Rossin and Slane Anglers Sea Trout Competition a Great Success on the Boyne

Winner Mark Campbell Receives his Trophies from Brendan Jervis

Rossin, Slane and District Angling Association ran their Michael Mullen Memorial Cup sea trout competition on the River Boyne at Oldbridge today Sunday 20th July. It was never going to be easy with the very very low water conditions, extremely warm weather with only a light breeze and a fairly bright day although somewhat overcast. There was a senior and a juvenile event and 22 anglers turned up to support both of the clubs events. The day was as much social as competitive with a BBQ being held afterwards at the Curley Hole for all of those who had participated in the competitions. There are currently lots of small sea trout in the Oldbridge Fishery and it was hoped that some of the fish would oblige during the day despite the unfavourable conditions and they did. Many undersized fish were caught and released and a few nice fish were hooked and lost. Fishing took place from 9.30am to 3pm with the weigh in taking place at the Curly Hole car park at 3.30pm.

Knockaderry fishes well early in the mornings

Work in progress on the harbour at Knockaderry

David Tantrum secretary of Waterford City & County Fly Fishing informs us that due to poor water clarity at Carrigavantry anglers are adviced to fish Knockaderry which is fishing very well at the moment,  especially early in the mornings.   It is not unusual to get algae blooms and they can clear quickly depending on the weather.

Knockaderry is a hidden gem in Waterford.  With work on the new harbour progressing well.

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore.  The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!

Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.

New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

Nice Roach and Hybrids on Lough Ramor

A Slightly Better Hybrid

A visit to Lough Ramor in Virginia Co. Cavan produced some nice fishing this evening for hybrids, roach and some perch. Low and clear water conditions accompanied by a gentle breeze and temperatures in the high teens. Feeder tactics were very simple and nothing complicated at all. A simple cage feeder with a fine darkened ground bait and double red maggot on a size 12 hook. Bites came nearly straight away in the shallow bay but consistency was hard to achieve. Bites dried up for short periods but as the light started to fade the hybrids came into the own with hard lightening fast bites which were difficult to hook on occasions. Plenty were hooked though and boy do they fight. Hybrids are great little scrappers. When planning your next trip why not give Lough Ramor a go!!

Irish Angling Update 17/07/14

Innisacrra Bridge - Congratulations to O'Donovan Engineering and thank you for the fabulous job on Rooves Bridge. 25 countries, 25 flags. The Bridge has never looked so well. The boys in the factory even came in over their holidays to complete this job. Well done to all involved

It’s all systems go at Inniscarra. Great preparations have provided great results and the scene is set for the 25 nations competing in the 4th FIPS-ed World Feeder Fishing Championships hosted by the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland. The official opening will take place this evening with Mr Fergus O’Dowd TD, Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources attending at the Aghabullogue GAA Complex after a ‘Parade of Nations’ through Coachford Village from 6pm. This is a great opportunity to show case Cork as an ideal place for angling and for the world to see what Ireland has to offer.
Salmon and trout anglers are optimistic this week as rain is forecasted. Their mid-night rain dances will soon pay off. Galway has already had a good few showers yesterday and Kylemore and Lough Inagh have reaped the benefits with the lakes full and plenty of fish in the system. So far this week the fishery has produced 11 grilse to 5lbs for just 13 rod-days. An excellent run of sea trout was also reported at Erriff. 849 sea trout were recorded passing through the counting facility at Aasleagh Falls between the 7th and the 13th!
The Munster Blackwater reported a lot more fish being caught this week and some lost. The Glenmore beat saw nice grilse up to 4lbs on the fly. Henry Anson and his two sons Oscar and Archie made the most of their break with both lads catching their first salmon. The Drowes is still on a go slow but coming rain should soon perk things up. It was the same story in Delphi with only 6 fish being reported for the week. Sean Dempsey was the exception however as he landed a sea liced fish of approx. 14lbs from the Turn pool on a Dempsey nymph and a 9lbs fish from Salmon City on Finlough on Jungle Bunny Bibio.
The Moy water levels were still low and this influenced angler’s ability to catch fish in good numbers. Further upriver, Jean Jacques Daurat from France did get a fine 12 lb. salmon. Carrowmore Lake boasted some excellent sea trout as did the Currane. Bob White of the UK ended a 60 year famine when he caught his first Currane salmon on the troll while out with Ghillie Michael O’Sullivan. What a great way to celebrate his 70th Birthday!
Lough Sheelin saw a few chilly nights and as the old saying goes ‘When the temperatures go down the fish come up ‘. Evening time saw great fishing with the sedge, green peter and murrough doing the business. Heaviest fish of the week was a 5½lb trout caught by Dundalk angler Peter McArdle using a sedge.
The Corrib saw the boys in blue descend for the Garda Annual Competition on July 10th. The trout were dazzled and shy but yet 20 anglers detained 12 fish. A nice bit of rain following that saw conditions improve. 6 anglers fishing the Oughterard area for 15 rod-days reported landing 66 trout and all methods worked well.
After the hard tropical weather experienced by Lough Mask and Carra it’s good to see things pick up. Sedge fishing has improved in the late evening. Ballinrobe angler Richie Cameron had a lovely 4lbs trout on a dry sedge in the shallows over the weekend.
Lough Conn came up trumps for Peter Roche from Co. Mayo where he caught a superb 6.25 lbs. Lough Conn brownie on a Green Peter Dabbler. A super fish. Peter was fishing in the Cormorant Rocks area.
Despite difficult conditions Ballybay Angling IFI 2 Day Match saw some good bags of fish being taken. U.K. based angler Mick Smith caught over 40kgs on the first day and Irish based Peter Walsh had a bag of just over 20kg on day two.
Congratulations and well done to our Irish Team who had great success in the Tronixpro Home International Shore Championships 2014 Scotland. The Senior Mens, Ladies and Under 16’s teams all won Gold, while the Under 21’s Youth team took fourth place.
The big boys hit Wicklow with Kit Dunne’s customers enjoying the spoils. David Bailey’s day went from good to great when he ventured out with Kit as he caught a superb 37lb (16.78kg) Tope. While down in Kerry, Ullcatch’s Eugene Farrelly landed a tope which had been originally tagged in 2006. This 34.83lb (15.8kg) fish was first tagged SW of Little Samphire island in Kerry and loved the area so much he decided to stick around.

Jim Clohessy – 78cm 10.6lb – Beautiful fish – now part of the Bass Tagging Programme 2014 is our 'Catch of the Week' winner
Jim Clohessy – 78cm 10.6lb – Beautiful fish – now part of the Bass Tagging Programme 2014 is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner

Guide Richie Ryan was at the start of the bass tagging programme in Cork Harbour this week. He tells us things are looking good and a number of fine conditioned bass have been caught. Well known angler Jim Clohessy caught the cream of the crop on the day with a cracking 78cm/10.6lb bass. This excellent fish is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner. This fish is now back swimming with a transmitter fitted as well as an ID tag. Scale samples were taken which will determine the exact age as well as genetic samples. If you wish to take part in this programme, details are available ‘here
It’s good to see the mackerel have made their way to Red Bay and Hamish Currie is back out in search of predators. His catch this week saw big female spurs and a number of smaller topes.
Swords Angling Club member Ruairi Coleman also reports a lot of mackerel about which makes the fishing easier and he chalked up quite a few species including smoothies, small tope, small bass, dogs, whiting, flounder and a few nice sized codling.
Kinsale skipper Michael Dennehy has plenty of sharks about as well as some good cod and reef fish on light tackle.
All in all a good week with more to come. So take care, tight lines and remember a life jacket will float, you won’t so wear it.

Tight lines especially here in Ireland,

Nancy Hearne

Canadian tourists enjoy Foxford pike fishing

Happy Canadian anglers with one of their Mayo pike

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports from the IFI Ballina office:

Pike fishing has been slow due to the warm weather and low water levels. However, fishing among reeds and lily beds still provided some good sport with surface lures or fishing the fly. Visiting anglers from Canada, John Duffy and his wife Alena, spent a day with local guide Kenny Sloan on some of the pike lakes in the Foxford area catching 5 pike with many lost on the surface.

Great hatches of Green Peters stir up the fish on Lough Arrow

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports from Lough Arrow:

On Lough Arrow, the nightly hatches of Green Peter have been excellent over the last week and the fish are now taking them with great enthusiasm. In the areas around Ballindoon, the mouth of the River Unshin and the Thumbs, catches have been very good, with Simon Steele accounting for 6 trout up to 3.5 lbs. in one session; four of these were returned. Other successful anglers included Gerard Martin with 4 trout, all to Green Peter patterns, best at 3.25 lbs., Noel Clinton with 3 fish to 3 lbs. and Thomas Walsh with a total of 11 trout to 5.5 lbs.

Superb 6.25lb Lough Conn brownie for Peter Roche

Peter Roche, Co. Mayo, with his superb 6.25 lbs. Lough Conn brownie

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports from Lough Conn & Lough Cullin:

Mixed weather towards the end of the week saw a return to form for day-time trout fishing on Lough Conn. Peter Roche from Rathduff, Co. Mayo, had a memorable day’s fishing around the Cormorant Rocks area, with six fine fish ranging from 1.25 lbs. to a beauty of 6.25lbs., all caught on a Green Peter Dabbler.

Fishing out of Pontoon Bridge Hotel (www.pontoonbridge.com), Roy Walsh and Jimmy Brown, Wales, had five trout averaging 1.5 lbs. However, their best fishy was just short of 3 lbs. Two of their trout took dry olives and three came to Green Peters. Numerous smaller fish were also caught and returned. Elsewhere, Graeme McWilliams and Grainne Foy, UK, boated four trout for 5 lbs., while Steven Fox, Dublin, had a trout of 2 lbs. and a salmon of 3.5 lbs. in the south Conn area.
