First salmon of the season for Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery

the Ballygarret Beat

On March 11th Blackwater Valley Fishery reported that after a long spell of high water the river had settled down and all their fishing beats were finally in good order. The water clarity and levels were good and conditions were right. All that was needed was a few fish as they got about testing skagit and floating lines with new their new rods for the season on the Ballygarret beat.

Ballygarret Beat

The improved conditions continued through the week and today we heard news from Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery that they just landed their first salmon of the season. The indominable Connie Corcoran was the lucky angler. The fish came in at 13lbs bang on according to the weigh net. Jason tells us the river is in fantastic condition; water level 0.58m on the gauge and a temperature of 9°C.

Noah Tahran wins another Rebel Match at Youghal

dogfish

REBEL COUNTY SAC fished their 4th match of 2025 at the weekend in Youghal. Shane Olden reports…

FRONT STRAND YOUGHAL
SAT 1ST MARCH – 4PM TO 9PM

The 4th out of 5 comps this side of our break up period at the end of March saw an eager 25 anglers head for the front strand in Youghal. The 1st of March also signalling the start of our 2025 club species hunt which seems to be driving members crazy and putting a great buzz across the club once again.

On arrival we had a 3.9m tide with fresh to moderate south westerly winds that were due to decrease as the night went on. Though a welcomed break from the previous easterlies it was like a summers day, something we seem to see very little of these days even at summer time. All in all it was a glorious day with overly comfortable conditions, something the REBEL’S were long over due after battling tough conditions over the winter months to stay on the fish.

First on the fish was a very close call with Radivoj Martinovic landing a thornback ray to open the clubs account. Very close to that fish was Petar Mandić with another thornback but of bigger size. Next in sequence was Vladimirs Nosovs with a rockling to keep him in the running. As things were starting to liven up I was next, between duties and taking photos, with my first thorn back ray that I had ever caught from the venue. Fish were slowly but surely starting to show across the line and the lads were looking busy. Our lady angler Edwina Anne decided to scratch away at the rockling in day light hours producing 2 rockling on her new investment in a Yuki rod and showed well before switching to the bigger fish.

Coming into darkness the numbers of Ray being caught got the excitement going as lads were only to happy to be getting photos of fish on their 2025 species hunt cards to get the ball rolling on that end of things. On the high number pegs Noah Tahran opened his account with a double shot of a flounder and a dog fish. To his left our Dublin angler CHRIS GREENE was starting to show strength, gather pace and put to use what he learned in the last few outings and it was inevitable he was going to give the lads a good run on this outing. Also getting in on the last of the day time ray were JOHN O MAHONY and STEPHEN (WEATHER WATT ) WATKINS.

With the darkness finally upon us the numbers of dog fish increased and the thorn back ray were replaced with painted ray. And again a welcomed species for our species hunters with the odd whiting in the mix also. Martin O’Hare had an unlucky few hours failing to connect with about 10 fish that just would commit enough to his bait, but Martin soon turned the tides and was producing a ray and a dog fish on most casts for what was left of the competition. Out on the front line and battling hard were Noah TAHRAN, Martin O’Hare, Chris Greene and Kieran Ryan, Who was it going to be…

Our next competition is planned for Gary Lucas beach but could be subject to venue change which will bring us up to our annual break for the summer which also gives our anglers a chance to scatter all over Ireland chasing species and specimens for our club species hunt. So we are never on a break as such the REBEL’S always keep busy.

As always we can be contacted through the usual ways for those wishing to get their names on our waiting list to join our club. We’d like to thank our friends, followers and sponsors who are also a big part of the family. Also an upcoming report on our species hunt and sponsors so watch this space.

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

Piscari-Fly Newsletter – First River Outing of the Season

Peter and the team from Piscari-Fly are back with all their fishing news:

First River Outing of 2025 Season
Mark hit the river over the weekend. Venturing to a river he likes to hit early in the season before rivers closer to us open up after St. Patricks Day. He travelled to Roscrea to the Upper Little Brosna. A tributary of the Shannon. This is a great river throughout the season, with some fine fish along with Croneen travelling through it late in the summer. It can be a bit overgrown in places and open in others. But an enjoyable river to fish, giving an angler plenty of options to build their skills on and try various methods. Mark started in the upper area of Little Brosna. Fishing for an hour and a half, managing to hook 18 nice wild trout, landing 16. Before moving downstream towards Riverstown, where the river widens more and more push this time of year. Protection for fish is less here, so fishing was harder with smaller numbers caught. Mark moved onto another section not far away on the other side of Birr, to an old stretch with lots of rubs and good fishing water. Here, the fish were plentiful, and he met fish on almost every cast.

With water temps being low, despite sunny conditions out, nymphing and targeting the fish deep was the best overall method. Gold and Silver beads proved best with a 3.5mm nymph on the point and 3mm on the dropper for marks Euro-nymphing setup on the Piscari-fly Venator 10.6ft 2wt rod. It was great getting to get some trout finally again on this fantastic rod. Most fish were coming to the point fly during the few hours, but fish caught on the dropper were all best-sized fish. With fish up to 13 inches being caught.
Copper-beaded Pheasant tail with violet thorax spectra dubbing with a hot red collar for the point and a silver-beaded black frenchies with violet dub thorax was the best for the day.
To fish the Little Brosna you can get your permit online here – https://permits.fishinginireland.info/product-category/shannon/midland-fisheries-group-permit/ which allows you to fish various rivers and fantastic lakes for just €45 a year for Adults.

Lough Sheelin
Going forward, we are going to be receiving regular updates on Lough Sheelin from Gary Mc Kiernan at Lough Sheelin Guiding Services, letting us know how the lake is fishing and what is hatching.

Since the opening of the season, Gary has been on the lake twice, but fishing has been slow, as expected this time of year for Lough Sheelin. However, Gary managed to pick up one nice fish during the week, pulling fry patterns on a fast glass intermediate or a Di3 very close to the shoreline, which is the most productive method this time of year, and indeed, that is what he picked this fish up on. Retrieve is quite fast back to the boat once the fly is on the water.

Fry-style dabbblers and minkies tend to get the best attention this time of year there. We look forward to hearing from Gary throughout the season on everything that is happening on Lough Sheelin. Gary runs a guiding service on Lough Sheelin. Check out his Facebook and website for more information.
