Bream on holidays but UK anglers do well with tench, roach and hybrids around Longford

Nigel Barnes from Preston was over for his annual fishing trip to Ireland and Melview Lodge in Longford, Nigel who has been fishing Ireland for many years now knows just what’s expected when it comes to fishing the wild waters over here. He started out prebaiting a water that he had fished last year which produced 100lb+ nets of Bream and Tench but this year turned out a little different, starting off the same way with prebaiting the swim the night before the first day produced Hybrids and Roach.

The second day saw a few Bream caught and made us think the Bream were about to come on the feed after a couple of weeks of no show, but during  the days that followed the venue did produce some good Tench, Hybrids and plenty of Roach. For the last few days Nigel changed venue and prebaited but no still Bream, however he was rewarded with some nice catches of Tench along with plenty of Roach and Hybrids.

Nigel said it’s nice to catch a few Bream when fishing in Ireland but if for some reason they’re not feeding you have to change your approach and make the best of it, and if this means catching Tench, Hybrids and Roach well that will do for me.

Nigel still on the Tench at his second venue.

Barry from the UK who is also a regular to Ireland and Melview Lodge decided this year to bring his wife Carol with him, the Bream were also a bit shy for them with Barry catching a few to 2lb.

However they managed a few good Hybrids along with Roach and Perch at the venues they fished, the fishing was not helped by the high winds and Carol being dragged into the water after trying to save Barry’s umbrella from blowing into the lake ( sorry Carol had to mention that one ) but everything turned out OK in the end.

Gilthead bream for bass anglers at Wexford mark

gilthead bream from Wexford
Kenny's first ever Gilthead bream

Kenny Hartnett from Co Kildare is a keen angler and recently he was fishing in Wexford at a popular mark…

With a south westerly wind and sunny conditions my friend and I headed out to try to land an early morning bass.  As we where wrecked from an  all night shift  catching dog fish  we set or rods with the last of our rag worm. Ten minutes in and my rod gave a tap then another I said to David “We’re on here bro!”

Sure enough I picked up the rod to the amazing sound every angler loves to hear  of the reel taking off . “Here we go!” I shouted, only to turn the tension and take a better grip and off it came . Disappointed David asked was it a bass and I thought it probably was. That’s the way it goes, the one that got away”, I said.

Half an hour later we moved our gear about 800 yards as the tide stated to rise and set the rods again. As before my rod gave a tap, then another. This time I was prepared and struck hard and away he went left and right which I thought was strange for bass because the usually go one way with the current. After a twenty minute scrap  a beautiful Gilthead bream surfaced  which we landed. This was my first one which was really cool. I had no scales with me but I reckon he definitely over 5 lb  . It made my day and he was released to fight another day.

5 Nations Fly Fishing Championships Stirling Scotland 2014

team
The Irish Team

The first ever 5 Nations International Fly Fishing Championships were held in Stirling Scotland  from the 4th to the 10th of August 2014.

The competing nations were Ireland, England, Scotland, Belgium and France.

The Irish Team

Competitors from the five nations competed over two days on the lake of mentality, Carron Valley Reservoir, the Devon River and the River Carron. The organisers also used the Endrick River and the upper reaches of the Clyde for team practice.

Angling conditions  in Scotland were similar to Irish conditions with very low water levels, so the competitors had to call on all of their skills to tempt lethargic fish.

As always local knowledge can have a major bearing in these events, and the Scottish team were installed as favourites for the event.

The Irish team showed great promise during practice but a series of unfavourable  beat draws didn’t do their chances any good during the competition days.

The event was won by England who finished ahead of event favourites Scotland.

This was the first ever 5 nations competition and it was a major success for the countries taking part. Hopefully this event will go from strength to strength and we all look forward to next year’s event at a venue to be confirmed.

The Trout Anglers Federation of Ireland were represented by the following anglers,

Eugene Nolan, Liam Conroy, Robbie Flaherty, Tony McCrave, Stewart McGraine, Robbie Phelan, John Lawlor, Micheal Keane, Richard Cremin, John Willis, Tom Healy and Leo Foley. The team was managed by Tom Ankettell.

Poisonous fish in our waters, The Kerryman

FEARS of a surge in numbers of a highly-venomous fish have been sparked on the north Kerry coast after at least one angler hooked no fewer than three in one night this week. The Ballybunion angler caught three Weaverfish in a single night’s fishing on Thursday prompting fears of an explosion of the species in our waters. What it lacks in size, the Weaverfish certainly makes up for in the dose of venom it can deliver from incredibly strong fin bones on its back. It is the most venomous fish found in Irish Atlantic waters…

Investigation into Limerick fish kill continues, Limerick Leader

INLAND Fisheries Ireland are continuing to monitor the River Loobagh in Kilmallock following a slurry spill which resulted in an extensive fish kill last week. A series of samples were taken which have been sent for analysis. Pending the results of the analysis a decision will be made by IFI concerning a prosecution and any other legal actions that may be warranted…
