Marlene McLaughlin reports from Cashel Trout Fishery:

A lovely autumnal feel to the air makes trout fishing at Cashel a real pleasure. Newcomer, George Forrest (Newcastle Upon Tyne) bagged one and lost one. Martin Bradley (Dungiven) released six trout which all took buzzers. Donegal’s Shaun O’Doherty released one which took a black/green wet fly. Conor Gallagher and Noel Christy (Derry) released four and one respectively using a cat’s whisker. Derek Sandy, Chris Sandy and Eamon Kelly also from Donegal banked nine in total which took wee buzzers while Daniel Reilly and Michael Loughlin (Maghera) had a great day. Daniel bagged three trout weighing 8lb 9ozs which took a bloodworm.

Reminder to skippers that bluefin tuna recreational fishery will be closed for the rest of the year, Irish Times

SEA anglers and charter boat skippers are reminded that the bluefin tuna recreational fishery remains closed throughout 2014. Inland Fisheries Ireland (IfI) and the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (Sfpa) have released information in relation to the recreational catches of bluefin in Ireland. European fisheries regulations governing the catching, landing and sale, state that unless a member state has assigned a portion of their quota to sports and recreational fisheries to target these fish, no such fishing can take place…

Angling ambition at Roughan Lough, Mid-Ulster Mail

Ambitious plans to transform a Coalisland beauty-spot into a training lake for Northern Ireland’s Angling team could turn the area into a mecca for fishermen and women. The newly formed Roughan Angling Club has acquired the rights of the 50 acre Roughan Lough on a ten year lease, and intends to stock the lake with rainbow trout. A spokesperson for the club said it intends to make the lough a training lake for the national fishing team as well as for angling coaches. ..

Perch on pole at Blessington

Andy with a perch

Andy Teticu fished Blessington Lakes with his dad, Gioni, a number of times in the last couple of weeks and target species was perch, Andy’s favourite fish.

Andy lands one of his fish

Andy was fishing with 8m long pole “to hand” using maggots/worm as hookbaits with dark Sensas groundbait laced with chopped worms and dead maggots. The swim was very deep so pretty heavy rig was required. Andy was using 3 lb Maxima Chameleon main line, 2 lbs Shimano hooklength and 14 Tubertini Series 1 Red hooks.

The float was hand made Mochkov Drift Beater 6 grams float.  These waggler style floats are ideal for fishing  the deep swims and strong tow when keeping the rig still is difficult. The tactic prove succesfull and Andy managed to catch a few nice perch, one brown trout and a few big roach over 1 lb.

Still a few salmon taking despite low water on Munster Blackwater with one winning our 'Catch of the Week'

Ian Powell reports that salmon are being caught in spite of very challenging conditions on the Munster Blackwater…
We have had 12 fish to 13lb. in the last 3 days for just 35 rod days, which is remarkable considering the challenging low water conditions.

Salmon
A fine 10lb. fresh salmon released by Rob Green (UK) on the lower river.  This fish wins our ‘Catch of the Week’

The weather is set to continue dry and sunny for the coming days and as of Sunday evening the river height is down to 0.09m and steady at Ballyduff. There is good visibility at about 6 feet throughout and water temperature is  13.0ºC .
The odd fresh fish is moving on the lower river and the tidal reaches below Lismore are reported to be full of fish but they are not taking there either. Prawn is the most productive method at the moment.

Prospects:

It is encouraging to see fish starting to be taken on the prawn.
There are high tides of 4.1m peaking mid-week which may encourage fish to move and take.

Boat gang strikes in dead of night – Irish Independent

Independent fishermen are being forced to the wall by organised gangs of robbers who have stolen millions of Euros worth of maritime equipment.

The thieves again struck in Dun Laoghaire Harbour last Tuesday, where they are believed to have used a boat to ransack and steal equipment from three fishing vessels and a small angling craft.

It follows near identical raid on boats in Courtown Harbour in Co Wexford three weeks ago. Boat owners around the country have been increasing their security and stowing away expensive outboard engines. But the gangs, believed to be Eastern European, are now targeting commercial fishing boats for expensive navigation and emergency equipment…

We have SKY TV staying with us for four nights and they will be fishing for four days. This is sure to bring in some great publicity for Cork Harbour.

Float fished mackerel does the trick for Wexford guide

Wexford Guide Sean Jordan of Bass fishing Wexford enjoys fishing with good bass being the reward.  He reports:

This week we were offshore where we saw sprat and sandeel in absolute biblical proportion shoals less than a km from the shore.  Arriving at a Bass mark we also saw the surface layer sparkle with sprat, and sandeel, all our lures were ignored no matter what was tried.  The good old tactic of float fished mackerel wasn’t long about turning our luck around, meeting several good Bass to the deadly tactic.  The weather is starting to play ball at last, and hopefully we’ll be meeting a few more over the next decent tidal cycle starting this weekend.
