Gary Robinson was out at the weekend after a long absence from the world of angling. His new college timetable allows him an afternoon on Mondays and he jumped at the chance…
Casting a line…
Having had a slow day on the water on Sunday Gary decided to try another part of Galway Bay yesterday and the change of venue brought more than just a scenery. Fishing around rocky outcrop used as a roost by sea birds Gary confirmed suspsions that there was good rough ground fishing, first with the fish finder and then with the first cast of the day. He was expecting pollack but was not disappointed by the 2lb wrasse that hit the soft plastic lure.
A welcome ballan wrasse
This proved to be the first of many fish caught over 2 hours with nearly a fish a cast to keep him entertained. The smallest on the day was 1.5lb. The mark is just out of reach of shore anglers and too rocky for boat anglers, so he’s looking forward to returning to try his luck again.

Gary discovered the thrill, freedom and pure joy of kayak fishing almost by accident. After purchasing kayaks with the intention of paddling trips with his long-suffering partner, he started to assess the suitability of such a craft as a fishing platform. Some internet searches showed him that he was not alone in his thoughts. America and Australia already had blossoming populations of kayak anglers. Needing no more encouragement, he set about rigging his first sit on top kayak and transforming it into a fishing platform to gain access to some of the more inaccessible waters. Now into his fifth year of kayak fishing he shows no sign of slowing down.
Last Sunday September 7th Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association hosted their last fly-fishing competition of 2014 and Michael Flanagan has the results here…
Last Sunday the Clonhugh Cup was up for grabs, and also on offer was the Tommy Mc McCormack Cup for angler of the year. The lake produced some super fish, and it was a rainbow of 1.975kg that stole the show. In recent times quite a few rainbows have featured from Owel, which is classed as a brown trout fishery. It was a good day for local anglers and Ciaran Newman of Lynn finished 2nd wit ha brown trout of 1.135kg. Eugeen Fagan, originally from Multy now a seasoned Dub, was 3rd with 1.075kg. and young Frank Keena finished 4th with 1.010kg trout.
Top junior angler was Niall Tyrrell with a fish of 0.480kg.
Owel winner Mick McCormack
Tommy McCormack Cup
The Tommy McCormack Cup is presented to the angler who produced the best gross weight of fish from L.O.T.P.A. competitions in the season. Mick McCormack was in cracking form all during the season on Owel, and had a combined weight of 8.130kg to take home the Tommy McCormack Cup.
Is this the end?
That’s the last L.O.T.P.A. club competition of 2014, but on October 12th, the last day of the trout season, they host the end of season competition. More on this in the coming weeks.
Aussie outing
Aishling Carroll and Justin Brady on Owel
Aishling Carroll of Moyliscar is back home on holidays from Australia, and is having a ball in her hometown. This time around Justin Brady of Kilmore Victoria in Australia is on board, and he is nuts on fishing and shooting. Justin is having a ball here in Mullingar and we had some lovely trout from Owel earlier in the week, and we are planning a day at the pike before he heads home.

Michael Flanagan reports on a pike fishing session on Lough Ennel where old an new both caught pike…
Last week Stan Ryan and pal Justin Gordon had some cracking pike from Ennell. It was certainly hard going in flat calm conditions, but we had some lovely pike on a variety of colourful Lures.
Stan Ryan anda pike on a Zalt.
Justin had 3 pike on spoons trolled at snail pace behind the reliable Honda, and Stan had a few new Zalt lures that the Ennell pike could not resist. David O’Malley has a few Zalts left and they will work as we drift into the winter months.

Colum Walsh in our Limerick office reports that Jack Killeen, Limerick, caught this fine 4 lb Salmon on the Mulkear River last week at the Long field stretch. Jack hooked his fish not long after starting his day fishing on Monday 1st September, on a silver and red Flying C.
Jack has been angling for salmon on the Mulkear since 1949 and can remember back to days of using large and heavy greenheart rods, some which were home made.
Tommy Hickey and Jack Killeen on the Mulkear
On the day in question Tommy Hickey aided Jack in the landing of the fish.
Conditions on the Mulkear at present continue to run into low water levels as a dry spell is forecast for the coming week.

Lough Melvin was fairly slow. Anglers reported a few sonaghan caught but the going was tough and each fish was hard earned. There was very little effort for salmon and I have not heard of any caught to date.

There was fair water on Monday (0.22m) but thereafter there was dry weather and the river fell as the week progressed to give low summer conditions. The gauge average for the week read 0.13 metres and the river was understandably quieter with only 6 visiting rods fishing over the week and only a few salmon recorded.
On Monday, Pierre Rumeau recorded a 2½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. On Tuesday, Bernard McNeilis reported a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8 and on Sunday, Niall Hosey accounted for a small grilse caught on worm from beat 8.

The Drowes ran at low levels once again all week. There were few rods fishing but there was a few grilse recorded. There seemed to be a few more salmon about this week, probably due to the big spring tides, but most rods reported that the fish were very dour and hard to tempt by any method.
