Some English anglers fished Corfree, Lough Gowna and report good bags of fish up to 80lb including bream and tench up to 6lb in weight. There are also plenty of skimmers, hybrids and roach being bagged.
Percys Shore on Dereskit is producing good bags of fish, also Carrs Lough with bream and tench up to 4lb.
Good mixed bags up to 60lb are being fished at Killykeen Match Section with plenty of bream and hybrids. Nice bream are also being bagged at Little Drumanny.
With the weather working against our boat angling enthusiasts recently, guide Richie Ryan had to seek a haven for a group of Antrim bass anglers from a shore mark instead of his beloved Sea Hawk. It’s an awful long way to travel for bass fishing so no pressure Richie ! With the outer marks blown out of the equation, the Eire Bass guide had to resort to an estuary mark. The secret of these marks says Richie, is timing the tidal state to coincide with the movement of the bass. This is where local knowledge pays off.
Davy Wright caught his first bass ever on his trip to Cork
With a strong South Westerly wind blowing in the face of the anglers conditions were tough but they persisted and were eager to catch a bass. Luck was on their side as 3 nice bass fell to soft plastics. Nothing really big , but they were bass. Some had their first ever bass. Happy anglers, happy guide !
Allister Stewart with a nice fish
One regret Richie had was that young Scott Stewart did not land his quarry. They caught left and right of him. Boy did he try, a very keen fisherman, Richie says he’s going to make a superb angler.
Bill Ryan is back in West Clare on his annual Wrasse fishing expedition. So far he has only managed to fish one day out of three due to a heavy swell which has been making any rock fishing extremely dangerous.
The one day lull allowed him to fish safely at the Bridges of Ross where the wrasse were plentiful with several over 4 lbs. The best of these weighed 4.65 lbs.
The best wrasse of the session weighed 4.65 lbs
Crab fished on light tackle accounted for all the fish.
All were returned alive.
Bill hopes to get out again if conditions improve and maybe connect with the triggerfish which can be caught from marks in Clare from August to September.
Eileen Carroll Murphy IFI reports from the River Bandon up to 23rd August 2015:
River Bandon
Week-ended 9/8/15 The river fished well again last week with good numbers of salmon and grilse running the river. There were a number of good salmon 10lb to 15lb reported as well as some really nice grilse of 5lb to 7lb. Most successful methods were fly and worm.
Week-ended 16/8/15 This week was a quiet week on the river. There were only a few fish running as the water was low. There are resident fish in the system but are coloured and not inclined to take.
Week-ended 23/8/15 There was little angling done last week as the river dropped off to low conditions. There were a few fish taken on the lower river by anglers fishing shrimp below the town of Bandon.

The NCFFI reports that a number of English anglers make the journey each year to support this two day festival run by Prosperous Angling Club in memory of the late Ned O’Farrell. There were less locals this year with many off to pick up a big prize on the Barrow, there were just 18 fishing. Rathangan was the venue choice on the Grand Canal providing easy access to all pegs.
Good quality canal fish
The water was coloured with a good tow from left to right making for perfect conditions on day one and some good weights with skimmers and bream appearing. Alas, the colour dropped out on day two and the flow ceased and the top weight was just 12lb.
Rathangan can be a productive venue
Never the less it was enjoyable fishing albeit a little wet and regular Martin Lenihan from Warrington, UK was delighted with his winning weight of 32lbs 11oz and his winnings of over €200. Royal Enfield CAC’s Aidan Gill came second with 29lbs 13oz with Sid Baldock from Loughborough, UK in third place with 24lbs 10oz. Local angler Sean Ward from Prosperous AC took the final payout with his 20lbs 8oz fo 4th position.

The Boats on the two lakes were booked out at the week end by the same group. The White Lake fished very well on Saturday and Finnertys was a bit dour – there were only a few fish caught in it. The lads on the White Lake said they met fish on every drift. The fish averaged a lb to 1 1/2 lbs and they reckoned they landed over 25. They saw one fish of about 5 lbs jumping in the water and two or three good fish came to the fly and swirled and left it. That has been happening all the year.
We had a flash flood yesterday and the river rose by 18 inches so with the constant showers it will fish well for the next few days. A lot of the fish caught in the lakes over the week end were bars of silver which means they are still running straight through.
There are approximately five miles of fly fishing along the main part of the Owenmore River in Kerry, with 33 named pools and an additional 180 acres of lake fishing in this Kerry beauty spot. The salmon, grilse and sea trout begin to run in April. The runs continue through spring and summer into early October.
23 August: The Owenea remained fairly low for the greater part of the week. The gauge varied from 0.10m to 0.14m until Sunday when we received a big flood reading 0.56m due to the constant rain all day. The gauge average for the week was 0.19m and 26 visiting rods fished for the week. To date I have no reports of any catches however.
