Angler and bird vie, but climate rules, Mayo News

Opening day 2014. I went for my trout, alone. Other anglers had been there for hours, even since daybreak, sitting in the cold with wintery showers breaking the monotony of a mostly fishless day. I stopped at my favourite bay, only to find it occupied. One man had a trout, a long, eel-like fish with gaunt features and a blackish belly, scarcely thicker than the worm it had been caught on. There can be no advantage in killing such a poor specimen…

Drilling process 'puts fishing spots at risk', Irish Independent

POPULAR angling spots including the River Drowes, Lough Melvin and Lough Erne are threatened by plans to extract shale gas from beneath the surface using the controversial drilling process known as fracking, a protest has been told. A motorcade of more than 60 boats passed through Enniskillen in Fermanagh to highlight concerns about the impact that hydraulic fracturing would have on fish stocks…

Another Busy Season Ahead for Jim Hendrick as Days Fill Quickly

December bass on fly

Top bass and saltwater fishing guide Jim Hendrick has been in contact with us to let us know that he has just taken a look at his booking calendar and is very happy indeed at the booking levels for 2014.

Jim said that he had a ‘funny’ gap in September but this is due to be filled this evening with a new group of French clients.

Jim says that he has a few days left, not many mind, and whilst he is looking to guide differently along the coasts of Ireland this year, he is also eager to get some personal fishing in, the first for a long time. This is all part of a learning development process that takes time to understand and get a sense of I guess!

As Jim only has a few days left don’t delay and get in contact with Jim at www.jimhendrick.com       mobile: 086 3444557

Early Season Trouting in Irelands' North East With Eamonn Conway and Paul Moinester

Irelands North East is a Paradise for Wild Brown Trout River

Angling guide and APGAI Ire casting instructor Eamonn Conway reports that the rivers in the north-east we’re all running high on the opening weekend but fortunately they were running clear so the flies would be visable to the trout. Although the morning’s were cold and there was frost on the ground there were olives starting to hatch as the days got warmer. The hatch was small enough and the fishing was a bit slow but we managed to land enough trout to justify venturing out to the river in cold conditions over the opening weekend.
Nymphing techniques worked with good success for me and my fishing partner Paul Moinester from the USA.  Streamers worked to good effect in the deep pools, they were fished with heavy sink tips with short leaders. Streamers come in handy in high water and wet flies also worked with good effect and strangely so did a worm pattern Paul uses in the State’s. The fishing should pick up once the good weather continues and the water levels drop.
Eamonn Conway is one of the country’s top angling guides and a qualified APGAI Ireland Instructor. If you fancy a days guided fishing with Eamonn why not drop him an email at [email protected] or give him a call at 086 1242966   Additional information can be found on Eamonns’ website at www.tainflyfishing.com

A round-up from Delphi

David McEvoy reports from Delphi:

Last year I described February 2013 as “A Month of Two Halves”; this year there were no halves at all. “Wet, wet, wet” springs to mind as a way of describing the month. We now have had three incredibly wet months in a row, unprecedented I would say.

In December, January and February we have recorded 503.6mms (19.82”), 523.3mms (20.6”) and 497.7mms (19.59”) respectively. This is almost 50% of what we would record in a wet year.

Delphi - Delphi Fishery (2)Needless to say from an angling perspective there was plenty of water to put it mildly. The lowest the river got to in the month of February was 55. What this basically means is that fishing is extremely difficult as most of the time people had to fish with sinking lines and cooper tubes. Lower water, say 20 to 35 early in the year will slow fish down and therefore make them easier to target and catch. High water on the other hand allows them to run straight through unhindered.

We did however have a number of serious salmon anglers who fished hard, including a Bavarian party who partook in the blast and cast, Jack Browne, Hugh Brennan, the Sutherland party, Gerry Fitzpatrick and his crew, David Allcutt, Alan Molloy and David Dunne. They all tried hard but I’m afraid to no avail.

We did however manage to land two fish for the month. The first was taken by Westport angler David Duffy, who by his own admission would not be an expert river angler. He was however under the watchful eye of one of Delphi’s finest salmon anglers, Peter Joyce. David managed to hook and land a fine fish of 11lbs14ozs in the Meadow pool on a Willie Gunn. Needless to say David was delighted and all I can add is well done.

Our second fish for the month was taken off Finlough. It was a first ever salmon for 17 year old Colm O’Leary from Ballina, Co. Tipp. It weighed in at 9lbs11ozs and was taken on a Collie Dog. What made it all the more special was that all the family were in the boat. This will definitely be a fish that will be remembered by all concerned.

That brought total for the month to two which is the same as last year. It must be said that all who fished enjoyed themselves thoroughly as there is something special about salmon fishing early in the year.

It’s only today that the river is back down to 55 which bodes well for an experienced group of anglers, who have just arrived to fish for the next week, that is of course provided we don’t get another deluge of rain. Hopefully I will have great things to report in the next few days.

Bait preparation for the beginner

Ullcatch discusses bait collection for beginners.  From collecting peeler crabs right through to making up the bait. Some handy hints on what to do;

  • Remember while collecting your peeler crabs, please make sure you put rocks back in the position you found them, as this will help the conservation of our shoreline and any small creatures attached to them to survive.
  • Presentation of the peeler crab is as important as collecting and keeping them; they can be used as bait on their own or as a tip off with rag, lugworm and mackerel. Larger peeler crabs can be cut in half and used on smaller hooks.
  • Depending on what you’re fishing for, will determine how much crab you will use. For flounder, even schoolie bass or codling fishing the follow peeler presentation will be sufficient that you have your crab peeled you will need to cut in half.

Super fishing by a lovely young lass from Navan makes her our 'Catch of the Week' winner

A young lady from Navan impressed her Dad and all of us last weekend when she landed a fine pike from the Royal Canal.  10 year old Christina Barry was out fishing with Dad Chris in very stormy weather near Kilcock.  She hooked her cracking fish using a floatfished deadbait. Keen angler Christina has set herself a goal to catch every species of freshwater fish in Ireland in 2014.

Day time bass on a weather changed beach

Bass No. 2 weighing 3.25lbs

Peter Murphy aka Rockhunter examines the Cork beaches after the recent storms and notes the changes the weather has made on them.  On Saturday March 1st after digging a bunch of lug at low tide he heads to one of these beaches to try his luck.  He tells us “It was a far better session than I had dared hope for with 3 bass taken in daylight, 13 coalfish and a flounder. It was well worth taking the chance with a new mark in daylight.”

The following day Peter caught bass, 6 coalfish, a flounder and a five bearded rockling. Read about his weekend’s fishing on ‘Daytime bass – 1st & 2nd March
