Portobello AC returns to Killykeen, 9.3kg of bream wins the day

Portobello AC report on their return to Killkeen after an 11 year hiatus…

Killykeen was once Portobello AC’s favourite venue and the club held its entire 2004 Spring League on the famous lake shore. But it had been 11 years since the club had last held a match at Killykeen so there was a welcome return for our latest club match.

The fishing was a bit patchy, with a noticeable lack of roach that is in common with many other venues this year. Alex Radu set out his stall for bream on the feeder at 40 turns and ran out the winner with 9.300kg, while Trevor Campbell took second with a couple of bonus bream for 3.890kg. Shay Dunlop Phelan took his usual specimen fish with a 2.250 bream.

Thanks to the local angling club for accommodating us on adjacent pegs and we look forward to an early return to one of the best match fishing stretches in the country.

Muckno Mania angling Festival finishes with a flourish

IADA reports on the Muckno Mania Festival which was fished over 5 days, finishing with a flourish on Sunday…

Coming into today’s fishing we wondered if Lee Klimczuk hang on and he didn’t just do that but instead he turned in another immaculate performance to put some light between himself and the field when the tot was done by the figures man Geoff Quinn tonight.

muckno-final2

Of the leading pack Lee was the sole competitor to hold and indeed consolidate his winning position with a catch of almost 15kgs from White Island. Finishing on 61.210 kgs for a winning weight and a lead of more than 6kgs, this man once again showed his class and justified fully his favourite tag throughout each day of the Festival. W.V.D Helm another who kept up a relentless pace throughout, had no off day and his in depth experience of this venue is beginning to take its toll on the high level fields now competing here. This man languished menacingly in 7th overnight and made his play today, with almost 16kgs and a fine 2nd place and a giant share of the spoils. Every day so far we had a charger and none more so than today in the shape of Piotr Horbinski, who is showing some serious Irish form in recent times. This young man with a brilliant 22kgs from peg 204 yellow island forged from 19th overnight to third spot and his collective earnings in doing so was in excess of €1,000, especially well done Piotr. Ray O’ Sullivan hung on in 4th place after a fine early weeks work that saw him threaten the lead more than once. That man again Kevin Johnson just never slackens and his move through the field was predictable and a thing to behold, culminating in a fine 15.22 kgs final day weight and a top 5 finish.

Making up the top 8 prize winners were the tenacious, irrepressible Tony Hopkins in 6th, the popular and efficient gentleman John Clapham in 7th and the luckless Rob Rowe, the week long top two prospect, who dropped back into 8th spot albeit with a good weeks pay-out on his first venture into the Muckno Festival scene.

Over 50 people attended the usual after Festival courtesy dinner at the Old Coach Inn and the competitors were loud in the praise of the venue and the Festival organisation, including the special courtesy treatment each day at the host venue the Old Coach Inn.

Chairman of the Carrickmacross/Castleblayney Municipal Council P.J O Hanlon from Carrickmacross presented the valuable prizes and thanked the ever increasing number of visiting anglers attending this and the other 6 Festivals now hosted on this fine venue annually.

Mark Pollard on behalf of the Anglers thanked the organisers, the council and IPB for their kind sponsorship of this event and for their continued support and assistance in making Lough Muckno the most sought after venue for Festival Angling now in Ireland.

We look forward to a hectic schedule for the remainder of the year with two Irish opens this weekend and then a succession of Festivals and matches until November.

We, the organisers at Lough Muckno Matches group, thank sincerely the IPB Diaspora fund and Monaghan Tourism for their continued sponsorship and support which is the lifeblood of events such as these and in doing so are responsible for delivering substantial economic benefit to the local and wider community.

Day 4 report

On Day 4 of our Muckno Mania Festival the Angling gods turned against us somewhat, with a change in direction of the seriously high wind, a drop in temperature and torrential rain added in the final hours, to dampen the high spirits on show in all sections. Other than theses few little inconveniences, all anglers seemed to brave the elements and the challenge, in the usual spirit of friendship and camaraderie. The actual consequence of course was the drop in the fish catch in almost all the cases, where good pegs needed to be exploited and not so good ones maximised, if our leader group were to stay in contention or consolidate further.

Lee Klimczuk held on grimly to top spot but with a reduced lead, now down to just 1kg, from the ever consistent Rob Rowe who continues to attack in 2nd place heading off 3rd by just 500grammes. It was indeed the move of the day here, from Ray O Sullivan with his 18kgs from erstwhile unfancied 153 Black Island, that is now causing some anxious moments, for the lead two, holding on with the smallest of margins. Well fancied John Clapham on peg 161 suffered more than most with this area collapsing in the changed conditions but his spirited performance and 7kgs ensures that he is still very much in touch, only 3 KGS adrift. Tony Hopkins and Rory O’ Neill turned in dogged performances to hold their positions on the leader board, followed closely by Willem V.D.Helm another 4th day placing’s climber. These three are definitely not without a strong chance in the battle for the podium, trailing by only 5kgs in all cases. Ominously for the first time this week K Johnson and Mark Pollard, two of the pre match favourites have made it into the top ten in 8th and 9th respectively and can go all the way tomorrow, with such fluctuating fortunes befalling the lead group.

Pete Jones makes up the top ten and with his wily tenacious graft, not to mention well seasoned skill, he is a sure bet for a good return on his hard earned cash.

John Fletcher and Neil Mallinsion might have played their strategic jokers early and the conditions in their zones punished today. However fortune favours the brave and they also can also challenge on the final day when we will see again, surprise weights from just about any peg.

With the Muckno Mania angling Festival gaining in reputation and prestige and with top level competitors being attracted, this Festival win will surely look good on any Angling CV in the future.

It’s still all to play for in the challenge to become Muckno Mania angling champion and there is also the small matter of reward, with the top ind prize of €2,000, the winner will realistically walk away with over €3,000 in all (pools daily overall sections).

Irish trout fly fishing youth and coaches enjoy master class at Carrigavantry

David Tantrum PRO of Waterford City and County Trout Angling Association sends us this wonderful photo of Frank Dempsey and the Irish trout fly fishing association youth team and their coaches. David tells us that they had a  two day master class on Carrigavantry to get them used to lake fishing and the experience of catching and landing trout of a much larger size than they were accustomed to when river fishing.

Coaches and team all enjoy Carrigavantry
Coaches and team all enjoy Carrigavantry

They managed to catch and return 25 trout up to 4 lbs. weight and had plenty of stories to tell about  the trout that broke them. They intend to have more practise sessions on the lake and have the makings of a very competent team and we will be following their results.  Thers’s no doubt  that we will see some of the faces eventually make the senior team and be representing Ireland in the Internationals.

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore. The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!

Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.

New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

Good catches of tench in Cavan

Kev Shore
Smile says it all...!

Kev Shore enjoyed some good coarse fishing in Cavan last week. He had some excellent tench from Bairds Shore in Cavan.  The fish weighed in between 4 and 6 pounds.  All caught on red maggot by Kev Shore (10) and Norman Guy (8) visiting from England.  Fish caught on a waggler by Kev and by a swingtip by Norm.  Fish were the peak in a good week of fishing in the many loughs of Cavan area.

Osgur Grive reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Erriff where they have some great catches in the last few days…

19 July: The river is at 1.4m today, with 4 fish caught so far today, in what has been an incredible 9 days for us with 59 salmon caught. Local man Peter Coyne, fishing on the Erriff & District Salmon & Trout Anglers Club day yesterday, had 3 fish the biggest of which weighed 10lb. Well done Peter!

The Erriff is a spate river, more noted for summer salmon and grilse fishing than for early season spring fishing. Spring salmon run the river in good numbers during May and well into June, although angling effort is usually low at this time of year. The grilse start entering the river in mid-June and the run peaks in July-August. The river itself is about 8 miles long, and not a very wide channel, so for summer fishing a single handed 7-8 weight rod tends to be sufficient. For heavy water, a small double hander can come in handy.

Good water at Kylemore but salmon run sporadic so far

Nigel Rush reports that there were a few salmon caught at the Kylemore Abbey Fishery during the week…

UPDATE – 21 July: Things are starting to improve. Mr. Fitzjohn landed three today through the Upper and Middle River, lost three and turned as many again. Seems to be a more consistent run of fish at last.

19 July: We have plenty of water but the run of fish is sporadic. Some days a good belt of fish seem to be everywhere, the next, nothing doing. We have been averaging about eight fish a week for the past couple of weeks with little rod effort. To date we have 51 fish in the book against 35 for the same period last year. By no means a record, but better than nothing.

Our best week on average over the last 10 years is Week 33 which this year is 2nd-8th August. The week after the draft netting has ended.

We had a textbook day today with conditions just 100% perfect but only one fish landed from good anglers.  Where as yesterday was “poor”, awful conditions; conditions that would drive the best of anglers daft and yet one angler, Seamus O’Neil, had four fish for a morning. Three of theses fish were a mere 2lb or even less so hopefully these are the pipers that hearald the start of the serious Grilse run.

Hidden away between the mountains of Connemara and the Atlantic ocean, the Kylemore Abbey fishery is a wild and beautiful place. Kylemore Abbey Fishery consists of the Kylemore Middle and Castle lakes, with five and a half miles of the Dawros river which enters the sea in Ballynakill bay.  Salmon and sea-trout run for a good proportion of the year to provide first class fishing on uncrowded waters.

The open panoramas of the lakes contrast with the intimacy of the river to give a variety of fishing combined with stunning scenery unrivalled anywhere in Ireland. Although offering an excellent chance of a fish for most of the season, you will find the real meaning of “a fish is a bonus” at Kylemore.

Salmon to 14lb caught amongst the grilse on Owenea

19 July: Water levels were very good at the start of the week with the gauge reading 0.28 metres at its highest on Monday. The river then fell over the next 3 days but then we received a good flood on Friday evening and lovely water levels on Saturday (0.28m) and Sunday (0.50m). The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.29 metres. The fishery was busy with 63 visiting rods fishing for the week. There were decent numbers of salmon caught during the good water periods.

On Monday, Davy Arbuckle accounted for a 6½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8. Michael McCrory reported a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8 and Adrian Whelan accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8.

On Tuesday, Michael McCrory logged a 2½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7.

On Saturday Hugh Mooney recorded 2 salmon weighing 9 & 9½lb caught on a spinner from beat 5. John Northridge reported 2 grilse weighing 4 & 6lb caught on a fly from beat 4. Frankie Byrne logged a 5½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 5 and Damien Doherty registered a 10½lb salmon caught on a fly from Beat 5.

On Sunday, Adrian Whelan reported a 14lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8 and Jim McLean accounted for 2 grilse weighing 5½ & 6½lb caught on a spinner from beat 8.

The forecast for the coming week is for showery weather and I would expect some good water levels in the river. Prospects look good for the coming 7 days

Good numbers of grilse in Lough Melvin

19 July: The salmon fishing was quieter this week on Lough Melvin. At this stage the lough has very good numbers of grilse present but as per normal, we see a marked drop off in salmon angling effort with many rods having caught their quota of salmon. The salmon get a bit of peace!
