Also fishing out from Carrigaholt, skipper Luke Aston reports a double figure bullhuss and a 42lb Tope in the estuary last Wednesday.  The following day the fishing was in full swing, lots of fine mackerel at the Loop and plenty of fish on the deep reefs with a good mix of species including a few fine Cod.

Lovely cod...

Luke tells us that this paticular group of anglers finished on Friday with a good Wrasse session and a lovely Ballan which was 2.09kg which was just a whisper under specimen size.

312 salmon on Ballisodare over last 2 weeks

A good 2 week’s fishing in Ballisodare with 312 caught (107 released) with all methods catching fish.
The fly and the worm are most productive taking about equal quantities of fish, with the prawn taking a nice number at the fall’s (cocktail of purple and natural has been working best).

Popular flies have proven to be the Cascade (all variations), Thunderflash, Arctic shrimp patterns, Stoats Tails and Willie Gunns (all on small size 12/14 trebles).

With plenty of fish throughout the system fishing has been good, with few anglers blanking.
Most fish landed are between 4 and 6lb, but best fish was caught by Mr Andrew Pearson who struck gold when he hooked a fine sea liced fish at the falls on Saturday July 25th weighing just a shade under 9lb, taken on a Posh Tosh.

On July 14th we had our annual “Kid’s Day” which went extremely well. We had a total of 60 entries for the day, with 60 kid’s catching fish, a great day by anyone’s standards.

Ballisodare Fishing Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved and everyone who helped out, along with IFI and our sponsors, without whom the day would not have been possible.
Another special thanks to Mr Ken Tucker of Douglas Jewellers in Carlow for sponsoring us with lovely trophies that put smiles on a lot of faces.

A few salmon on the Laune to 15lb last week

River Laune
Scarce but it is still possible to catch one on the fly. 5 lb grilse returned by chairman Stewart Stephens last evening.

Billy Downes of the Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association reports that as of Monday 27th July the water level has now fallen to a lovely 1.1m at the Laune Bridge or 1 foot 6 inches at Johnston’s. Still beautiful water for all methods and should last for the week unless it goes up more.  News of fish is still scarce enough but a few were caught during the week and a few met mostly grilse but there was one fish of 15 lbs landed from Johnston’s on the fly.

River Laune
Scarce but it is still possible to catch one on the fly. 5 lb grilse returned by chairman Stewart Stephens last evening.

On the good news front the netting in Cromane will end on Friday and the Laune nets will be operating four days per week from next Tuesday.  Hopefully this will improve anglers chances of a fish.

Beat 3: The Beat 3 water level is still nice and a few fish must be holding up there now.

Golfer O'Meara masters Moy to land seven salmon, Belfast Telegraph

O’Meara, fishing on the Moy system’s Ridge Pool with Sean McManmon, enjoyed a great day’s fly fishing landing seven salmon. The Moy system saw its best week of the season so far with over 650 salmon reported. The best of the fishing was again in the tidal section of the river and around and above Foxford town. However, the fisheries along the middle section also reported a slight increase in catch numbers…

Slurry suspected in Kilminchy fish kill, Leinster Express

Agricultural slurry is now suspected as the reason for a major fish kill in the lake at the centre of Portlaoise’s biggest housing estate. Last Friday July 17, Laois County Council officials were still working to trace the trail of what they suspect to be agricultural slurry. The pollution is coming from the direction of the Dublin road underground pipes into the lake. “We are currently carrying out tests in order to ascertain the source,” said Kieran Kehoe, Director of Services for infrastructure…

Satellites being used to solve Atlantic salmon mystery, CTV News Atlantic

Satellite tracking tags attached to salmon by Miramichi researchers have appeared on a beach in Greenland, but researchers are trying to find out why the fish aren’t returning. “We’re looking for the tracks that the fish are following and we’re trying to isolate the region where the mortalities are occurring,” says biologist Graham Chafe. “They’re going out to sea and they’re not coming back.” Scientists attached the tags to wild Atlantic salmon taken from the Miramichi River last year…

State must release salmon farm report, Irish Examiner

The Ombudsman has ordered the State to release a detailed report into a salmon farm accident which resulted in one of the largest ever losses of farmed salmon. Information Commissioner Peter Tyndall’s decision to overturn the Department of the Marine’s refusal to release the report follows a sustained campaign by environmentalists in West Cork arising out of the incident in Bantry Bay in 2014. Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE) last night hailed the success of their appeal as an important victory…

The Old Maestro plays Delphi and lands his 200th fish !

David McEvoy from the Delphi Fishery reports on a good weeks fishing at Delphi:

Catches here at Delphi have continued to be steady for the past week with 20 fish landed since my last update. Peter Eaton and Bob Hadden had excellent starts to the week with five between them and then of course John Mills landed his 200th Delphi salmon of the modern era.

Delphi - July 2015 1With perfect conditions on Sunday morning, the river running at 60, Peter Eaton was first off the mark with two, one of which was a beauty. His first was off the Grilse pool of 4lbs10ozs on a Willie Gunn and his second of 10lbs14ozs with sea lice was taken in the Whin pool, again on a Willie Gunn. It was a truly magnificent fish for this time of year and turned out to be the biggest of the week. Shauna Waterer (daughter of a former regular visitor, Bill Horne), managed to land a fish of 5lbs7ozs in the Whin pool on a Collie Dog and lost another. Her sister Julia lost three but made up for it later in the week.

Delphi - July 2015 3On Monday morning Bob Hadden had a session to remember, landing three and losing another five. His first two were in the Rock pool, both on a Collie Dog, weighing in at 2lbs9ozs and 4lbs6ozs. His third fish was from Morrisons, again on a Collie Dog and weighed in at 4lbs10ozs. Alexander Mills also had two, one a stale fish at Boat Point on Finlough of 7lbs12ozs on a Willie Gunn and a nice grilse of approx. 5lbs from the Turn pool also on a Willie Gunn.

Delphi - July 2015 2On Tuesday morning Julia Horne managed to land a fish of 4lbs5ozs from the Horseshoe on a Delphi Collie. Alexander Mills landed two, one from the Grilse pool of approx. 4lbs on a Red Shrimp and the second of 3lbs4ozs from Cooleens on a Willie Gunn. John Somerville also had one, from the Goat pool of 3lbs6ozs on a Willie Gunn. In the afternoon John Mills had a fish of 5lbs3ozs off Finlough on a Willie Gunn to make it number 198.

On Wednesday Bob Hadden had his fourth of the week, a nice fish of 4lbs5ozs from Boat Point on Finlough on a Cascade. John Somerville had his second, a fish of 3lbs8ozs from the Rock pool on a Delphi Collie.

Thursday belonged to the Old Maestro himself, John Mills who managed to land two fish off Finlough, both on a Willie Gunn. The first was a fairly fresh fish and weighed in at 9lbs and the second his 200th fish of the modern era weighed in at 7lbs11ozs. John started fishing here in the early 60’s and probably has another few along with the 200 and God only knows how many sea trout. Needless to say John was over the moon and it is just reward for a long standing customer and friend of Delphi. In my own opinion he is probably one of the most efficient anglers to fish here.

Delphi - July 2015 4Yesterday was a bit slower but I managed to keep the record going with a lovely grilse of 5lbs1.5ozs from the Deadmans on a Collie Dog.

Today was not an ideal fishing day but we managed to land two. Michael Van Merek (or Michael the Dutchman from Ballynahinch as he is more commonly known in these parts) had a lovely fish of 5lbs off the Deadmans on a Red Frances. Ian Jackson who is visiting from the USA managed to land his first ever salmon also. The fish was taken at Powder House Beach on Doolough on a Willie Gunn and weighed in at 3lbs7ozs.

There are still good numbers of grilse entering the system and this year it seems to be even more so than ever if you are in the right place at the right time you’ll get fish. In other words they seem to turn on and off, big time. The river is now below 30 but with more rain forecast tonight it should be in great order again for the coming days
