Andrea palma and Simone Antonioli with cracking pike
Mick Flanagan from Midland Angling reports that his Italian pike fishing guests, who featured prominently in last week’s Irish Angling Update, finished out their angling holiday in great style…
What a few days pike fishing our pals from Abruzzo had here in the Midlands, and our main pic last week of Andrea Palma with a huge Ree pike rocked the Angling World [the photo of Stefano’s 24lb pike on a fly was the banner pic for last week’s Irish Angling Update – Ed.].
Andrea palma and Simone Antonioli with another cracking pike. And mick got in on the action this time too – scroll down!
The lads have returned home with some fantastic memories of their angling adventure here in Westmeath, and a huge gallery of photographs to show family members, and angling pals.
Another beauty for the Azzurris
Even on the last day I fished with Andrea Palma and Simone Antonioli, we rattled the scales with some huge pike on a variety of colourful lures.

Paul mc Namara from Cork City in an email sent us an angling report. “Just a little update from fishing on the River Flesk Killarney over the bank holiday weekend. The river was up after the rain, nice flow, and a lovely peaty colour on it. I decided to fish a hares ear nymph on the point and a pheasant tail goldhead on the dropper. Great action and fishing on river. 13 trout caught, 2 averaging a pound in weight and the rest very good size. Not bad for 2 hours fishing. Apologies had no photos.”
The May bank holiday weekend had a few visitors drifting across the Midlands writes Mick Flanagan from Midland Angling…
Alan Thomas of Carrickfergus was back down visiting relations, and got away for a few hours fishing. Alan has featured before in our angling slot, and loves the fishing and shooting game so naturally we got on quite well.
Alan Thomas and beautyfull Lough Lene rainbow.
Alan has fished Owel and Ennell and fancied a day on Lene for pike and trout. We had a super few hours catching hard fighting rainbows, and colorful brownies on the troll and on fly. Plus after lunch we managed to boat a nice pike of 8-9lbs.

1/5/15 It was a freezing cold Lough Currane, with a fresh SE wind, with light rain, but this didn’t deter my Noble anglers from going out and hoping to battle with the Wild Atlantic Salmon and I can tell you, it wasn’t long before the trolling reels were singing the Lough Currane National anthem. First in the striking Zone was Mr. William Timmermans of Holland and Waterville, who caught a fine 7 lb. Salmon, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Staying at the Bungalow and the Home of the Waterville Fishery. Mr. Daragh Pender of Cork and fishing out of www.curranelodge.ie caught a 9 lbs. Salmon on the troll while fishing with his ghillie Mr.Terence Wharton Snr.
2/5/15 All quiet on the SW front. On the weather front, misty rain and heaver at times, wind WSW light to fresh. Now back to yesterday, I failed to report of a fine Sea Trout of 3 lb. caught on the fly, I can’t give the anglers name because I forgotten his name, sorry for that, some reporting!
Well known golfer Liam Higgins with a fine 11 lb. salmon on fly
3/5/15 The May Bank Holiday brought some great action on the fly and the troll after the flood. So here is today’s action. First in the striking Zone, was SJAJ Foley of Holland and Ireland, who caught his first 7 lbs. Salmon on the fly, on Lough Currane while fishing with hisGillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy ofwww.fishingwithdom.com Now we cut across to the South side and Kelly’s Bog, renowned Golfer Mr. Liam Higgins ofwww.watervillegolflinks.ie and atwww.facebook.com/WatervilleLinks caught a cracker of a Salmon of 11 lbs. on the fly, Liam may have used his engine as his driver but his fly rod gave him as good as a hole in one! Staying on the South side with the fly, Mr. Tim Harley caught a fantastic 12 ½ lbs. Salmon on the drift between Copal and Edery. Tim was telling me that he had one great battle, you could say his Noble Salmon was firing on all cylinders. Now to the Specimen Sea Trout department and the headlines go to Mr Michael Junior Quilligan of Cork and fishing out ofhttp://www.bayviewhotelwaterville.com/ who caught a cracker of Sea Trout of just over 8 ½ lbs. on the troll. Wind light to fresh with good cloud cover with showers.
Mr Michael Junior Quilligan with a specimen sea trout from Lough Currane
4/5/15 On the Salmon front there were no Salmon or Specimen Sea Trout snookered on the day shift but it was a different story on the evening shift and catch of the day goes to 9 year old Miss Jayden Fogarty, who caught her first 10 lbs. Salmon on the troll, while fishing with here Dad. so congratulations Jayden on your first Salmon and may it be the first of many.

Now back to yesterday because there is an update on Mr. Michael Junior Quilligan and party, not satisfied with their specimen Sea Trout, Michael and Mr. Peter Mullane went out again in the evening and caught a fine 10 lbs. Salmon on the troll. Wind South and fresh and overcast with the odd shower.

6/5/15 My Noble Salmon were having a Blank Holiday this day on the Lough Currane, in other words, yes you have it, my Noble Anglers failed miserably in their duties in all departments. There was a strong NW wind this morning, come afternoon NW light to fresh and overcast with showers and felt very cold.

A fantastic 22 anglers turned out to fish the competition, double the number in previous years and testament to how popular this discipline is becoming. The Railway bank venue, stocked by DCAL Inland Fisheries prior to the event proved to be a fair venue but one that would reveal the skills required to compete in this championship event. Over the two days of the competition run by NCFFI committee members almost 100 fish were caught.
