Downpours and deluges at Delphi but no salmon

The Rock Pool
The Rock Pool on the Delphi Fishery

David McEvoy reports that despite the beest efforts of some very brave anglers no salmon have been caught yet, but then the conditions are hardly encouraging…

12/02 Rainfall for December and January here at Delphi was 503.6mms (19.83 inches) and523.3mms (20.6 inches) respectively. Put into perspective this is the equivalent of 33% of a wet years rainfall in two months. For the first ten days in February we have had 168.1mms (6.62 inches).

To date salmo salar has alluded all those who have dared to venture forth on their first fishing expedition of the year. There is always a great sense of expectation when one gets the fly back in the water again, ever hopeful of that slow draw on the line and then!! We had a group of regular clients who enjoyed the Blast and Cast; the Blast being more successful than the Cast. There was however a fresh fish lost on opening day, which was indeed a great pity.

Since then we have had to make do with the two second thrill of the odd kelt on the line. It must be said that conditions have been extremely difficult with the lowest water levels so far being 55cms. As soon as the water comes into nice fishing order we normally get another belt of rain, which generally puts it up over 70 again. Today we have had snow and the water temperature this morning dropped to 4.2 degrees C, (not for the faint hearted).

Having said that credit must go to our two anglers who tried hard all last week and for those who have persevered so far this week. It’s at times like these that one really appreciates the beauty of the surroundings and a fish can be considered a bonus albeit a big one.

Hopefully within the next few days I’ll be able to report on the landing of our first fresh fish of the year. As one of our more experienced anglers says “You never know the minute”.

Monaghan venue produces pike and perch on soft plastics

After a quick photo to record the moment the perch was safely released.

Sławomir Stogowski was fishing with  friends last Sunday at a lake near Castleblaney. Pike were the quarry and the anglers, wrapped up against the weather,  were enjoying  some success.

Sławomir had caught a few pike on a twister lure, a 10cm soft plastic, and then suddenly the rod was kicking again, but not with a pike.  It was a good perch, which when landed measured 42cm and almost 2lb in weight. It comes as no surprise that the fish was taken just off the bottom of the lake.

After a quick photo to record the moment the perch was safely released.

Persistence and a break in the weather pay off for pike anglers in Longford with a super pike which wins our Catch of the Week

Kevin Lyons of Melview Lodge reports that a mix of dedication, commitment and even stubbornness can make the difference when the conditions are against you…

Sean English and Bill Murphy both from Dublin decided to have a few days Pike fishing in Longford, they stayed at Melview Lodge with guide and owner Kevin Lyons. Kevin said I had already advised them that due to extreme flooding things were going to be tough and that they may want to leave it until things improved, but they would not take no for an answer.

The first day they fished a Lake in the North Longford area and managed to hook up to a few Pike but did not manage to land any. On the second day they fished a Lake not far from the first which was in total flood, but they stuck it out and were rewarded with four well deserved Pike the biggest just few ounces under the 20lb mark using various dead baits.  This fine pike for Sean English wins our Catch of the Week.

Next week we report on regular visitors Jean-pierre from Belgium and Ben Habekotte who were here with Kevin for their winter Pike trip.

Super work by the Leinster Provincial Council of the IFSA at their Shore Angling Coaching Event

Leinster Provincial Council of the IFSA held a Shore Angling Coaching Event recently for budding Juniors, (12yrs to 16yrs). 20 junior anglers attended the event on South beach, Arklow aided by 10 anglers & coaches.

7 IFSA Leinster anglers and coaches helped out, while Des Frazier of Southside Angling assisted on the day with Des Chew and Chris Mc Gregor representing the DAI and youth worker Bernie Moloney representing Foróige.

Kit Dunne - Leinster Provincial Council - youth groupThe 20 youths were paired up with experienced sea anglers and coaches who took them through bait presentation, typical traces, casting and practical and safe angling.

Some of the young anglers had some experience and began catching right from the start, small whiting and Dabs were a welcome sight. The less experienced anglers got fist-hand tutoring from our experienced shore anglers. By the end of the session all anglers caught fish, Whiting, Dabs and Dogfish. The weather held off and it was a great day with everyone leaving with more knowledge, from a coaching point of view we learned a lot too.

It was a pleasure to see the first of our coaching sessions rolled, it was well due and will open the door for more shore and boat coaching in Leinster.

On behalf of the LPC I wish to thank everyone who helped to make the day a massive success.

At last a bit of fishing as Hamish battles the storm !

Hamish Currie skipper of Predator II reports:

With the winds not giving us a break up here in Red Bay I cancelled Saturday with s/e winds forecast force 5 but on Sunday with s/w winds

Forecast 5-6 then it wasn’t a problem back to the freezer and slid up the coast 7 miles to the same deep trough I have been working

Using the land for shelter but I’m afraid that the skate had moved on and strap congers was all that we caught but as the boys said “It was still great to get out all the same.”

Dreaming of fishing the Corrib…

Guide Jason O’Riordan of Game Fishing Ireland dreams of fishing on Lough Corrib and since the weather is so awful he has plenty of time to prepare.  He reports:

As a new trout season approaches it is time for me to prepare for an annual trip to Lough Corrib in late March.  All this stormy weather every weekend means there is little else to do but tie flies and dream of some proper wild lough trout fishing! Last season it was absolutely freezing for the time of year and no flies hatched.  Our most successful method was a team of wet flies fished on a fast intermediate line.

Jason O'Riordan - Corrib TroutWe also picked up a fish or two in sheltered bays on epoxy buzzers and shrimp patterns.  BUT this year, hopefully, things will be better.  Milder weather, a hatch of fly etc.  So I have already started tying up a few flies to try.  Some wets, dabblers and these small bumbles:

Jason O'Riordan - Small bumble fliesI wouldn’t be happy lake fishing without a selection of buzzers.  It is worth having some light ones to fish on the top dropper and heavier ones for the point:

Jason O'Riordan - Fly 1

Jason O'Riordan - Fly 2I may also need some emergers and dries if fish are moving at the surface.

Water, water everywhere and the fish are hard to get on the Blackwater

Ian Powell  of Blackwater Lodge  raises the question a lot of guides are asking at the moment….

Wondering why we haven’t caught our First Springer yet?
Well, it’s quite simple really! The river has been so high that no-one has gone out fishing yet.
It has been probably the wettest start to the year ever and the river has been out in the fields for almost the entire time since the season opened on February 1st.

Blackwater - This was the river below the Lodge today February 9th. at 11.00am.This was the river below the Lodge today February 9th. at 11.00am.
The Ballyduff gauge height was 3.33m. It is still rising slowly.

The exceptionally high water levels have also been accompanied by higher than normal water temperatures especially in January when it was around 8ºC – 46½ºF. For the first week or so of February this has dropped to around  7.4ºC – 45.3ºF.

All the right ingredients for a really good run of springers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now we just need the water levels to come down so that we can get out fishing. Realistically, the forecast seems to be for a conveyor belt of rain & storms being brought across the Atlantic by the Jet Stream so it could be weeks before levels get down to good fishing height. But Hey – they’ve got it wrong before.

Local Angling Club Seeks Members, North County Leader

Gormanston and District Anglers club, based in Balrothery are trying to promote membership in their club. After their recent AGM, it was decided by the members to drop the club “join in fee” for new senior members to make the club more attractive for anglers to join.
