French anglers in Longford manage some good pike fishing despite weather and water levels

Alain's Pike fell to a float fished Roach dead bait

Kevin Lyons from Melview Lodge reports that bad weather of last week could not stop his visitors getting some good fishing deadbaits…

Alain Renaudin from France who is a regular visitor to Melview Fishing Lodge in Longford was hoping to repeat the success of his last visit which produced plenty of big fish for him, his guide Kevin Lyons said it was going to be different this year due to the bad weather causing very high water levels not to mention the high winds.

Not being able to fish a few of the normal spots we fish this year we set out and fished a few local waters in and around the Longford area.

Fishing various dead baits Alain was still able to catch some cracking fish despite the weather conditions and at one stage both of us managed to hook up to a Pike at the same time.

Kevin said I have to take my hat of to Alain for braving the conditions especially when you are anchored up on a boat and you are having everything throw at you, and I mean every kind of weather.

I’m sure we will be seeing Alain back in Ireland and Melview Fishing Lodge in the future.

Steady fishing leads to good scores at Courtlough Winter League

Garrett Ruigrok reports from Courtlough Trout Fishery which help the 5th heat of the their winter league over the weekend…

Sunday 23rd of February saw the fifth heat of our winter league take place at Courtlough trout fishery with 18 anglers arriving to fish on a very scowly morning.

It wasn’t looking good weatherwise, with a gale of wind blowing in off the Southwest bank, right into the face of anyone on the ‘long’ far bank.

We chatted with the lads, and consensus was that everyone agreed to go ahead with the event. Soon after 10am the gunshot started the fishing and Daanus landed the first fish of the day on his second cast, it was looking up a bit. No anglers had hit their 5 fish per peg limit at the first half hour rotation but two of them had got to 3.

Today it appeared that the shallower (and windier) sections of the fishery were performing best and sinking lines were the order of the day, lures and tungsten nymphs were banking most fish in the early stages.

We fished from 10 until 2 with the anglers moving 4 pegs left every half hour, allowing a full circuit of the fishery throughout the competition.

The fishery had not been restocked for about 6 weeks but had been lightly fished due the 8 weeks of awful weather.  The fish responded well and we had good solid steady fishing throughout the competition and from all quarters of the lake, I think the few milder days during the week thawed them out a bit.

A couple of better fish were landed including a 4lb fish for Pat Nolan and a 7lb fish for Ger Walsh who landed this on a Diawl bach on a floating line.

The rain held off but the wind didn’t and at 2 o’clock everyone retired for the stew while the scores were tallied up

At the finish the winner was  Karl Elliott (Dublin) with 14 fish landed, 2nd was Pat Noonan (Tipperary) with 13, and 3rd was Shane Callan (Dundalk) with 13.

The top 3 received a new Cortland flyline, flybox and penknife and automatic qualification for the final in March.

The final tally of fish landed was a very impressive 158  for the session. With maybe another 30 caught afterwards when a few very brave buzzers hatched and some of the lads fished to fish moving to them.

A big thank you to all of the anglers for supporting the event, looking forward to the next and final qualifying heat on Sunday 9th March.

The fishery is open 7 days a week from 9.30 until dark and all are welcome. All visits must be booked in advance please on 087 2712704.

No rain, no wind and superb pike for Lough Derg angler

Pike from Lough Derg
Pike from Lough Derg

Herman Molenaar  enjoys the beauty of Killaloe, Co. Clare.  This experienced guide offers fishing from boats, bellyboats or from the shore on Lough Derg or the smaller East Clare Lakes. Last Monday Herman guided his friend to one of the best spots and made the most of a day when the weather was finally normal – no rain and no wind! The result was this superb pike caught while trolling deep diving lures.

Lough Fern's weather torments anglers

Don McCloskey with a lovely March Brownie on Lough Fern

John Mc Laughlin, Lough Swilly reports:

Milford & District Fly Angling Club:

The Milford & District Fly Angling Club is now taking applications for membership for the 2014 season. Current club memberships are now also due for renewal.
Appication forms are available from the IRD offfice in Milford or here at the Lough Swilly Angling Centre.
The new brown trout angling season opened on the 15th of February but the weather conditions have kept away even the hardiest anglers so far. If we get some normal spring weather, the lough should start producing good sport in the next week or two.
The Milford Club would also like to inform all members and indeed visitors that under  IFI legislation, Angling on Lough Fern and the entire Lennon system may  only be done by single barbless hook with bait fishing strictly prohibited !
In the interest of conservation of the very precious wild brown trout, the Milford club would like to ask anglers to only retain a maximum of 2 brown trout over 11” per day on Lough Fern.

River Finn opens to perfect water height and Frankie lands first 12lb salmon at Killygordon

John Mc Laughlin, Lough Swilly reports on the salmon fishing in Donegal:

Lackagh

The water height on the Lackagh also began to drop last week for the first time all season.

Club member, Brendan Garland was unlucky not to land the first fish of the Season.

Brendan lost a good fish in the Garden pool on the fly last Saturday morning.

I have no other reports from the Lackagh for the rest of the week but I would expect this to change this week as the prevailing conditions continue to improve and angling pressure increases.

Under the IFI legislation, the entire Lackagh system is strictly catch & release for salmon angling.

The only allowed methods are spinning or fly fishing with single barbless hooks and stictly no bait fishing.

The Creeslough & District Angling club in conjunction with the IFI have carried out some fantastic habitat enhancement over the last 2 seasons. The Lackagh river itself is arguably the most accessable in the whole country with the recently completed walkways and stiles making for a safer and more enjoyable angling experience.

Permits for the Lackagh fishery are available from Sweeney’s filling station, Termon.

River Finn

The River Finn opened again for Salmon angling last Saturday the 1st of March.

Anglers were greeted with a near perfect water height, although the water temperature was still on the cold side.
Well done to Finn veteran, Frankie Elliott who had the first fish ,estimated at 12 lbs from the carry at Killygordon.

There were also reports of a couple of fish lost on the Cloghan Estate waters in Glenfin with Dean Armstrong losing a fish on the fly in the Graveyard and Barry Gallagher hooking a fish in Keys.

I have had no more reports of anymore fresh fish since.

Permits for the Cloghan Lodge Salmon fishery are available here from me at the Angling centre.

Optimism at Blackwater Lodge as the river shows signs of dropping

This was the river below the Lodge on Sunday with the Ballyduff gauge @ 1.77m

Ian Powell of the Munster Blackwater’s Blackwater Lodge reports that the water levels are begining to drop and that there might soon be a chnce to get some real fishing done…

03/04 There are continuing showers that are keeping the river topped up, but the overall level is slowly but surely starting to reduce, & hopefully this will continue in the coming days as the weather forecast – whilst continuing to be broken – is certainly not as wet as it has been in recent weeks (he said optimistically!).

The overall reduction in the level can be well seen on the upper river at Millstreet @ 03.00  today Monday. Last night it was down to 1.02m which is almost as low as it was on February 20 (0.99) and January 30 (0.98m) – the previous lowest levels since the start of the season.

This was the river below the Lodge on Sunday with the Ballyduff gauge @ 1.77m
This was the river below the Lodge on Sunday with the Ballyduff gauge @ 1.77m

A similar picture can be seen on the lower river which got down to 1.77m yesterday. Just a couple of rods ventured out and three fish were briefly hooked, one of which was a very heavy fish and definitely a springer from the way it fought.

Prospects

If the river drops just a little more, the conditions for (albeit heavy) spinning will be much better and the likelihood of springers being met will increase dramatically.

A few more salmon from Currane at the weekend

Andrew Wishart enjoyed catching this salmon

Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby reports that after the excitement of earlier last week Thursday and Friday were pretty uneventful, but things picked up again for the weekend…

01/03 March got off to a good Start for Mr. Peter Keenan and for good reason, he caught a lightening fresh 9 lbs Salmon on the troll while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley, and just for the record there were a few Kelts caught on the troll, 4 were reported.

Peter Keenan had a 9lb salmon from Currane on Saturday

Now for comment of the day which comes from a renowned local Butcher from Caherciveen, “Any thing caught today Vince?”

“Yes,” I replied, “Bob caught a fine 9 lbs Salmon on the troll”
“That’s good but could you please tell me when a Local Gillie will catch one?”

Well my Noble Butcher, being a blow in myself I can’t comment, mind if you read this first class Blog it would beg to differ. All I can say is your comments are medium rear to well-done. Wind SW Moderate and overcast with misty rain and heavier at times. Amount of rainfall for February, 292.4 mm. last year there was 77.7mm

02/03 Lough Currane was on the wild side this morning with a strong SW blowing down the lake, but this didn’t deter Angers from manipulating, so lets get down the action. First in the striking zone was Mr. Andrew Wishart of Co Down, who caught a fine 10 lbs Salmon on the fly, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com.

Now to the trolling department, Mr. Peter Keenan was in good form again with a 11 lbs Salmon caught on the troll while fishing with his gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. Back to the weather, wind in the morning as already stated, but come afternoon it slackened.

03/03 All quiet today after the weekends excitement. Wind NW fresh with reasonable cloud cover. So we will head out to the North Atlantic, Waterville saw big spring tide this morning so here are some pictures of the Wild Atlantic.

Big waves in Waterville

04/04 There were a few boats manipulating and all failed miserably in their duties in all departments. Wind NW light with reasonable cloud cover.

That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Salmon farm 'wipe-out' in Bantry Bay? The Southern Star

MINISTER Simon Coveney is being asked to give the figures of the escapees from the recent storm damage to a salmon farm in Bantry Bay. A written parliamentary question tabled by Clare Daly, TD, is due for reply later this week. According to the West Cork-based Friends of the Irish Environment, the farm has effectively been ‘wiped out’. In a statement released today, the group said that they ‘understand that there are only between 3,000 and 5,000 fish left at a site that held between 160,000 – 180,000 salmon.’…
