7, 8 and 9 lb salmon caught trolling along Melvin but conditions harsh

Lindsey Clarke reports  from LOUGH MELVIN – Saturday 1st  to Sunday 9th February 2014.
Lough Melvin opened for salmon fishing on Saturday 1st February. It was a stormy day and a few hardy souls ventured out onto the lough. Two boats ventured out from the Rossinver Fishery with a few more boats fishing out of the Garrison Anglers jetty. Conditions were wintery but the wind, blowing from a southerly direction, was ok. However, around 2.00pm the wind shifted to the west and strengthened. This put paid to the fishing and the boats returned to shore. There were no salmon caught on the first day but Noel Johnston recorded a Ferox of some 5½lb which was released again (the trout season does not open until the 15th February on Lough Melvin). On the Sunday however, conditions were better and the first 2 salmon of the 2014 season were recorded. Kevin Gilmurray reported an 8lb salmon caught trolling along the Garrison Shore and John Flanagan accounted for a 9lb salmon caught trolling around Flanagan’s Bay. There was little to report over the week but on Sunday, Stephen Kennedy from Lisbellaw recorded a 7lb salmon caught trolling along the Garrison Shore and also caught and released 2 salmon kelts and 2 good trout, the best of which was around 4lb. Jason Martin also caught and released a 7lb trout.

Wet weather to continue as the Drowes remains high

Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 3rd  to Sunday 9th February 2014.

With the week remaining very wet, the river continued to run at very high levels with the gauge reading around 0.9 metres all week! A dry spell would be very desirable at this stage and make the river more accessible. There were a few rods fishing over the week. Gerry Fox recorded a 6lb salmon caught on a spinner from The Meadow on Friday. Unfortunately, the forecast is for the wet weather to continue and so the river will remain high this week again.

Ireland Goes Fishing For Anglers At Major French Show – Afloat .ie

Attending the Salon de la Pêche at Clermont-Ferrand in central France last weekend, Minister of State Fergus O’Dowd lent his support to Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), the Loughs Agency, Northern Ireland’s Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) and industry partners in promoting the island of Ireland an as an angling destination.

For the first time the three agencies came together under the ‘Angling in Ireland’ (or ‘Pêche en Irlande’) banner and hosted angling industry partners in a co-ordinated approach to attract greater numbers of French anglers to Ireland at the Clermont-Ferrand show – the largest angling show in France, attracting 30,000 visitors annually, and this year celebrating its 25th anniversary…

Severe weather puts a stop to salmon harvesting – Irish Independent

Irish Independent - Junior minister Brian Hayes

STORMS and jellyfish attacks have damaged Irish salmon farming, forcing a major producer to stop harvesting fish for over six weeks.

And farmers are also counting the cost of flooding, which has taken its toll on thousands of acres of land.

Marine Harvest, which is the biggest producer of Irish farmed salmon, reported exceptional fish mortality losses of €2.7m in Ireland during the final three months of 2013……

Belturbet pike for dedicated Dubs

Peter Freeman with 13lb pike

William Stafford and his friend Peter Freeman took advantage of a break in the stormy weather in January and headed to Belturbet where they caught and released a variety of fish – 20 to 30 roach which were feeding well plus a fine 13lb pike.  Peter caught the pike using a mackeral dead-bait on the River Erne. The two Dubs will certainly head back for more!

Restoring the banks, Irish Times

A scheme on the River Blackwater uses conservation and farming to improve habitats.

One of the great insights of ecology is that everything in an ecosystem is ultimately connected with everything else. A similar principle applies to human societies, succinctly expressed long ago in John Donne’s declaration that No man is an island. These ideas of interconnectivity, ecological and social, surfaced on a visit to IRD Duhallow, a remarkable community-based integrated rural development company that has operated in northwest Co Cork and in neighbouring parts of Co Kerry since 1989…

Specimen Fish Committee reports on the dreams of anglers, all looking for the Big One, Irish Times

THE recently published Irish Specimen Fish Committee report for 2013 shows more and more anglers target the bigger fish in the many categories and, of course, that elusive search for a new record. Up and running since 1955 this voluntary body has received over 25,000 claims since its inception and now boasts a database as being one of the longest running of its type in existence. No doubt, anglers both at home and abroad will be reading the report carefully to plan their angling trips in Ireland to catch the big fish during 2014…

The Lough Ree international Pike Festival from 9th to 11th April 2014

The Lough Ree international Pike Festival returns for its fifth year and will take place from the 9th – 11th of April this year. The competition has been sponsored by Failte Ireland for the last four years but as the term of their sponsorship has now come to an end this year’s first prize of €1000 will be sponsored by Athlone Town Council.Athlone Town Council logo

The pike festival is unique in that prizes are awarded based on the length of the pike rather than the weight and anglers are given a measuring board on which they must place their catch, photograph it, return the fish to the water as quickly as possible and hand in the photo at the end of the day for judging.

The entry fee for the competition is €110 per angler for three days of quality pike fishing and of that fee €100 goes into the prize fund while €10 goes to pay for administration and insurance and at the end of the competition any excess in the administration fund will be donated to the Lough Ree R.N.L.I. With the competition limited to 80 boats which is approximately 160 anglers this will give a total prize fund of approximately €17,000 to be won over the three days.

There will be thirteen cash prizes awarded at the end of each day and the angler who catches the single longest fish over the three days will win the €1000 which is sponsored by Athlone Town Council in addition to their daily prize. The daily prizes are based on entries and going on last year’s prizes the daily winner will take home €1000 and this means that the overall winner could walk away with €2000!!!

In a change to previous years the number of prizes that can be won on a daily basis will be restricted by the number of anglers in the boat. For example if there are two anglers in the boat then that boat may only win two prizes each day and similarly if there are three anglers in the boat then that boat may only win three prizes each day.

The very popular World Cup event also takes place and is awarded to the angler who catches the longest length of pike over the three days. This is worked out by adding together the longest fish caught each day in the boat to determine the overall length and the winner will receive the beautiful silver World Cup along with €1000 for their efforts.

Further details along with entry forms, rules and provisional prize list can be found on www.activeirishangling.com or on www.athlone.ie
