Specimen tench from Ballyhoe as spawning takes over

Stephen and one of his better tench

The Ballyhoe Lakes were the place for specimen tench recently with tench to 7 lb landed reports Garrett O’Reilly…

It looks like alot of the silvers have been away spawning this last week or so along with the bream as both seem to be hard to find on both of the Ballyhoe lakes at present, even the perch seem to have gone else where too.

The tench have been playing hard to get at times also and as the lull in fishing has been hard work for some , others have again had spells of good fishing with mixed results but again some good tench have shown up.

Stephen from Dublin had a 7lb tench

Dublin angler Steve had a good session last week with tench to 7lb on the nose and would have had a 100lb plus bag if he landed every fish. 2 days later the same peg and the same prebaited area close to the lillies produced nothing for another well known tench angler but as they say “thats fishin for ya “.

I’m only guessing but things should soon get back to normal pretty soon. Last week I had the great pleasure of watching them frolic and spawn at Camlough Lake at very close range and watched the fishing there suffer greatly too as the fish had other things on there mind.

And the end of May Steven from Lurgan also managed to break the 6 lb barrier with some fine fish in his haul of tench from Ballyhoe 1.

Will Freeman wins Ottewill 3 Day Feeder Only Festival

Will Freeman won the Ottewill 3 Day Feeder Only Festival which finished yesterday evening. The match was fished at a couple of venues on the Reservoir including the new stretch at Coachford which will now be closed for two weeks in advance of the World Feeder Fishing Championship.

  • 1st Will Freeman 71.650kg.
  • 2nd Frank Van Waelderen 70.750
  • 3rd Rob Wooton 58.100
  • 4th Steve Ringer 56.250
  • 5th Tommy Pickering 56.050

With a lot fish off spawning it was considered a very good result and a real testament to the quality of the fishing on Inniscarra Reservoir. The heaviest single bag was 37kg of mostly skimmers caught by Will Freeman on A section at the Garden Centre. C Section on the Championship stretch also fished well with bags to 30kg landed.

3rd Place for Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Association

Julie celebrating her catch getting into the net,

The Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Association competed in the Ladies Fly fishing International against England, Scotland and Wales.

The ladies enjoyed the beautiful countryside and the well-stocked lake in Wales on the Trawsfynydd Lake in Snowdonia, on the 20th to 22nd May 2014.

The Welsh ladies gave us a great welcome with a harpist, school choir and their famously delicious “welsh cakes”.

Ireland, captained by Julie Gerry of Maynooth, won “bronze” taking third place.  The overall winners were Scotland.  England were second, and Wales took fourth place.  It was one of the closest competitions ever held with Wales and Ireland each having 33 fish, just 4 short of England’s 37 while the winners Scotland caught 44 overall.   This was Scotland’s first win “away from home” for 20 years and celebrations went long into the night.

Top Rod overall was Janice Sharp from England who caught an impressive 11 fish for a total of 19lb 10 oz.

Top Irish Rod and winner of the “heaviest fish” of the competition was Madeleine Kelly from Hilltown who caught 5 rainbows and a brown trout weighing 11 lbs 2 oz.   Her “heaviest fish” was 3lbs 1oz.

Ireland had 4 new caps on their team – Cher McCrave, Lisa O’Hagan, Pauline McClenaghan and Pat Byrne and they all thoroughly enjoyed their new experience of fly fishing at  International competition level.

Irish Team on match day
Irish Team on match day

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the two practice days, the weather was very mixed with spells of soft rain and sunshine with the wind switching direction each day. Thankfully no thunder and lightning like Monday when everyone headed for the shore at great speed. Temperatures were around 12*c.

On Thursday, the competition day, the weather was cold and cloudy with a change in the wind to a cold easterly direction.

Hubert Smith, the Irish Coach, from Dundalk, with his friendly, calm and encouraging manner organised and motivated the team. Team spirits and togetherness were higher than ever before. Hubert was ably assisted by Mick McShane, our flytyer, also from Dundalk who tied us beautiful flies all week and got the flies “spot on” for the final day as can be seen by the close results at the end of the final day.

Living the dream, Leitrim Observer

I have often mentioned on just how lucky we are to live in County Leitrim. Not just because of the beauty of our scenery, our renowned friendliness or the quality of the angling diversity this county possesses. An often forgotten advantage of residing in Leitrim for the angler is simply location, location location! The other night while going over some Ordinance Survey maps, looking for some possible trout rivers I had never fished, I had a sort of epiphany…

18 salmon last week on Delphi including 19lb 9oz fishery record

salmon
John Somerville landed a magnificent 19lbs9oz fish off Finlough

Its been a busy week at Delphi where the biggest salmon of the modern era was caught on May 29…

01/06 Good catches have continued here at Delphi since my update with 18 fish landed. There were plenty of highlights during the interim with five people landing their first ever salmon; Paul Wymes landing seven for the week; but the spotlight this week has to be on John Somerville who succeeded in not stepping on his line this year and landed a magnificent 19lbs9oz fish off Finlough. This pips Urs fish of 2011 by 2 ounces and makes it the heaviest fish of the modern era.

The fish was taken off Boat Point on Fin using a type 7 sinking line on a Delphi Collie. He was also using a 6wt Hardy Sintrix. The battle ensued for an hour until the fish was finally netted by Paul Wymes, which in itself was rather fitting as John had landed Paul’s fish of 17lbs12ozs last year. Needless to say great celebrations followed as the fish did the rounds of many establishments in the Cornamona/Clonbur area.

With some good rain falling on 01 June, water levels should rise again and I’m hopeful that the good catches should continue.
