Good numbers of sea trout and grilse running Carrowmore Lake

Despite changing weather conditions, anglers caught 27 salmon (11 released) over the past two weeks on Carrowmore Lake. Amongst the successful anglers were members of the Dargle Anglers who had an outing on Carrowmore during the week. The majority of the fish were fresh-run grilse between 3 and 6 lbs.

Along with the grilse there are very good numbers of sea trout entering the system providing extremely enjoyable fishing. Most of the sea trout are around ¾ lbs. weight with the odd bigger fish amongst them. However, some anglers also reported fine sea trout between 2 and 3.5 lbs. Most successful flies included Black Dabbler, Green Peter and small size Cascade patterns fished on the point.

Please note that Carrowmore Lake is a Brown Tag Fishery this year! For fishing on Carrowmore Lake contact Seamus Henry on +353 (0)97 83487 or visit www.bangorerrisangling.com.

Over 500 salmon caught on the Moy last week

Salmon angling on the Moy System improved further with over 500 fish reported for the week. As in the previous, the best of the fishing was confined to the tidal section of the river and the reaches upstream from Foxford town. However, the fisheries located along the middle section of the river also reported some catches.

The Ridge Pool produced a total of 20 salmon including two fly-caught grilse (4.5 & 9.5 lbs.) for Jonathan Smith from Cavan. On the Moy Fishery’s Weir Pool, German flyangler, Christin Breuker, had her first ever Moy salmon, a fine grilse of 5.5 lbs. Anglers on the Cathedral Beat also did well, while Kai Puscher from Germany was successful on the Spring Wells landing a nice 7 pounder on fly.

Swiss visitor, Christian Gerber had a 5 lbs. grilse on the Mount Falcon Fishery, while Nick Roberts, UK, had one on Gannon’s. Nick’s fish weighed 6 lbs. and took a spinner.

The Cloongee Fishery enjoyed a red-letter week! Mark Parsley and Geoff Besher from the UK had a total for 22 salmon (4 released) for the week. However, other anglers also scored on Cloongee including Uwe Steffen from Germany with 7 fish and French pair, Nicolas Escalle and Jean-Eric Gancille, who caught a number of salmon up to 8 lbs. Most fish on Cloongee were taken on bubble & fly.

Further upriver on East Mayo, dropping water levels didn’t impact as much as feared and anglers were no less successful. Flyfishing produced a good number of grilse including 5 lbs. fish for Garrett McMorris, Northern Ireland and Mark Parsley, UK.

The wetter conditions of late should see a continuation of the grilse run and hopefully improve fishing on the middle section of the river.

No shortage of 1m+ pike on Lough Derg

Pierre Monjarret reports that this year has been one of his best so far on Lough Derg…

03 July: Today was the last day for my group and last day for me before September. We had 3 fish over 1 meter today. Each fish put up a really strong fight in shallow water. We used x busters, my favourite bait during this part of the season! This brings me to 75 pike over 1 meter since February. This is my best season so far!

107cm pike
A 22lbs, 107cm summer pike caught by Sigi last week

Greg Latour of Tir na Spideog reports on the pike fishing at Lough Allua…

Lough Allua pike are feeding well. Some guys say that summer piking is useless. Well, this was the biggest pike caught on the 2nd of july in 2,5 m of water .

107cm pike
A 22lbs, 107cm summer pike caught by Sigi last week

The pike measured 107 cm and weighed 22lbs. After a few photos it was quickly released and water temperatures of 16 degrees certainly won’t harm the fish. My wife Sigi caught several pike on the day and most pike are currently caught on dead bait.

The Macroom Pike Anglers fished their 3rd competition of the year on Lough Allua on July o5. The longest fish of the day measured 99cm.

The Irish Ladies Fly-Fishing Association report that 11 ladies from as far away as Belfast and Donegal met up at Bleach Lough, near Limerick on Sunday 5th July, for their2nd outing of the year…

It was great to see everyone again. We were warmly welcomed by all the club members from Bleach Lough Anglers who helped us carry our gear and boated us and ensured we had a most relaxing day out on this pristine limestone lake. Thanks to Dave from Bleach Lough for hosting us. The fishing was excellent and it was lovely to welcome our newest member Michelle Hay from Donegal.

The winner of the event was Julie Gerry with 10 fish, hot on her heels was Julie McGeever with 9 fish. Top boatman was Peter Buston who had 12 fish to his boat. Successful flies varied from daddies, diawl bachs to boobies, blobs and sparklers.

Thanks Hazel for all the many arrangements. We then had a quick bite at O’Deas bar afterwards to get a catch up and a good chat.

Water brings fresh fish to the Erriff

Catch and release
Raphael Amat releases another salmon

I was at Aasleagh Lodge on the River Erriff on Monday, which is looking well at the moment under new management, who are very welcoming to anglers. The river got a nice flood of 1.8m following Tuesday’s heavy rain, which has been topped up by showers since, keeping the river at a good fishing level.

Salmon and sea trout are running the river here too, and the upper beats will be fishing well once the influx of fresh fish have settled into their lies.

Osgur Grive is the new fishery manager here and can be contacted at 095 42382, or email [email protected] .

Connemara salmon and sea trout fishing should improve as floods clear

Reports from Connemara are sparse this week, as low water levels over the last week were superseded by heavy rain on Tuesday, following which rivers have been in flood. As the floods clear salmon and sea trout are starting to move in better numbers, and I expect to have much more to report next week with these better conditions now promising good fishing for the next few days.

Among the fisheries expected to fare well are Costello and Fermoyle, where the numbers caught have been ahead of previous years so far. Contact Terry Gallagher at [email protected] or on 087 2399988 to book fishing.

Lough Inagh should also feature well, with the lake now at a good level for fishing and releasing plenty of water to the river downstream. Colin Folan is the man to contact there, email [email protected] or call the hotel at 095 34706.

Downstream of Inagh, the Ballynahinch Castle beats will be seeing a lot of fish running on the fresh water and should produce good sport to the rod over the coming weeks. Contact the castle at 095 31006 for enquiries.

Screebe Lodge will also be expecting a good run of grilse and sea trout, and with the lakes close to the estuary providing fishing they are less dependent on floods to entice fish in. Fishery manager Trevor Down had a lovely brown trout from Screebe Lake during the week, which shows the quality of fish available, not just salmon and sea trout. Quiet on Corrib but super fishing available

5lbs 10oz Corrib Trout
UK angler Tony Ling with a fantastic 5lbs 10z trout taken on a Caenis pattern on Lough Corrib

Declan Gibbons reports that fishing has been relatively quiet on Corrib, however there is some spectacular sport still to be had with “Corrib still giving” according to Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge (087-9135222, www.corribangling.com ). Larry and Michelle hosted two first time visitors to Corrib View Lodge – Tony Ling and Tony Donnelly –  who had spectacular fishing last week over 4 days. Monday’s early morning Caenis rise produced 2 trout including one over 3lbs. Wind on Tuesday had the duo sedge fishing which saw them catch 4 trout, one of which was 4lbs 10 oz.

All trout were weighed and sportingly released. Tony beautiful fish wins him Catch of the Week. Jeremy O’Brien also had two red letter mornings while guided by Larry, catching 8 beautiful trout on Monday, 3 of which were over 4lbs. On Wednesday Jeremy had 8 trout all all between the 2 and 3lbs mark with all sportingly released. Finally Bill Lytham, an angling guide in the UK, had 10 good trout over three mornings; all fish were between 1lb 8oz and 3lbs 8oz and all were sportingly released. Bill also enjoyed an evening’s fishing guided by Larry on the excellent Clare River with a river beauty of 2lbs 12oz.

In first place was lady angler Anna Lee Foster who caught 2 trout for 1880 points. Second place was shared between Paul Miller and Gerry McCranor with 940 points. Third place was Emmet Greaney with 880 points. Fursey Kenny was in fourth place with 830 points and in fifth place was Paul White with 723.5 points. Prize giving and BBQ took place at Murphys Bar, Kilbeg Pier where a fun evening was had by all.

A dozen grilse and sea trout to 7lb 8oz from Currane last week

Lough Currane
Dave and Vince Photo taken by local anger Ken Towner

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane..

1/7/15 The first day of July brought very little action in the fly department and for good reason, Lough Currane was like a milk pond. But with the elements against them at least two Anglers kept the Lough Currane flag flying high. UK angler Mr. Greg Sutton, fishing out of http://www.golflinksview.kerry-ireland.com/index.html  caught a lightening fresh 6 lbs. grilse on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com.  A client fishing with his Gillie MD, caught a fine 4 ½ lbs. grilse. Just for the record there were about 10 boats out fishing and I come to the conclusion some anglers are not letting their fingers do the talking at the end of their day. All I can say is if I didn’t let my fingers do the talking you the readers wouldn’t be amused and there wouldn’t be any argument to that. Wind as already stated and overcast with heavy rain at times.

2/7/15 We Start in the Salmon department, UK Angler, Mr. Greg Sutton, fishing out of http://www.golflinksview.kerry-ireland.com/index.html, caught a fine 5 ½ lbs. grilse on the troll at the point of Green Island, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com.  An angler fishing on his own caught a Grilse on the troll. Now to the Sea Trout department, UK Anglers, Mr. Merick Parsons and Mr. Graham Elswood, fishing out of www.curranelodge.ie caught and released 5 Sea Trout up to 3 ½ lbs. Their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com told me that they were using a floating line a their star flie was the Bibio. Wind S then veered SW fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

3.5lb sea trout lough currane
John Burton caught and released a 3 ½ lbs Sea Trout on the fly

3/7/15 It was a wild day on Lough Currane, with a strong SSE wind blowing and all the boats on the North side were landed by lunch time. But wind or no wind this didn’t deter UK Anglers Mr. Graham Elswood, fishing out of www.curranelodge.ie, from catching a lightening fresh 4 ¼ lbs. grilse on the troll. Mr. Merick Parsons finished their morning off with a fine 3 lbs. Sea Trout, caught on the drift and he sportingly put back. the pair were guided by their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Now we head over to the South side and hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com where John Burton caught and released a 3 ½ lbs. Sea Trout on the fly.

4/7/15 It was a wild gusty day, this day of American independence and my Noble Game fish on Lough Currane made sure that they kept their independence. Wind as already stated with the odd shower.

3.5lb salmon lough currane
Steven from Serbia, caught a 3 ½ lbs. Grilse on the troll,

5/7/15 Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney was the Anglers choice of venue today, because the Kingdom of Kerry were playing the Trebles, sorry!! Rebels of Cork, but thankfully, Steven from Serbia, caught a 3 ½ lbs. grilse on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com. To all you anglers that failed to put boat to water, I can tell you one thing without any fear of contradiction, Lough Currane is the Fitzgerald Stadium of Game Fishing in Kerry and there is No Draws, just Fish and the odd blank!! Wind SW fresh with good cloud cover.

Mike the Matador
Mike the Matador – the salmon was caught “locally”

6/7/15 UK Angler Mr. Vincent Spittal, caught a fine Grilse on the Troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Now we head to the river department and which river you have three choices, all I know is the Crowned Kerry Matador, Mike the Bull caught a cracker of a Salmon in the 11 lbs. class, caught on his special Black Birds Fancy fly. Just for the record I asked Mike where he caught his fine Salmon, he replied no comment. Wind SW fresh with good cloud cover.

7/7/15 It was a rough day on the Waterville Fishery and it wasn’t easy to manipulate the flies.  But  UK angler Mr. Mark Knowles, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 2 Grilse and finished their day with a Sea Trout. Now we head to the upper lakes and Lough Cloonaghlin and catch of the day goes to 11 year old  Master Joe Kirwan, who battled the elements and was rewarded with 9 fine Brown Trout, the best of which was 2 ½ lbs. all caught on the fly. Wind West and wild and these conditions makes Joe’s fine catch even more satisfying.

Sea trout
John Allen’s sea trout from Derriana

8/7/15 The Fly takes all the headlines. Today we start with the Upper Lakes where John Allen was up on Derriana for a few hours today and managed a few brownies to 1 lbs. and a nice Sea Trout of about 2.75 / 3lbs  which he released. Now we head down stream to the Big Lake / Lough Currane and again the fly was the main attracter. UK angler Dave Eccelstone, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com caught a fine 4lbs. grilse and finished his day off with a great 7 lbs. 8oz. Sea Trout. Last but not least, UK angler Mr. Mark Knowles, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught  1 grilse. Wind NW moderate with reasonable cloud cover.
