Pike on fly and surface lures in Mayo area

Kenny Sloan reports that with high water temperatures and the lack of rain most fishing has been difficult, although some action can still be had with surface lures and fly, especially early morning…

Getting stuck in…

Michael Duane from Co Clare visited the Foxford area and teamed up with local Guide Kenny Sloan.  Michael decided to try his hand at pike fishing as he had never caught one before, having only been sea fishing  previously.

Fishing surface lures he tempted around 12 pike, successfully landing 5. He is now hooked on pike fishing and hopes to return when the weather is cooler and try different methods.

Go fishing with Kenny…

Kenny Sloan has become synonymous with big pike in the Foxford area. Kenny can guide you on the big wild waters around him Conn and Cullen but he also has a lot of smaller waters at his disposal and even if the wind blows he always has some where to fish making your break as productive as possible.

Guidelines for handling pike

pike

Download: Pike Handling and Conservation [.pdf 850 KB]

When landed, the fish should be laid flat preferably on a protective mat and the hooks removed with a suitable tool such as long handled artery forceps or a long nosed pliers. Anglers may find it useful to wear protective gloves. Sometimes it can be easier to release the hooks by working very carefully through the gill covers.

The use of pike sacks can be used for the short time retention of fish enabling them to recover prior to weighing or photography. When weighing and photographing fish, the pike should be cradled and supported properly to avoid injuring the fish. A pike sized weigh sling should always be used if the fish is be weighed.

When being released, the pike should be held carefully in the water to promote recovery until it is ready to swim away. At all times, the pike should be returned to the water in the shortest possible time.

Low water levels hamper salmon fishing on many rivers in the Cork Kerry area

Eileen Carroll Murphy from the IFI office in Macroom reports on salmon fishing on a number of Salmon fisheries in the Cork Kerry area.

FOR WEEK ENDED SUNDAY 27TH OF JULY 2014

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

Angling Report 28th July (Email to Laune Angling Report)

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 28th July water has fallen back to under 1 foot on the gauge at Johnston’s.  This water level is fine the problem is there seems to be very few fish around.  There were a few anglers who had some sport with sea trout but pulls from salmon are scarce.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters cost only €25 per day up to the end of July.  From the 1st of August permits will cost €35 still excellent value compared to other fisheries and the chances of a fish.

Beat 3:  With the water fallen back the best prospects on Beat 3 is for some good trout fishing with the single handed rod.

For Beat 3 Permit Costs click on: Beat 3 Permit Prices 2014

Prospects: With the Cromane nets finishing on the 31st prospects should be getting better but not a lot will improve without a few feet of water.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25

Michael Flanagan reports on the trout fishing in midlands…

JASON BOATS A FEW CRACKERS

I teamed up with Mullingar lad Jason McCarty last week for a few days, and we had some sport catching trout pike, and perch. The first day we trolled and spinning across Owel, and boated good pike and lovely colorful perch. Jason also spent a day on Lene and had a lovely rainbow trout over 2lbs, on a Rapala Lure. Jason will be back on the Midland Lakes quite soon, and hopefully will catch some more super fish.

ALAN ON OWEL

Alan Thomas was back drifting across the Midlands last weekend and had a few nice days fishing. Alan is from Carrickfergus and his good lady is from Tullamore, so every weekend they drop down to meet the family Alan goes fishing. The Alan lad has had some lovely days in Lough Aishling Fishery in Edenderry, and also some enjoyable days on Owel .Last weekend we fly fished and trolled on Owel and had some lovely fish. The trout have moved out deep as water temperatures are up on 20 degrees. Plenty of small fish are on the move and a few big fish are also showing.

PETER FISHING

Hard to believe the nights are closing in as we fish till dark on the lakes. The Peter fishing is producing some nice fish, and in the coming days some nice fish will be caught on Owel, Lene, Sheelin and Ennell just to name some of our super lakes. Denis Vaughan of Delvin is in top form on Ennel land I photographed him with a lovely fish last week from Ennell. It’s hard going on Ennell but he trout are top class.

Preliminary report on Lough Ree survey published

Download
Preliminary Observations in Relation to A Fish Stock Survey of Lough Ree in Spring, 2014.

A comprehensive survey of adult fish stocks in Lough Ree (Shannon Catchment) was carried out in late February/early March 2014. The preliminary results in relation to some of the findings and a comparison of these data with previous surveys for other Irish lakes have been prepared and can be downloaded in full here. This was the first such survey carried out on L. Ree so no comparison with a previous data set for this water is possible.

Download
Download a copy of Preliminary Observations in Relation to
A Fish Stock Survey of Lough Ree in Spring, 2014.

The Lough Ree the survey involved the selection of 200 randomly selected locations for sampling. A train of survey nets was fished overnight at each of these locations. During the course of the survey all live brown trout taken in the nets (and in good condition) were
released back into lake, all live pike 70cm and greater in length (and in good condition) were released and all live cyprinids/perch 25cm and greater in length (and in good condition) were also released back into the lake. Prior to release all of these fish were measured and a proportion were scaled for subsequent growth and age analysis. A total of 76 pike released were also tagged with numbered floy tags. The purpose of this exercise was to carry out an adult pike standing crop estimate for the lake – returns will be obtained from a number of pike angling competitions to be held in April, 2014. A comparison of the number of tagged and untagged pike captured by anglers in these competitions will hopefully allow one to generate an estimate of the stock.

As an addendum to this survey a dredge sample was taken at each of the 200 netting sites to establish the distribution of both Zebra mussels and/ or Corbicula (Asian Clams) throughout this water body.

A quiet week for angling on Lough Currane in the heatwave.

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

24/7/14 Again Lough Currane was on the quiet side and not surprising with little to no wind and variable and very hot, so it’s not surprising both fish and anglers alike are keeping a low profile, but at least one angler did get a bit of action in the C&R department and that was Mr. Brian Stark, who caught a nice 1 ½ lbs. brown trout on the fly, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com I will finish on a poetic note, on a fishes right to freedom. Here, here, to the water of the brave and the home of the free, so remember please when you catch me please release me and let me go.

25/7/14 Anglers saw another hot day on the Lake and very little action even though local ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com did report that his client, Mr. Mark O’Malley of the UK, caught 1 Junior on the drift. And for the rest of the angling community they failed miserably in their duties and with very little wind this is understandable, and what wind was there was West light.

26/7/14 The wind was in the NW, but sadly my Noble Anglers couldn’t manipulate their flies or lures and make their fish to invest and as on one ghillie politely said no motorbikes, no fish, no photos, and there is no argument from the redundant paparazzi?? But joking apart with theses hot conditions what do you expect, even the great St. Peter would be looking up to the heavens.

27/7/14 Again Lough Currane was on the hot side, with a Gentle NW wind, and very little action, even though Local ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com reported that his client Mr. Mark O’Malley of the UK, caught a Trout on the drift, but other wise all quiet on the western front. You could say my fishing notes are getting like that old TV series, Peyton Place, one continuous story. Sorry for this but my Noble Angers are failing miserably in their duties in all departments. Bad conditions or not.

28/7/14 Mr. Mark O’Malley of the UK, again takes all the headlines in the trout department with 2 trout to his rod, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com and for the rest of my Noble anglers the least said the soonest mended. On the weather front wind N light with reasonable cloud cover this morning then the sun broke out and that was that.

29/7/14 Sadly the weather takes all the headlines, Wind NW fresh with bright sunshine and very few anglers manipulating their flies or lures and on that note, I will go straight to an anglers point of view, right or wrong you decide. Any good today I asked my Noble Anger he replied, I am taking up golf, it’s a dam site easier than the fishing and you can publish this and be dammed, and as luck would have it I could hear a pro angler in the distance shouting out 4?

30/7/14 It Was a better fishing day? But alas my Noble Game fish thought other wise and my Noble fly Anglers weren’t far behind them, and you can’t catch fish from the high stool, or if you are a convert to the Golf you can’t get a hole in one in the 19 hole, “cheers” Wind W fresh and overcast and humid but cooler than the last few days.

Bloody red shrimp invades Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, BBC News

A new invasive species, the bloody red shrimp, has been discovered for the first time in Northern Ireland in Upper Lough Erne.
It was found during a fish survey for the Environment Agency. The bloody red shrimp was first discovered in Ireland in 2008 in the Shannon River catchment in the Republic of Ireland. Unlike similar native species it can be seen swarming in shaded areas during the day…
