Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene

Lough Owel

Mark and Tommy Driver were out at the weekend on Lough Owel for the Leinster TAFI lakes. It was an awkward enough days fishing, a couple of fish caught alright.

A cold windy on Lough Owel for 20 anglers. Early start with rain and wind, with winds increasing as the day went on. Large hatches of Olives in the afternoon carpeted the lake in places but there were little to no rises of fish.

Fish in the afternoon were reported by many to be feeding very high in the water.

Over the course of the day 35 fish were caught by 15 out of the 20 anglers taking part.

Seniors

1st:- Fergal McKeirnan – 5 fish 4543grams

2nd Shane Callan – 4 fish 4367grams

2nd John Kellagher – 3 fish 2651

3rd Robbie Phelan – 3 fish 2576.

Congratulations to all the winners. A big thank you to Brendan Murray for stepping in as Boatman for 2 anglers. Also a big thank you to Stan McKeon for coming by to do our weigh-in on the day, a great help and much appreciated. Thank to our Secretary Mark Driver for organising the day with the committee.

Trout fishing picking up for Jasper Matthews

Jasper with a nice brownie on the dries

Angling guide Jasper Matthews of Wild Atlantic Angling Experiences was both angling guide and passenger on the loughs recently. First off, he had Dan and Grant out with him for a spot of wet-fly fishing, on a day which started with a nice rolling wave but became calmer later. Both guys rose plenty of trout and managed to boat a fish each, including a PB for Dan.

Next up, Jasper was at the bow end of the boat for a change, as his friend Osgur took the engine for the day. Osgur rose a heap of fish using wets, but most of them were coming short and so didn’t connect, but he did manage to bring a couple to the net. Jasper pulled streamers for most of the day without having any luck, but a late switch to dries on the last few drifts brought a bit of action, and he landed a nice wild brownie.

Nip & Tuck for New Ross anglers at Ballyhack

The New Ross & District SAC held the latest round of their club competition schedule at Ballyhack last weekend. Weather had been forecast to be pretty miserable, but the anglers were delighted to find that the rain held off and they ended up fishing in pretty comfortable conditions. Sixteen anglers turned out and they were straight into fish from the first cast at 3pm.

There were double and triple shots of flats, and both junior and senior anglers were hitting into fish, and the junior section was very hotly contested, with recent Irish team qualifier just edging ahead to take first place. On the senior side, it was a close run thing too, but a late triple shot followed by a 52cm bass gave James Ryan just enough to give him the first on the night.

This fine 52cm bass swung things in James Ryan’s favour

Philippe with a cracking Pike
Philippe with a cracking Pike

Regular French anglers Philippe, Bruno, Julien and Bernard who we reported on last week having had a great start to their holiday finished their week of  fishing just as well as they started it. Fishing with both hard and soft lures the managed to catch 183 cracking Pike with some over the metre and a lot 90cm+.

They fished a few locations which all produced good Pike for them. Kevin said that the guys have been many times to Melview Fishing Lodge so know the waters well.

Great weeks fishing so well done guys and look forward to welcoming you back again next year, thanks again.

Big bass in reach of shore anglers in Waterford and elsewhere

Keith Barker is well known as bass angler who specialises in big fish and earlier this month he was getting some super fish on hard plastics…

An incredible pre dawn session was had on the west Waterford coast recently with Keith Barker taking four great fish ranging from 64cm to 74cm.

All four fish fell for a cotton candy patterned shallow diving hard lure in shallow water three hours before the sun came up.

This is a great start to the season, a prolonged period settled weather making water temperatures rise and improving water clarity bringing some bait fish inshore and bass with them.

Long may these conditions last.

Easter rains raise water level at Ballisodare and first salmon caught

angler lands a salmon at Ballisodare

Gerry Merrick reports from the Ballisodare Salmon Fishery…

Ballisodare Salmon Fishery Report – 23rd April 2025

Ballisodare Fishery opened on the 1st April with a few enthusiastic anglers participating on opening day. Subsequently, water levels dropped and remained low until last weekend (Easter) when rains arrived, accompanied by rise in water levels.

Although not fished heavily over Easter, Noel Barber met with success in catching two nice salmon, first of the season. Estimated between 7 lbs and 8 lbs., both were caught on a Snaelda tube fly and both were swiftly released.

Catch and Release

For two seasons now, Ballisodare Fishing Club has implemented a catch and release policy until end of May, to protect stocks of Spring Salmon. Consequently, only fly fishing is allowed during this period.

The Ballisodare River is the name given to the two and a half miles of river formed by the meeting of two fairly large rivers, the Owenmore and Arrow or Unshin River, about half a mile below the town of Collooney. The river empties out into the estuary of Ballisodare Bay at the Falls in Ballisodare.

The river has something for every serious salmon angler, from the quieter upper reaches with wide pools and tree lined banks to the series of ledges and mini falls in Ballisodare Town.

Some nice fishing at Erne Easter Festival

River Erne

This report from the Erne Anglers on the results of their Easter Festival:

With river running slow, fishing was better around the town area and some nice big fish were caught. The day three winner was Lee Symonds and he had a mega 16kg of bream and roach from Broadmeadow peg 7.

The weight table was very tight for the last day but Gary Johnson fished a consistent match averaging 10kg per day and managed to win this year’s Erne Easter festival with 31.325kg.

Runner up was Aaron Hutchman with 26.185kg and third Lee Symonds with 25.650kg.

Chris Whyte wins 9th match in Killybegs Mariners Shore League

Killybegs Mariners fished the 9th leg of their 2024/25 Shore League at the weekend…

19 April: A tough battle on the local beach last night with a cold north easterly and flat conditions making it a real struggle to get fish over our minimum size limit of 20cm.

A fine fish of 35cm for Pat Byrne was a big point scorer but with 3 counting flounders on the night it was a well done to Chris Whyte taking the win with 98 points winning €66.
2nd place was won by Pat Byrne with 60 points winning €33.

Longest flattie outside the top 2 positions was shared by Stefan Martin and John Cunningham with 20cm fish each splitting €33.

Well done to all.

Also note we sold all the numbers for tonight’s lotto bonus ball draw for the Tronix pro rod with all the money €470 going towards the Bundoran R.N.L.I. and the good and new charity shop in aid of the Donegal Galway cancer bus

Big Perch and Pike on Lough Derg

Senan Stanely of Irish Fishing Tours was out after perch on light gear, but he got more than he bargained for…

17 April: A great laugh this evening with Ivan , chunky perch to 40cm with double hookups of 38s , pike to 102cm. bitter cold in those rain showers but you can’t complain when you’re fishing, it’s against the rules.

19 April: Chasing perch on a 2-10g Westin streetstick when this yoke decided it wanted a 2inch lure for its dinner!

Senan has also been doing a bit of trout fishing recently and has some great videos on his YouTube channel of trout on small lures in rivers and on the lake.

Patrick O’Neill wins tough 2 day festival on Lough Bridget

Munster Coarse Anglers fished what is probably the the toughest 2 days of fishing we have ever reported on in the Irish Angling Update. Kevin Leahy reports…

Lough Bridget

Not every day do you get over half the field getting in to the prizes but this weekend’s match was a bit a of a exception with 7 dry nets over the two days and every angler left frustrated and wondering what to do to get a bite!

Normally Lough Bridget fishes well this time of year with lots of small Roach ,Rudd, Hybrids and Skimmers not this year alas. In fact the Silvergrove section was almost devoid of anything only two small fish caught on day one and on day 2 only two anglers managed to put a few in the net.

Ian Kelsey with a small but vital fish

Likewise Swan Island was not much better a few fish on the feeder in the first couple of hours and then nothing. Swan Island peg 4 produced small rudd and a inevitable battle with Pike the most consistent over the two days

  • 1st Paddy Patrick O’Neill 3lb 13oz
  • 2nd Trevor Platt 3lb 1.5oz
  • 3rd Liam & Kevin 2lb 8oz
  • 4th Martin & Ray 2lb
