Perfect water still at Lough Inagh after rains improve weekend's salmon and sea trout fishing

Colin Folan reports that Lough Inagh has had its greatest flood since Easter as three days of intense rain provided the fishery with a complete water transfusion…
A lot of Salmon that were trapped downstream in the lower end of the system, have moved upstream with ease.  There are some fresh fish to be seen, however most of the running fish are coloured.  There is also a movement of good sized Sea Trout around the two pound mark.
15 Salmon were recorded for the week.  Local Ghille Michael Van Mourek fished a couple days and caught and released 3 Salmon to 9lbs from Corloo and The Derryclare Butts on a Lemon and Grey and Badger.  Dan O Donovan and Eugene Greoger from Cork fished Lough Inagh on Saturday and having rose 10 Salmon, landed 3 to 6lbs, and 5 Sea Trout to 2lbs were needless to say delighted with their day afloat.  Well known Dublin lady angler Deirdre Herbert fished The Derryclare Butts for a morning and landed a Grilse of 5.75lbs. on a Lemon and Grey.  Deirdre also released a number of good brown trout also.  Declan and Cian Hanley from Galway boated 7 Sea Trout for their day on Lough Inagh.  Dublin brothers Richard and Hugh Maguire fished the whole fishery in 2 days and had 13 Sea Trout to 2.5lbs.
At present water levels are perfect and should remain for the coming days.

Loughs Derryclare and Inagh lie in the lovely Inagh Valley with the Twelve Pins (Bens) of Connemara rising steeply to the west, and the Maumturk Mountain range to the east. There are two short connecting rivers, which contain four river beats. The fishery has spring salmon, grilse, sea trout and large indigenous brown trout. In recent years the fishery has seen a resurgence of fish numbers, and in 2010 – 2012, the fishery has produced Salmon to 15lbs, Sea Trout to 5lbs and Brown Trout to 12lbs.

Michael McVeigh of the charter boat Rosguill in Downings, Co. Donegal reports that he is happy with the fishing at the moment as his anglers do well with tope, shark and over the sand…

Weather August has been unsettled causing days fishing in shelter.

Limeburner has been fishing well including some reasonable Cod to around 5 pounds. Sand OK. Tope good. Sharks good enough – Rosguill had 6 one day and 3 on another. Wrecks have not fished as good for Pollack & Ling this past 10 years. Big Turbot & Brill mark still not producing.

Mackeral have been acting “funny buggers” but managing to get enough each day.

Tourist anglers enjoy the fly fishing at Adare

Kristen Monson flyfishing
Having never flyfished before Kristen was delighted with her catch

Paddy Dunworth reports on a couple of recnet trips to the Maigue where the trout are entertaing tourist anglers…

Kristen Monson and Brad Horner from California are touring Ireland & staying at The Mustard Seed located in my hometown. They’re holidaying in style as next day they were leaving for Ashford Castle. Brad had never flyfished and Kristen was new to fishing so they took the opportunity to learn with a half-day session with me.

Last week arrived in Ireland for a month, getting some experience with a company in Shannon prior to finishing his University studies on Economics next year. He hails from Turin but does not have many opportunities to fish, so Monday was his first time really flyfishing.

Edo Di Rosa had two brown trout and lost a couple more, but will do better when he relaxes his strike

It was an extended half-day session and we fished the Maigue at Adare. There were some heavy showers but that did not deter Edo who was full of eagerness to learn. He netted two browns and lost 2 good fish, a bit too strong on the striking as are most when new to flyfishing.

Big improvement in salmon angling on the Laune over weekend

Kieran Conlon salmon
Kieran Conlon returned this beauty of about 12 lbs.

Billy Downes reports that on Sunday 31st August the water level was at a lovely 1 foot on the gauge at Johnston’s and running clear. This was a great improvement on a few days ago. There were a lot of fish met on Friday. One angler at Johnston’s met five fish and landed two. Three Cork anglers met ten fish between them. Our own members met and landed some nice fish also, some fresh and some slightly stale.

Gavin O'Shea and salmon
Gavin O’Shea with his first Laune salmon about 8 lbs from the Rock pool, , what a lovely fish.

Following on from Friday’s successes, Saturday and Sunday were disappointing with few pulls and few fish being seen. The only good thing is that the water is still rising at the Laune bridge and now at over 1m which makes the river down stream very fishable for the next week. I still rate the coming week as the best chance for a fish as this is as good as the water is going to get for now at any rate.

6 Bass, a skipper and the dog all enjoy Courtmacsherry

Skipper Mark Gannon from Courtmacsherry reports:

The Lady Patricia skippered by Jim O Donnell ventured out for the sharks yesterday, still a big sea running but conditions much improved, a good slick was started but by 3 pm with no run the anglers decided to try the bass fishing again in the Estuary. The bait tank was loaded up with joeys and they started fishing with a slack stream.
6 fish were landed in total, the heaviest a fish of 75 cms.

Courtmacsherry - Aug (4)

Courtmacsherry - Aug (5)

The results were no surprise as the bass fishing in the estuary has been excellent, but live bait seems to be the best method as the water is very cloudy. We landed fish to 9lbs approx on both Monday and Tuesday and on Thursday had fish to 6 lbs.

Its a full week since our last shark trip (23/08), which was the last time the weather was suitable for fishing offshore. That day we landed 3 blues to 60 lbs and had some garfish just under the Specimen weight. The rest of the week we combined a mixture of fishing for pollack on the inshore reefs and anchored up for Thornbacks.

All roads lead to Garrison for trout championships on Lough Melvin – Irish Times

The 35th Lough Melvin Trout Championships was an outstanding success as the sleepy village of Garrison in Co Fermanagh welcomed the influx of 266 anglers from all corners of Ireland and beyond to four days of top-class angling for sonaghan trout on nearby Lough Melvin.

Those wily little fellows, synonymous with Melvin, displayed fantastic fighting prowess as they foraged in areas of open, deep water in search of mid-water planktonic (daphnia) organisms. From an angling perspective, it became a lottery to locate them….

Environmental lobby threatens legal action over escaping salmon – Irish Examiner

An environmental lobby group has threatened to take the Information Commissioner to court as part of its ongoing attempt to obtain a report on the escape of 230,000 salmon in Bantry Bay last February.

Solicitors for Friends of the Irish Environment have written to the commissioner to say they will take High Court action if he fails to indicate when he intends to make a decision on whether to release the report.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney has already refused to release the report, prompting the FIE’s appeal to the commissioner….

Angling: Andrew shines for Ireland – Dromore Leader

Local angler Andrew Rea was one of Ireland’s star performers at the recent 30th Youth Home International fly fishing competition at the famous Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire, England.

Andrew, who was fishing in the Ireland team for the second year, was one of the 14 strong team that travelled to Grafham Water on August 3 to fish against Scotland, Wales and the host nation England.

During the two practice days the Ireland team and its mentors did their homework, identifying the hot spots, the depth the fish were feeding at and the killer flies. As a result the team was full of confidence on competition day….
