Piscari Fly Looks Ahead to Imminent Opening of Trout Season

Peter Driver of Piscari Fly is back with his weekly roundup of the fishing scene

Almost there…

So next Saturday the 15th of February we see the start of the rivers and Lakes opening up around Ireland, it’s possible to go and drift across the corrib maybe pick up an early season trout. We always had good success around lime island that time of the year heading out of Ballindif. If the weather keeps nice and steady it could be worth a drift somewhere around them rocks. We’ve got some really good early season trout there over the years.

There’s some rivers down south open on the Blackwater system in and around cork and Limerick. We see the first of our rivers open up like the Bride, the Blackwater, the Funchion and the Awbeg and so if conditions stay favorable would be also great to get out on a river and maybe pick up an early season wild brown trout. Tight Lines and we wish everyone a safe and happy season to come as we get into pushing our way into March and look at everything opening up.

North Kildare Anglers Social Evening

Sunday evening saw our usual annual trip to North Kildare up in Sarsfields gaa club in Newbridge. The north Kildare angling club put on a great show again this year for all their members and anyone outside of membership who were more than welcome on the day. Lots of people turned out for a fantastic evening, great display of stands there with finger food also provided. It was a great evening all together thanks so much for everyone coming along and delighted to meet everyone and have a chat. It’s a real benchmark of the season starting as we are getting out of the winter and into the spring when we go to North Kildare and meet everyone and everyone’s excited and picking up their few bits and fly patterns and stuff like that for the common season. So great night had by all and yeah great event thanks for the invite as usual from North Kildare Anglers.

How’s The Fishing?

The Pat Denton memorial competition took place in Rathdrum Trout anglers up on their lake in Rathdrum. Fished on a beautiful crisp day, there were plenty of fish caught to keep everyone warm. 1st place went to Barry Enright, 2nd place to Stewart McGrane and in 3rd place Jamie Conway. So congratulations to all the winners. Well done great absolutely to have competitions like these in a small angling club like rathdrum. fantastic little club. They will hold their club AGM on the 25th of February at the clubhouse on Brewery Lane, Rathdrum at 8pm. So if anyone is interested in join Rathdrum anglers you can join them by getting in touch with secretary Mark Driver or contact through Facebook. They are now also on a website called on the water.ie Check out rathdrum trout anglers there where you can join membership or buy your day tickets https://www.onthewater.ie/club/rathdrumtroutanglers

This is a great facility to have for the club this website makes it so easy but yeah well done to all the winners again and all who took part. A good day was had by all.

AWOL Winter League

So Awol winter league finished up at the week with the final round held at Laois Angling Centre. With Shane Bird winning the league for the second year running . Huge congratulations. 2nd was John Bird , brilliant result for father and son. Third position there was a tie between Marius Lincevicius and Donal Monahan on 23 points each. Going back to fish points as in the rules. Donal had 33,562 and Marius had 41,660. So Marius was third overall. Brian Conway won the longest fish at 78 cm, well done Brian.

What’s Coming?

While we are prepping for France – Peter and Mark will be heading to The International Artificial Fly Show next week in St Etienne – all Piscari eyes are fixed firmly on the Irish Spring Angling Fair happening down in Ardaire Springs, Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny on the May bank holiday weekend. A fantastic weekend of angling, fishing, chat, a great social outing. One for all anglers, young and old, new or experienced – come along for the weekend it’s so important to support the likes of these shows or they just won’t continue so if you have any plans for the May bank holiday weekend you want to get your kids in fishing, this is the place to be come down one or two days, kids go free. Lots of activity, lots of great demonstrators and speakers over the weekend and people that know their stuff and you can pop along and ask questions while sampling and testing out a bit of gear.

Fishing with Steve – Episode 41 – Back to Monaghan!

Steve McDonagh is back with another episode on his YouTube channel – this time he heads back to the Monaghan lake that got the better of him the last time, when he had a frustrating number of dropped runs. This time he is hoping to make amends…

We’ll let Steve take it from here:

On this Pike Fishing episode of Fishing with Steve, I head back to the Monaghan trout lake to fish it for the last time this season. I also get to test out my brand new Boatman Vulcan Baitboat.

It was a rough start to the day with user error on the boat causing me all sorts of issues. Add in a mid-morning move of swims and it was nearly lunchtime before I got fishing. A couple of missed runs, and some amazing underwater footage add to the drama before I finally put a nice Pike on the bank.

Another rollercoaster pike fishing session in Monaghan.

If you like Steve’s videos, don’t forget to like his work and subscribe to the channel!

Dromore Angling Club hold Aidan McLaughlin Memorial Cup

sdssf

The Annual Aidan McLaughlin Memorial Cup Pike Fishing Competition was held by the Dromore Angling Club on Saturday.

The Competition took place at Belnaleck in Co. Fermanagh. The weather conditions were good if not a little on nippy side, with the temperature rising to only 3°C. After a crisp, frosty start the first pike was caught by Darren Dickson, a fine fish of 11lb 2oz which was going to take some beating! However, the second fish was soon hooked by Dean Irvine, and after a tough ten minute fight this beast tipped the scales at a magnificent 17lb 2oz.

This seemed unbeatable but these competitions do not end until the whistle blows. Not to be outdone, Darren caught a second pike of 8lb 2oz, leading the competition by a mere 2lb 2oz. Despite Dean’s best efforts and a dropped take in the last minutes of the competition, he could not catch Darren’s total. Darren therefore won the competition and received the perpetual trophy until next year, but Dean received the award for the largest fish caught as well as the award for second place, which was an ample consolation prize.

All fish were released in good condition to fight another day.

Irish Angling Update 🎣 07 February 2025

We had the usual mix of weather over the last week which impacted angling to varying degrees depending on where you wanted to go fishing. In short it was another slow week for most of us. We had more strong winds, particularly at the weekend, which at times made boat angling impossible in many places. It was wetter than usual on much of the west coast with up to 199% more rain than normal and fields nationwide are somewhere between saturated and waterlogged, keeping the rivers somewhere between high and flooded. It’s been nearly a couple of degrees warmer for much of the country, though still frosty at night recently, so fish remain slow to feed most of the time. Those clear skies have seen the south east live up to its sunny reputation with nearly twice as much sunshine as we’d expect for the time of year, but that could have been a positive depending on your point of view…

Dominic catches first Salmon of the season on the Waterville Fishery

The big news this week is that another spring salmon has been caught. Lough Currane’s anglers had put down another quiet week during which with strong winds had made the lake unfishable at times. But then on Wednesday Dominic McGillicuddy caught a fine 9lb fish which is Lough Currane’s first salmon of the season. Staying in Kerry, Anglers interested in entering the first lottery draw for a Roughty River brown tag have until midnight on Sunday, 23 February to apply. For more information see IFI opens first draw for Roughty River brown tags. There are still a couple of days to enter the brown tag draw for the first round of tags on the Easkey, anglers can apply until the 09 February. Anyone not motivated enough to fish for spring salmon in cold conditions but who is looking forward to salmon fishing later this year will enjoy Andrew McGall’s Summer Grilse on a Clearing Spate video.

Sea anglers had some great sport in the south east last week. Saul Page did particularly well in the Irish Winter Shore Angling Festival. He won 1st place in the individual competition and was also featured in the winning teams for of 2 man and 4 man competitions. Up in Mayo there was a good turn out for the The Michael Quinn Memorial Competition. The way the catches came it was open to the end but Billy Gilvarry had enough done to win the senior event and Danny Harty took the honours in the Juniors. It looks like the annual National Mullet Club Irish meetup may be becoming one of the main events in Irish mullet fishing. The winner of last years event was recently announced, so congratulations to Jim Murray for winning the NMC Irish Shield with 7lb 3oz thick lip mullet.

Kevin Leahy with around 250 small roach from Scarriff

Coarse reports are thin on the ground. There have been some decent catches at times around Athy, and we’re also heard of a decent net of fish caught at Portumna, but it is from Scarriff where we got our only full report of the week. There were hundreds of roach caught but the weights were in the low single digits. Congratulations to Ian Kelsey and Kevin Leahy who tied for First Place.

Coarse and pike anglers have a lot of reading ahead of them in Dan O’Neill’s latest River Whispers blog. Junior and novice anglers will certainly find a lot of interesting tit bits that should help improve their angling. This week Dan looks at pike, perch and dace on fly, feeder fishing, method fishing and more…

And now the weather…

There will be a  cold, dry and bright start for most on Saturday morning; cloudier across eastern counties however with some showery rain in places. Similar conditions will persist through the day. Cool with highest temperatures of 4 to 7°C in a light northeasterly breeze. There’s another cold night ahead with frost and icy patches in some areas as temperatures fall to between -2 and +3°C in a light northeasterly breeze.

Sunday will be mainly dry and cloudy, with just a few light showers near eastern and southern coasts. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8°C with light to moderate easterly winds.
Sunday night will be milder with Monday turning cloudy and breezy with outbreaks of rain possible in the northeast and southwest. Highest temperatures of 4 to 9°C. Hopefully the fishing picks up…

Don’t forget to double check the forecast before heading off and if you’re going to sea, check the tides.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

For more information on the daily conditions, all the craic and news be sure to check out Vincent Appleby’s Salmon and Sea Trout blog for regular reports with back dates, petitions, public consultation notices, readers letters and videos and more of what’s happening on Currane.

Jim Murray wins NMC Irish Shield with 7lb 3oz thick lip mullet

mullet

Jim Murray from the National Mullet Club is back again to share the news about their Irish Mullet of the Year…

This fish turned up during the annual NMC Irish meetup which is fast becoming one of the main events in Irish mullet fishing in my opinion.

It had been a reasonably successful day with 2 smaller fish landed and another couple which came off; just as I was about to reel in and make tracks to meet the other members in the local I remembered a piece of advice I’d overheard earlier. Namely that some decent fish can be taken in the margins;  I’d been fishing at range all day so decided to plonk one rod in close at about 15 yards for the last cast of the day.

Well I can only say that advice was truly excellent as within a few minutes a rattle developed into a decent pull and this 7lb 3oz thicklip was the result, expertly netted by NMC members Mark & Cliff (visiting from the UK) who also obliged with the camera.

36th Irish Winter Shore Angling Festival

This report from the organisers of the 36th Irish Winter Shore Festival:

The 36th running of the Irish Winter Shore Angling Festival took place from January 26th until February 1st  2025. The competition is one of the most prestigious 3 day events fished in Europe, anglers return year after year to renew friendships and to vie for success.

The organisation of the event was extremely difficult for both the organising committee and competitors alike. The lead up to the event was a worrying time due to ferry disruptions, winter storms and unusually slack tides which restricted bait gathering resulting in many withdrawals. The initial entry of 132 was reduced to 115. The competitors had travelled from England, Wales, The Netherlands and Ireland North and South.

The event headquarters was once again The Hotel Curracloe where check in commenced on Wednesday evening. All but 31 competitors had registered at 10pm closing.

A good gathering of competitors then enjoyed the hospitality to be had in the hotel bar where the craic was good and where challenges were offered and taken in great spirit.

Check was completed on Thursday morning by 9.30am.

The first session was fished on Ballinesker beach from 12noon until 5pm. The beach was pegged by the ever efficient team of Stephen Glynn and Paul Tyndall and ready for the anglers in ample time to set up.

The anglers were treated to glorious weather which was very much appreciated while they prepared their rigs for the fray.

Competition commenced on time at 12 noon and 110 baited rigs of a multiplicity of designs hit the water within moments to target fish with a minimum permissible length of 18 centimetres.

Fish were recorded from the first cast, and it continued throughout the session. Reports along the beach were that good numbers were being recorded and some good fish among them.

Best round fish of the day was a magnificent 60 centimetre bass for Paul Tyndall (IRL), second best was a 36 centimetre coalfish for Roy Arnold (UK). Best flat fish, 32 centimetre flounders were recorded by Saul Page (UK) and Chris Isaac (UK). Best cards (Super Pool) were Ged Stevens (UK), 677 points. Rob Tuck (UK), 555 points and Troy Francis (IRL), 512 points. These were the leading 3 anglers on day 1.

A total of 877 fish were recorded on day 1, all returned to the water alive.

Zone positions/winners on day 1

Day 2 was fished between Ballinoulart Beach and Morriscastle Beach, 2 zones on each. The pegging team had once again prepared the beaches in ample time for anglers to set up and prepare their offerings for the day. Their preparation was once again carried out in glorious sunny weather.

12 noon once again saw the competitors enter the fray and once again fish obliged from the start. As the day progressed some good fish were reported along the beaches although the fishing itself was patchy in some areas.

Best round fish of the day was a 46 centimetre cod for Tony Thomas (UK), second best was a 45 centimetre spur dogfish for Richard yates (UK). Best flatfish was a 34 centimetre flounder for Kevin Barber (IRL) , joint second were 33 centimetre flounders for Eugene Andrews (NI), John White (UK), Wayne Hamilton (IRL) and Joe Wales (UK).

Best cards for the day were Sean Ivory (IRL), 793 points. Ged Stevens, 756 points and Ben Arnold (UK), 701 points.

Saul Page at work at his neat set up.

Leading the field after day 2 was Ben Arnold (60/1198  points) followed by Troy Francis (60/1071 points), both with double zone wins and Ged Stevens in third place (59 points).

691 fish were recorded on day 2, all returned alive.

Zone positions/winners on day 2

Day 3 was fished on Curracloe Beach. The forecast for very high winds forced the pegging of the beach to be done up to the right towards Raven Point. This unfortunately created a very long walk to the furthest pegs. The wind did not get up to the heights forecast but was still high enough to have lots of dry sand flying about.

Fishing commenced at 10am on a full dropping tide for the day. This unfortunately led to the inner bank being cleared while there was still quite a depth of water in the gully.

The fishing was very sporadic with some areas bereft of fish for quite a while. Most anglers eventually recorded fish but there were blanks. Reports along the beach were that only a handful of anglers were catching consistently.

As the day progressed the wind increased making it a lot more uncomfortable and many were glad to see lines in called at 3pm.

544 fish were recorded for the session and returned alive. No round fish were recorded in zones 1 or 3, the best round fish, a 30 centimetre bass for Neil Griffin (IRL) was the only one recorded in zone 2, second best was a 23 centimetre rockling for Mike Fox (IRL) in zone 4. Best flat fish was a 35 centimetre flounder for Steve Potts (UK), second best was a 33 centimetre flounder for Chris O’Sullivan (IRL).

Best cards for the day were Ronan Doherty (IRL), 425 points. Saul Page, 410 points and Max Roche (IRL), 404 points.

Zone positions/winners on day 3

The hard working results crew had the final standings calculated and displayed at 6pm. There were no queries.

A full room of competitors and guests enjoyed an excellent well prepared and professionally served meal after which the presentation of awards took place.

EFSA Ireland Chairman George McCullough addressed those in attendance prior to the awards ceremony. He thanked the competitors for their participation and their perseverance over the 3 days of competition, especially day 3 in some very trying conditions. He thanked the venue pegging team for their excellent work. He also thanked the results committee for their excellent work and also EFSA Ireland Hon. Secretary for his work in the organisation of the event. He thanked the management and staff of the Hotel Curracloe for their support and professionalism throughout the event.

He then thanked the sponsors, firstly main sponsor Tronixpro for their continued support for the event, also Inland Fisheries Ireland for their continued support and finally Hotel Curracloe for hosting the event. Finally, he thanked those who had gifted prizes for the raffle and wished everyone a safe journey home and hoped to see them again in 2026.

The awards presentation then took place under the stewardship of Hon. Secretary Warren Doyle and Hon Vice Chairman Tommy Squires.

Longest fish and Super Pool prizes were first awarded followed by daily zone prize winners. These were followed by the team prizes.

The evening’s proceedings concluded with the raffle. There were lots to choose from. Tronix and Vercelli rods, Tronix Reels, lots of other Tronix goodies and various items of fishing paraphernalia donated by individuals. There were some very happy people among the winners.

Species recorded were: Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Spur Dogfish, Small Thornback Ray, Cod, Coalfish, Whiting, Rockling, Sea Bass, Flounder, Dab, Turbot.

The 2 person team winners were Saul Page and Richard Yates, retaining the title for a second year. Second were John White (UK) and Brendan Wall (IRL). Third place was taken by Ian Bowell (UK) and Rob Tuck.

The 4 person team winners were Saul Page, Richard Yates, John White and Ben Price (UK). Second were Ken McCoy (UK), Gary Hughes (UK), Ian Bowell and Rob Tuck. Third were Stephen O’Donovan (IRL),Barry O’Rourke (IRL), Troy Francis and Mike Fox.

The individual winner was Saul Page, retaining the title for a second year and winning the Waterford Crystal Decanter and a Tronixpro Competition Performance rod, while Ben Arnold finished second and Troy Francis came third.

Sea Angling on the East Coast – Curracloe to Cullenstown

2nd Mícheál Quinn Memorial competition a great success

The Mícheál Quinn Memorial competition is fast becoming a must-fish fixture on the Connacht sea anglers calendar, with the second running of the event last weekend proving a great success.

Tom Keal from Galway Bay SAC wrote up a great report of the day, which we reproduce below:

The Michael Quinn Memorial Competition was a day to remember, with 25 anglers gathering to honor the legacy of a true angling legend.

The day began with the infamous “CBI warm-up walk.” Let’s be honest, it’s less of a stroll and more of a test of endurance, but we all know it’s part of the charm. By the time we reached our marks, legs were stretched, lungs were working, and everyone was ready for action. With a strong southerly wind at our backs and a rising tide, conditions were challenging but manageable.

Fish were playing hard to get during the brighter hours, but sea trout made appearances as the tide progressed. As always, some anglers managed to pull off last-minute catches that shook up the standings right at the end. The juniors deserve special credit for their determination and effort—they gave it everything and did themselves proud!

Gift Bags

A huge thank you to the organizers for the brilliant gift bags handed out to all participants. Packed with treats and angling essentials, they were a lovely touch that added to the day’s enjoyment. It’s gestures like this that make events like these so special—fair play to everyone involved!

The Acres Bar – Results, Prizes & Craic

After packing up and shaking off the saltwater, we made our way back to The Acres Bar in Killala for the results and prize-giving ceremony. The bar was buzzing as anglers gathered for raffles, discussions about “the one that got away,” and plenty of laughs over a well-earned pint or two. Prizes were handed out in great style, and the camaraderie on display was second to none.

 Final Results

*Juniors:*

– *1st Place:*Danny Harty (Galway Bay)

– *2nd Place:*Sally Gilvarry (Killala)

– *3rd Place:*Rian McDermott (Galway Bay)

*Seniors:*

– *2nd Place:* Timmy O’Sullivan (Galway Bay)

*Special Awards:*

 Supporting Croí

Something to highlight is that this competition donated all proceeds to Croí, a charity dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke in Ireland. This added an extra layer of meaning to an already special event, as anglers came together not only for sport but also to make a difference in their community. A fantastic €750 was raised for this great charity in Mícheál’s memory.

Reflections on the Day

The Michael Quinn Memorial was everything we hoped it would be—a fitting tribute to a great man and a reminder of why we love this sport so much. From juniors to seniors, every angler gave their best in tough conditions, showing true grit and sportsmanship.

A massive thank you to the organisers for putting together such a well-run event, and to everyone who participated for making it such an enjoyable day. Here’s to more great days on the water in 2025—tight lines until next time!
