing, thanks guys regards Kevin.

A show of bream at the annual Clones coarse angling festival

43 anglers took part in the annual competition which takes place over four days with a different lake venue in the Clones area of County Monaghan fished daily. Cold temperatures and freshwater in the Dromore system meant some venues such as Drumlona did not produce the expected catches but there was a general show of bream across the venues with Enniskillen angler Dave Slater netting four for his 25lb weight on on Bairds Shore to including a fine 6lb 14oz specimen.

Tony Kersley
Tony Kersley

In contrast Annaghmakerrig fished better than anticipated providing nets of small skimmers and a top weight of 32lbs for Cootehill angler Paul Leese on day one. But it was Enniskillen angler Tony Kersley, Tubertini whose consistent fishing throughout kept him at the top and winner of the 2015 festival. Cootehill’s Neil Mazurek’s 34lb catch on the final day placed him runner-up. Very well done to Seamie Winters for the catch of the festival and a massive 42lbs 5oz net of roach and hybrids from Drumlona Lough which placed him in third place.

  • 1st Tony Kersley 74lbs 4oz
  • 2nd Neil Mazurek 71lbs 15oz
  • 3rd Seamie Winters 68lbs 15oz
  • 4th Wayne Easter 58lbs 4oz
  • 5th Julian Kendrick 57lbs 15oz

The four days were unpredictable with the local venues of Bairds Shore, Drumlona Lough, Mullinary and Annaghmakerrig fishing very differently from usual but adding to the excitement. This popular and well organised festival attracts a high proportion of overseas anglers who come back year after year for the good fishing at this time. The weights were not as heavy as usual but the festival didn’t disappoint.
