Paul Whelan from Fortwilliam Fishery reports that on Saturday, 18 July, Jack Hughes from the U.K . fishing with his brother and father had great sport on the fishery. Jack took full advantage of the took full advantage of u16’s fish for free offer and had 2 lovely fish.

18lb salmon
Jack Hughes is now certainly hooked on fishing!

The first was a beautiful  18.5lb fish off the Castle Beat in the Weir pool which took him 35 minutes to land. This was Jack’s first ever salmon. Later on he he landed a 4lb grilse also which was released.

Ian Powell of Blackwater Lodge reports anglers on his beats had two very fresh grilse last Thursday. One on fly on the upper river by Maria Fasching from Germany, her First Ever Salmon. Three fish (all on fly on the upper river) were landeded on Friday including a First Ever for Walter Schilling & a First on Fly for Robert Kennedy. There was one fish on fly from the upper river beats on Saturday and one on spinner before the floods came on.  After a dirty flood the river began to clear and two very fresh grilse were caught for just 4 rod days on Monday. Ian tells us it should be very good as the latest flood fines off as grilse and some larger double-figure fish running the lower river with a dry week forecast by Met Eireann.

Currane sees some excellent sea trout this week

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

16/07/15 It was a wild Day on Lough Currane today, even though a few boats did venture out but alas drew a blank. Staying on the weather front it has made another good flood. Will give more facts tomorrow, my net is going down, see you as soon as possible.

17/07/15 Again there was a strong wind from the West, even though there were a few boats out manipulating, sadly they failed miserably in their duties to  procure a Lough Currane wild Game Fish. On the amount of rainfall there has been a total of 79.6mm so far this month and that includes yesterday where there was 14.7mm. So with any luck once Lough Currane settles down again we should see some good action. Just for the record, I get my rainfall facts from http://www.met.ie/latest/yesterday.asp

18/07/15 We Start with the early shift on Lough Currane, Northern Ireland angler Mr. Andy Wishart and his gillie  Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com  were in great form early this morning with two fine Grilse caught on the troll, both were in the 7 lbs. class. Now we head downstream to the famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie Mr. Roger Simpson, fishing with his gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com  caught a fine 6 ½ lbs. Grilse on the fly and they finished their day off on Lough Currane in the Sea Trout fly department with 2 Sea Trout up to 3 lbs. Now we head up to the upper Lakes and Cloonaghlin Mr. Liam Ellis caught and released  a fine Trout on the drift.

Mr. Liam Ellis
Mr. Liam Ellis

19/07/15 Lough Currane was on the quiet side in the fly department so we head straight to the trolling department, Mr. Andy Wishart was in good form again, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com they  caught a 5 lbs. Grilse. Staying in the trolling department, their was a touch of enjoyment followed by a touch  sadness for Local angler Mr. Gerard Cronin of Waterville as he was trolling around  and reminiscing to himself of the great days out on Lough Currane with his good friend and fishing Buddy Tommy O’Sullivan who sadly passed away earlier this year, well Tommy must have been looking down at his good mate Gerard, because it wasn’t long before Gerard caught himself a fine 5 ½ lbs salmon/Grilse, as he netted his fish he looked round as if Tommy was their and Gerard said to himself I dedicate this Salmon in memory of my school and life time good friend Tommy and it is a pity I can’t  shake hands with you my great friend. May the sod rest lightly on his Soul.

20/07/15 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong SW wind blowing. There was only one angler that hit’s today’s headlines in the fly C&R department and that is Northern Ireland Angler, Mr. Andrew Wishart, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 3 fine Sea Trout, two in the 2 ½ lbs. class and finished their day off with a cracker of a Sea Trout of 5 lbs. and the truth of the pudding is in the eating of, as you can see from this great photo taken by Andrew before his gillie, Dominic does the honours of releasing their fine catch. for the rest of the angling community they either failed miserably to catch my Noble Game Fish or they failed to let the fingers do the talking.

21/07/15 The Bungalow Takes the headlines, we start in the Sea Trout department and in the Junior Class, Mr. Tony Hall, caught 1 Junior to his fly rod, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com now to the Italian connection, Mr. Nick Scott from Italy and fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 4 lbs. Sea Trout on the drift. Wind NW light with the odd light shower.

Breaking news just in. Got this one off of Church Island today on fly 3.5lbs on a prototype fly.. Got a few more small lads all returned.. Tks Mike O Driscoll

This last week has seen a number of fish caught mostly in the 3 to 5lb bracket! The seatrout are starting to co-operate again!

Great conditions on the Bandon, modest catch reports

Eileen Carroll reports that the good fishing of the previous weekend fizzled out very quickly even though water levels and conditions were perfect and there was only about a dozen fish reported for the week.

As of early this week the Bandon Angling Association tells us that they have the best summer fishing conditions they’ve had in a couple of years. Peter Aspinwall reported great sport on 21 July with a 9lb fish and Jason Nash had a 5 pounder, both as fresh as daisies. Fly fishing is still proving to be the most productive method.

The River Bandon is a most scenic and prolific game fishing river flowing through some of the most picturesque country side in West Cork. It’s source is a few miles north west of Dunmanway from where it flows through that town and and on through the villages of Ballineen, Enniskeane, Kilcoleman, Bandon and Innishannon where it become tidal and widens into an estuary before meeting the sea past Kinsale.

A dozen salmon last week at ESB fishery on Lee

Eileen Carroll, IFI Macroom, reports that for the past three 3 weeks about 18 salmon, mostly peel, were landed.  Most of these were landed last week averaging 2lbs – 4lbs.  Best methods flies and spinning.

RIVER LEE ESB FISHERY

19 July: Three anglers from Co. Antrim, Ryan Richardson, Stephen Richardson and Jim Richardson, between them had 10 salmon including some peel for the week, ranging from 3.5lbs up to 9lbs, landed on shrimp.  Noel Kavanagh, Cork, had 1 salmon weighing 5lbs landed on a fly.  An unknown angler returned a peel of 2.5lbs.

Few salmon on the Laune system last week

Eileen Carroll in IFI’s Macroom office has the news from the Laune system…

There are no reports of salmon of the Killarney Lakes, Lough Lein, the Killarney Flesk or Beats 1 and 2 on the River Laune.

Billy Downes of the Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association reports that as of Monday 20th July the water level is at 1.36m at the Laune Bridge or just over 2 feet at Johnston’s. Beautiful water for all methods and will be clearing to even better condition today and for the rest of the week.

Conditions beautiful but despite a good angling effort over the weekend news of fish is extremely scarce once again.

At Johnston’s last evening all I saw landed among six anglers was one small grilse which had been through the wars in the estuary and was marked on both flanks.

Beat 3: The Beat 3 water level is lovely just now.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters from now to the end of July only €25 per day.

Ballincollig weir to cost €500K to repair – Evening echo

It will cost up to €500,000 to repair a collapsed weir at Ballincollig Regional Park.
A report by consulting engineers on behalf of Cork County Council estimates that the cost of long-term repairs to the weir will be between €450,000 and €550,000.

The historic weir collapsed in December of last year and that led to a major operation to save up to 10,000 fish that had got trapped in a dried-up canal.
The canals had dried up after damage to the weir halted the flow of water from the River Lee.
Repairs to the concrete weir have been delayed, as agencies, including Cork County Council, the Office of Public Works, and the Inland Fisheries Board have debated what needs to be done, who is responsible, and who will pay the bill…..

Depleted fish stocks not helped by those thieving seals – Irish Times

With over 60 years of angling under my belt, I suppose I can say without fear that I have caught most of the species in our European seas, rivers and lakes. That includes bleak from the River Mole (a tributary of the Thames), gudgeon from the Tolka at Ashtown and zander from the lakes of Tampere in Finland.

Beyond that, I could add bonefish and tuna and a few more exotic species. Wait, the elusive char still evades (but there’s still time!) The one regret I have is my failure to chronicle my escapades. No diary, just memories…..

River Boyne Produces a Few Nice Salmon

Peter Cunningham from Drogheda Angling Centre has been in touch to report that a few fish have been taken recently on the River Boyne. Clive Eyres from Drogheda had a nice 10lb fish recently and another angler had two fish over the weekend weighing 10lb and 15lbs. Peter reports that he had two fish as well weighing 9lbs and 14lbs. Fish are being taken on shrimp and fly.

Sea trout fishing has slowed as fish have dispersed throughout the system but there are still sea trout between three quarters of a pound and one pound being taken on fly on the lower stretch of the river. Water conditions in the Boyne are currently low and clear with recent rain having had little effect on levels.

For the latest information on fishing on the lower Boyne area why not give Peter Cunningham a call or drop into him for a chat in the Drogheda Angling Centre, Boyne Shopping Centre, Drogheda.

Peter can be contacted by Tel: 086 4682516  or by email[email protected]
