Pike among the reeds and the rushes

Monaghan pike

Steven Neely from Rookie Bass Angler Blog tells us of his battle among the undergrowth for an excellent days fishing,

We set off as usual for Co. Monaghan for a spot of pike fishing …… We tried a few usual spots and then decided to explore some new ones.

Surrounded by trees, bushes and reeds these were not easily accessed.

Trying to weave your way under trees to make a short cast up a long the margins seemed to be the only approach.

Not an easy way to fish and a lot of getting stuck in over hanging branches but it certainly paid off.

The fish were switched on and the sport was top class.

All the action came to soft plastic lures – Fiiiish Black Minnows, Flash Arrows and generic weed less shads.

As well as some pike we had a few bonus (tiny) perch. Despite their small size they were fin perfect and works of art.

At one stage I had 8 takes in a row from pike swirling in the shallows – Sadly it wasn’t to be ….. I had serious issues with setting the hooks, partly due to severe over excitement on my part.

It was great though to get out and get a breath of fresh air and some sunshine. It won’t be long now until the sea temperatures start to rise and the sport on the coast starts in earnest.

Fishing on the Slaney slow, but 103cm springer caught by first time angler

big spring salmon from the Slaney
Matthew Summerfield's second salmon - 103cm, estimated at 24/25lb

Brian Stevens, Slaney River Trust, reports on that while salmon fishing is a bit slow on the Slaney some big salmon have been landed…

Fishing on the Slaney has been quite slow for the first week with only about 10 fish landed. The exception to this rule was rookie salmon angler Matthew Summerfield from the UK who, on his first days salmon fishing on Saturday,  landed a lovely 8 lb bar of silver followed by what is largest fish off the Clohamon beat in many years.

The fish, which was too large to fit into the net, measured 103cms and had a girth of 46cms which equates to 24 / 25lbs!

What a first day, most of us will never get a magical 20 pounder, it will be all downhill for him from here.

See the 2014 gallery at www.slaneyrivertrust.ie for more pictures of Matthew’s fish and a few others caught this week.

Shark’s travel tale stirs up frenzy, Irish Examiner

A RECENT newspaper headline announced: “As great white shark Lydia closes in on UK, Brits brace for bloody mayhem on holiday beaches.” The “man-eater” with “razor-sharp teeth” will soon arrive here, we were told. She was “on course for Ireland”. What nonsense. Lydia seems to have abandoned her plan to visit Europe; latest reports say she is heading northwards towards Greenland but…

The angling tragedy which has left one man dead, a second missing and a third fighting for his life may have been caused by a freak squall. The men, all from Co Armagh, were on a fishing trip to Lough Ree in the Irish midlands when their boat capsized in bad weather. Eyewitnesses described how a freak squall roared over the water shortly after the group set out…

“Large fish” once again spawn on Dublin’s River Tolka, Irish Times

IT was a real pleasure to attend opening day on the River Tolka in Dublin last weekend. The river never looked better as anglers, young and old, lined both banks from Cardiff’s Bridge in Finglas to Ashtown and beyond to Blanchardstown to celebrate the first day of the season. Living close to Ashtown as a youngster, the Tolka became my second home during school holidays and weekends. In those days, a bamboo rod, wooden centre-pin reel and a juicy worm was sufficient to bag a few wild trout for dinner…

Lough Ree widely regarded as one of Ireland’s premier angling venues, Irish Times

Lough Ree is widely regarded as one of the premier angling venues in the country. Tourist and home-based anglers flock to its shores throughout the year to enjoy their particular facet of the sport. It is noted for its big pike, many exceeding 9kg (20lb), which can be caught while boat fishing from virtually all locations. Indeed in three weeks’ time, the lough, for the fifth successive year, will host the three-day pike angling world cup and international pike boat festival…

The match was being fish on Black and Yellow Islands, White Island and Concra Wood. The event was organised by Ballybay Angling Association with Liam O’Brien and Sheila Bromley and their team, professionally undertaking all the work involved. It was a five hour match and the all in was called at 11am and the all out was to be called at 4pm. There was a sharp wind and the day changed from bright sunny crisp conditions to overcast with icy rain showers and hailstones. Some anglers were quick off the mark with the majority opting for the feeder. Catches were mainly of roach with occasional hybrids. The fishing was tough on occasions and although challenging it was very rewarding as well. All anglers caught with weights varying from 9.330kgs down to just a couple of grams.

5. Try to find fishing spots close to home that that doesn’t require long car or boat rides.
6. Keep them happy. Take lots of snacks including a treat that usually is not allowed at home. Snacks can help break up moments of frustration and will keep the kids interested.
7. Keep your cool. Expect to be rebating hooks and take out line tangles and knots all day The quickest way to turn children off to fishing is to get frustrated with them.
8. Keep them covered. Use plenty of sunscreen and protective clothing
9.
Keep a fish they catch if that ask for dinner.
10. First Aid Kit. You should have a kit with medical supplies to deal with all manners of cuts and scrapes.
