Last Few Places for the Saltwater Fly Fishing Primer as Spots are Snapped Up

The Saltwater Fly Fishing primer organised for 28th, 29th and 30th April at the Bella Vista Hotel in Cork is filling very fast and there are only a couple of places left. If you have been thinking about going you better make that call or send that email. It sounds like a great event and one not to be missed.

Jim Hendrick, Glenda Powell and Brian Healey have teamed up to provide three days of integrated and blended workshops that will compliment each other and provide you with a solid base of saltwater fly fishing knowledge and techniques for your 2014 season and beyond. Improve your fly casting, fly tying and fishing techniques and have a lot of fun too along the way!

Running over three days the primer is limited to nine places. The intention being that each person will experience two workshops in each of the disciplines over the three days, total six workshops! Because there’s such a lot going on timings are spaced nicely.

Fly casting techniques SH – delivered by Glenda – improving line speed, casting bigger flies, body positioning and much more.

Fly tying techniques – delivered by Brian – tying techniques for BTD’s, saltwater sea trout patterns, and material management.

Fly fishing – delivered by Jim – take your new improved casting and your own newly tied flies and go fishing on the wild coast with Jim

Jim is delighted that they will be based at one of the countries longest established and well known bass fishing centres – The Bella Vista at Cobh, in Co.Cork – Kevin has vast experience both of bass fishing and bass fishing anglers!

So if you have had a difficult forced ‘hibernation’ over the past ten weeks and are looking forward to season 2014 what better way to shake off the cobwebs in enthusiastic good company, good food, excellent accommodations and wild fishing on the Cork coast.

Cost for three days Saltwater Primer, (six workshops) two nights B+B, –€375.00 – evening meals at the Bella Vista or at local restaurants can be arranged and are a little extra.

If you would like more details or to reserve a place on this exciting three day opportunity then please don’t hesitate to call Jim at any time on 086 3444557

The Future of Coarse Angling is Very Bright as Young Anglers Steal the Show Today on Muckno

Young Stephen White, One to Watch for the Future .

An inter club coarse angling match was held today at Black and Yellow Islands on Lough Muckno. This fun match was organised by Les Harris of Lakeside Angling in Castleblayney and the local Castleblayney Coarse Angling Club, Carrickmacross Youth Angling Development and Coarse Angling Club and Drogheda Coarse Angling Club all took part, with between 25 and 30 anglers fishing.

For early March, you could not have asked for a better day. Yesterday, the waves battered these stretches with white horses rolling onto all of these swims all day. Today, temperatures were in and around 9 or 10 degrees and it was overcast with light winds and an occasional piece of hazy sunshine. A perfect fishing day.

The all in was called at 10am with the 4 hour match finishing up at 2pm. Some quality roach, hybrids and some nice bream were taken. All pegs produced fish and some great weights were taken by a number of the junior anglers. Young Stephen White from the Carrickmacross club had a great net of over 14lbs made up of bream and hybrids that were taken at distance on worm. Another youth angler Lee Harris of the Carrickmacross club also had a nice 10lb+ net of bream, hybrids and roach.

In the end honours were taken by the Carrickmacross club with some great weights of 14+lbs, 11+lbs and 10+lbs.  Most anglers managed between 5lbs and 7lbs with catches consisting mainly of roach. Best of the seniors was Martin Edwards also from the Carrickmacross club with over 11lbs. The fun and social side of the match was very evident, giving people a chance to get together for a bit of “craic” doing something they are all passionate about.

One thing however did stand out above all others and that was the quality of young anglers in all of the clubs that took part. It is safe to say that there is a bright future ahead of many of them, so the seniors better watch out. In particular the youth development programme being run by the Carrickmacross club seems to be paying off with two of the youths returning 2 of the top three weights in a thirty strong field which consisted of juniors and many well seasoned senior anglers as well.

A big well done to all of the youths on a great performance. The future of coarse angling is bright and angling was the real winner today. A big thanks to Les and his lads for all their efforts in organising this fun day.

Weed less soft plastics land the pike and breaks the Cabin Fever

Steven's fish

Cabin fever was beginning to set in for Rookie Bass Angler Steven Neely.  So he set off down the country a bit to Monaghan and reports:

Finally managed to get out for a few casts yesterday – it has been an age since I was able to get out and wet a line. As we drove further south the weather began to change and the rain set in. It wasn’t looking great when we crossed over into Co. Monaghan.

Despite the horrible weather we managed 3 fish in the first half an hour – not bad.  Sadly it all quietened down for the next few hours. We moved location to try another lake but nothing was moving.  Finally we got a break in the constant drizzle and rain as we moved back to the first spot.

The weather calmed and we nailed another three, well conditioned pike.  Weed less soft plastics seemed to be doing the trick, allowing us to fish tight up along the margins.

Hopefully we will start to see the weather picking up as Spring is on its way.

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore.  The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!
Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.
New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

A dream come true for David as he lands a Hooley salmon

David Jackson
David Jackson

Ian Powell  of Blackwater Lodge  reports;

David Jackson from Cork had one thing on his mind this year – to catch his first ever spring salmon. Conditions have been very tough with the high water, but he has already put in a lot of effort to try to realise his dream. Last Sunday he came close – landing a kelt.   On the 6th. March the dream came true……………………………………….. A very proud David returned to the Lodge in the early afternoon to weigh in his first ever springer. It tipped the scales at just over 7lb., & red marks around the tail revealed it had only just lost it’s sea-lice in spite of being caught at Ballyhooly – over 20 miles above the tidal limit (which is just below Lismore Bridge).
Fish are obviously well up the system as I also heard of an 11 pounder caught even further upriver at Killavullen 2 days ago as well.
Well done David – you thoroughly deserved it!

Good run of salmon through Melvin but no reports of any salmon caught

Lindsey Clarke reports  from LOUGH MELVIN –  Monday 24th February  to Sunday 2nd March 2014.

There were some better conditions at times on Melvin but some periods when the weather was unfavourable for angling. The lake remained very high over the week once again. It seems the Lough was quiet this week and I have yet to hear of any salmon being caught. There was a reasonable angling effort given the conditions and with the good run of salmon through the river I would have expected a few salmon to be caught on Melvin. That’s fishing!

Drowes fishing well with 10 salmon caught

Mark Kelly

Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 24th February  to Sunday 2nd March 2014.

The weather remained blustery once again for the greater part of the week and rainfall kept the river very high. The river did start to fall however and at present is reading 0.84m on the gauge. Despite the high water conditions, the river fished well and there were some 10 salmon caught. On Monday, Paul McCausland and Colin Gardiner both recorded a 7lb salmon apiece. Paul’s was caught on worm from the Mill Pool and Colin’s on a Rapala from the Sand Hole. On Wednesday, Gerry Fox registered an 8lb salmon caught from The Meadow on a Flying ‘C’ lure and John O’Connor accounted for a 7½lb salmon caught on from the Long Hole also on a Flying ‘C’ lure. On Thursday, John Todd caught an 11lb salmon from the Otter Hole on a Rapala and Julian Ciconte recorded a 9lb salmon caught from The Blackwater on a Flying ‘C’ lure. On Friday, Eddie Roulston registered an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from The Blackwater and Bill Likely landed a 6½lb fish caught on a Rapala from The High Bank. On Saturday, Mark Kelly recorded the first salmon of March when he caught a salmon of around 6lb on a spinner from the Eel Weir and Michael Szabat accounted for a 6½lb fish caught on a fly from Scot’s Corner.

The forecast is for drier and slightly colder weather and the Drowes should fall over the week giving better angling conditions and prospects look very good.

Irish Angling Update – 06/03/14

https://fishinginireland.info/salmon-reports/a-few-more-salmon-from-currane-at-the-weekend/
Spring tides add to the Atlantic swell at Waterville where some good salmon were caught at the weekend.

Spring weather has finally brought lovely conditions for anglers to go fishing in the past week and catches were much better. Water levels remain very high and there was some rain in the past week but there are better fishing conditions particularly on rivers.

The River Drowes continues to fish very consistently for salmon with an average of two salmon a day reported. Still in Donegal, Frankie Elliott landed   the first fish of the season on the River Finn, estimated at 12 lb. from the carry at Killygordon.  Down in Cork, water levels are decreasing on the Cork Blackwater and anglers expect good fishing soon and a few more salmon were reported from Lough Currane.  In the monthly report, two salmon were recorded on the Delphi Fishery in Co. Mayo.  High water levels are still hampering good fishing on the Bandon River in Co. Cork.  With the weather forecast very positive in the coming week, there should be an improvement for salmon anglers nationwide.

There was steady trout fishing reported at the Courtlough Fishery in North Co. Dublin.  Up in Donegal, there was some nice trout fishing reported from Lough Fern.  Angling guide, Eamonn Conway reports that trout fishing on the rivers in Co. Louth is very good with water levels dropping all the time.  80 rainbows were recorded on the opening day for the Anne Valley Angling Centre in Co. Waterford.  It is nice to report that a few 4 lb. trout were the highlight of the opening day on another anticipated season on Lough Sheelin.

A beautiful smile from Christina Barry
A beautiful smile from young angler Christina Barry who is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner

French anglers in Longford manage some good pike fishing despite weather and water levels while fishing with angling guide Kevin Lyons.  Angling guide Herman Mollenaar reported some big pike for clients on deep diving lures while fishing on Lough Derg. Caoimhghin Phelan caught some fine pike on Lough Derg also in the past week.  Ten year old Christina Barry landed a superb pike while fishing with her dad on the Royal Canal near Kilcock and wins our ‘Catch of the Week’.  Another young angler, Rosie O’Connor also caught a smaller pike and perch fishing on the same canal with her dad.

There was great bags of fish recorded at the Oakland competition last weekend near New Ross and 118 lb. of Carp took the honours for David Minogue.  Ireland’s Lakelands & Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championship was announced for September 2014.

At sea, reporter Rockhunter reported some bass and flounder fishing from the shore in the south east.  There are reports from Jim Hendrick, bass guide in Wexford on the coming season and there was competition news from Kilmore Quay on forthcoming events.  The second Leg of the Leinster Shore League Takes Place on Saturday 8th March at Kilmuckridge, Co. Wexford.

There are many news items in this week’s update and you can read them all on the website.  Propects look very good for all anglers as the good weather has been predicted for the whole of next week.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke

Pushing a contentious fish farming strategy – The Southern Star

ACCORDING to the great Millstreet poet, Francis Duggan, ‘Doctors differ and patients die, that’s a fact and facts don’t lie’ – which might be true in the case of the medical doctors who advise Dr Death, our Minister for Health, but not for Simon Coveney, our Minister for the Marine.

The latter has recourse to doctors of science and, with their help, he’s pushing a contentious strategy to convince the nation that BIM’s multi-million euro salmon farm for Galway Bay is the real deal.

Fishermen in West Cork don’t buy into his plan, nor does Inland Fisheries Ireland, which warns of the damage sea lice (a scourge associated with salmon farms) can do to wild fish, native habitats, freshwater quality and the €700m angling industry.<Inevitably, Coveney now finds himself entangled in a controversy that has drawn in the EU Environment Commission. It has opened an investigation into the Coveney / BIM project….
