Rain freshens thing up on the Munster Blackwater

Stephen Carrick

Ian Powell of the Blackwater Lodge reports:

August 1st : We have had some rain (7mm) which freshened things up a bit, but with no perceptible change in water levels for now.
There are very few rods out fishing, but in the last few days we have had some success.

On the 29th. Stephen Carrick (Tallaght) caught his First Ever Salmon on his first ever visit to the Blackwater. It was a sparkling 4lb. grilse on spinner from the lower river. It was the ninth First Ever Salmon caught this season.

Yesterday (31st.) Daniel Desmoulin (France) scored the Joint Best Bag for one day, landing four fish to 5.9lb. on Ballinaroone & Kents on the lower river. Two were absolute sparklers & two had been in the river a week or two.
The weather looks as if it will break somewhat in the coming days, so hopefully we will get more rain and a rise in water.

Some Nice Coarse Fishing in Bailieboro

Some of the Bream Taken During the Session in Bailieboro

You would imagine that the high temperatures and blue skies of recent weeks would have presented challenges when coarse fishing in the Cavan area. Not the case on a recent visit to one of the smaller lakes in the Bailieboro area which produced some very nice bream, hybrid and roach fishing while the temperature gauge was in the mid to high twenties. On choosing a swim sometimes you never know how things area going to turn out!

Feeding was simply a few feeders of darkened crumb with no particles, bites came immediately, lots of them but small fish, roach, perch and some skimmers. Then there was the heavy nod of a better fish, a nice bream, one of eleven better fish which included hybrids. All were taken on red maggot on a size 12 hook. When the bites slowed a few red maggots in the feed brought the fish on again. Fishing was into 2m at 35 turns on a scorching bright day.

Excellent estuaries with good fishing in Waterford

Absolute Fishing in Tramore report that the estuaries have been fishing excellent of late, but the breeze from a westerly direction has helped on the rocks giving perfect conditions.  Conditions to dream about last night (Thursday) but they had to fish through some awful weed. Perseverance paid off, 1 clean cast resulted in a fish just over 6lb.

Flash Floods on Mulkear River Disrupt Angling – Afloat

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is today (31.07.14) continuing to investigate the polluted condition of the Mulkear River and its tributary, the Bilboa River. These rivers form part of the Mulkear Special Area of Conservation and are essential nursery and spawning areas for Salmon, Trout and Lamprey.

At the present time, the Mulkear River is extremely discoloured by suspended solids, disrupting angling and severely curtailing other uses….

Irish Angling Update – 31/07/14

Bass fishing from the east Cork shore is a popular pastime in the summer months

The mixed weather conditions brought some much needed rain to inland waters but some fisheries are in dire need of more water to liven up the fishing.  It was generally very hot here in Ireland, too hot, not just for the locals but sometimes the fish as well who are not used to the warm conditions.  Sea anglers enjoyed every minute of it but some English anglers down in Cobh complained that it was too much, but they caught some fine fish nonetheless.  The Met office has forecast broken weather with slightly cooler conditions for next week so maybe all anglers will be happy next week!

Blue shark
Hans Olav Hagerup wins Catch of the Week for this incredible photo of his blue shark caught off the cork coast

Despite the low water conditions there were some nice salmon in the 8 to 9 lb. range caught on the Cork Blackwater at Fortwilliam.  It was a very quiet week for angling on Lough Currane where the hot weather kept angler off the lough in the day time and only a few sea trout were caught late in the evening.  Rain is badly needed on many salmon rivers in the Cork Kerry area to improve the fishing. Better water levels are badly needed for good fishing on the River Laune.  The hot weather has left many of the Connemara Fisheries with low water conditions which did not help good salmon or sea trout fishing but a few fish were reported at Lough Inagh. The Balmy weather played havoc with the salmon fishing at Delphi but nonetheless some nice salmon were recorded during the week. It was the same at the nearby River Erriff where sea trout were caught in good numbers along some nice grilse despite the hot summer weather.  The hot summery weather together with extreme low water conditions made it hard for salmon anglers on the River Moy but 164 salmon were recorded for the week.  There was some nice salmon reported from the River Duff near Bundoran including a first time salmon for young Kathy Carty.

Andrew Ryan from Clonanav reported some very nice trout fishing for visiting client’s flyfishing with nymphs and dry flies on the Suir and tributaries.  Daddy Long legs flies produced some nice trout from the shore on Lough Ree and there were good trout fishing reported from Lough O’Flynn. There were some nice trout taken on the Green Peter on Lough Ennell and Owel last week in the late evenings.  There was very little day time fishing for anglers fishing on Lough Sheelin last week but anglers who fished very early in the morning or late evening were rewarded with some good trout fishing.

The Erne anglers held a coaching session at Irvinestown in Co Fermanagh where many young anglers caught plenty of fish given great coaching.  John Potters won the All Ireland Championships held on many loughs in the Lough Oughter system at Killeshandra.

Angling guide Mick Flanagan and a Dutch client connected with some good pike on lures in the midlands near Mullingar during the week.  Angling guide Kenny Sloan had a client out from Clare on the loughs near Foxford last week and they enjoyed good sport taking some quality pike on fly and lures.

Ruairi Coleman from the Swords angling centre reported that his clients were catching some nice smoothounds, codling and dabs among a range of species from the shore marks in north Co. Dublin. Wexford guide Sean Jordan brought Clive bass fishing for the first time and he managed to land five lovely fish on lures.  Charter skipper Donie Geary had parties of English and Irish anglers out deep sea fishing outside Cork Harbour and they enjoyed a huge range of species.  At Bella Vista, Jim Cloghessy fishing with a Danish guests tried blue shark fishing with great success and Hans Olav Hagerup got into the water to pose with his big blue Shark from a small boat and this wins our Catch of the Week  Angling guide Richie Ryan reported a busy week with clients fishing with him on his inshore boat in Cork Harbour catching pollack and bass during the week on a range of methods. Charter skipper Mark Gannon reported a great week for his anglers fishing out from Courtmacsherry both on inshore waters and out deep where blue shark and many other species including bass for caught.  Charter skipper John Fleming reported a huge range of species for parties of angler’s deep sea fishing with him in Galway Bay.  He then went after blue shark on another day and captured four on his first time trying on his boat Brazen Hussy 2.  There was good shore and deep sea angling reports for a wide range of species in the Mullaghmore Bundoran area of the coast.  Charter skipper Michael McVeigh reported some good wreck fishing for his client deep sea fishing with good pollack, ling and some cod and coalfish among good catches.

There is plenty of more news on competitions, other news and news clippings as well as the publication of the Lough Ree survey report in this week’s update.  In this hot weather please be careful around water especially if you are going afloat and at all times please wear a lifejacket.  Enjoy your fishing and be safe,

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke

5 for Clive in Wexford

Wexford Guide Sean Jordan of Bass fishing Wexford introduces Clive from Laois to the joys of Bass fishing and there’s no doubt he’s well and truly hooked !.  Sean reports:

Laois native Clive enjoyed some good sport early week, his first ever Bass lure fishing session got underway and within 20 minutes he met the first one, only very briefly though he lost it, he was to lose 2 more, before finally getting his hands on a lively schoolie, when that mark went quiet it was off to the next one. A 30 minute walk, and Clive was in position to cover Bass exiting a large bay on the ebb, within 10 minutes he was into a Bass on a komomo SF 125, over the next hour he met 4 more losing 1 of them 2 were in the 60+ cm bracket in good fishing conditions it must be said, although the last 7 sessions have all seen Bass caught, hopefully a consistent catching pattern is emerging.

Shark fishing slows in Cork, but one angler takes a tiger by the tail and wins our Catch of the Week

Blue shark
What a way to pose with a shark

Jim Clohessy was out with some Norwegian anglers last week fishing from boats in the Bellavista fleet. Amongst this intrepid crew was Hans Olav Hagerup, an angling guide himself. Hans explained to Jim how his anglers fish catch and release for big halibut and as these fish are too big to get in the boat for a photo, the anglers get in the water instead. Little did Jim know what this would lead to when Hans had his first Irish blue from a small boat and also wins our Catch of the Week!

Hans and his fellow anglers were so impressed with the quality of the blue shark and conger fishing that not only will they be back, but Hans is hoping to bring more anglers here next year as part of his business.

Plenty of good species for parties of English and Irish anglers deep sea fishing with charter skipper Donie Geary outside Cork Harbour.

Charter skipper Donie Geary reports on deep sea fishing for his clients outside the Cork Harbour area from his base in Cobh.

It’s not often we complain about the heat but this weekend was certainly the exception, for the past 4 years I have a group of four English anglers for 3 days fishing. We left at 9.30am  after deciding to try for blue shark,75 minutes later and 10 miles south east of Roches point I dropped the bag of pre/frozen rubby dubby over the side and rigged the rods to prepared for the action. The boys were catching many whiting, gurnard and the odd doggy  and we got our first run at about 1.30 pm when Dave’s balloon vanished for a few seconds and resurfaced about 50 metres away but that was it.  The next run was at 3.30 when Steve’s rod bent over this time, the fish was hooked and 15 minutes later we boarded what was the only shark of the day a fish of about 50 lb. and released him quickly.

On Sat. we decided to drift sand for species and we were joined by Richie Fortune from Ardeen B&B, and what a day’s fishing we had, not so much the quantity of fish but the quality. we landed whiting to 2lb. red gurnard to 3lb. ling, pollack, coalfish, pouting, wrasse, and of course dogs and Richie had the pleasure of landing his first Megrim.
On Sunday we decided to do some reef fishing and headed for Ballywilling rock which is about 3 miles from Ballycotton island
We had a busy day with plenty of Conger to 30 lb. ling to 10 lb. pollack to 9 lb. and a lot of the smaller species on top. Steve, Dave and Paul will return to England to day and the only complaint they have is the heat.
